Master and Commander delayed

Fox has announced that this title is offically delayed and say it's due to a problem that it has on a small number of blu-ray players. They are addressing the issue now and will announce a new release date shortly.

I think this disc had some BD-J content so thats probably the issue. You would think with 6 months since their last release they would have had time to get it right, Amityville Horror that was schduled for a week later is gone too.

Should still have a couple of good fox titles on october 2nd though.

Re: Master and Commander delayed

You wouldn't think it'll take them too long to get it sorted. At worst they would just have to release it without the BD-J content so hopefully still this year.

Doesn't bode so well for the 1.1 profile movies though.

And there was that thread about the possibility of 1.1 discs having trouble on 1.0 players.

Only kidding - I think they've done the right thing.

All new media is going to have hiccups, and they're better off delaying the odd title for a short while so they can get it straight.

The biggerst pain is that Fox have been delaying and delaying releases, and have been promted into this by the Paramount decision.

You'd have thought they'd have the masters ready to go, checked and re-checked. Not wait until it's time to get your arse in gear, then start authoring the discs.

It does. It's got one particularly nice feature where you can call a pop up map during the movie to see the ship's geographic position at any given time.

I have this on DVD, great film but it is one I'd definitely upgrade providing it gets good reviews for PQ (and sound in this case).

I'm getting a little miffed with this title being announced as a 'coming soon' only to be pulled again. I suppose we'll get another announcement for it at CES 08 now

This is the second time I've had a pre-order of this title cancelled on me

Re: Master and Commander delayed

M&M has far less BD-J than some other Fox releases so it's obviously not a major issue.

BD-J also has nothing to do with 1.1, from day one all Blu-ray players were BD-J compliant.

'You'd have thought they'd have the masters ready to go, checked and re-checked. Not wait until it's time to get your arse in gear, then start authoring the discs'

They've been working on discs for months, i.e. Fantastic Four 2, you will always get some problems that crop up, even if it's only on one player. Blu-ray has numerous players, not just Toshiba, we've seen the problems that cropped up when the 360 add-on was released.

Better to delay than release discs that need to be boiled or have sync problems. (Joke, no need for a format war thread!))

This is not quite correct - Profile 1.1 is a hardware specification that compatible gear must adhere to. However the features that '1.1 discs' will bring are implemented by ever increasing BD-J code. Saying that they are seperate is a little like saying cars and petrol are totally unconnected - one relies totally on the other to work.

It doesn't bode well they are having 'compatibility' problems now - but at least they are testing there discs which is something.

This is true.

PinP on BD works....erm, will work...well look, it's supposed to be going to work using Java.

The problem is, it's up to each Java programmer to work out how they want to do this in their own way.

You can't pretend that PinP has nothing to do with Java.

Re: Master and Commander delayed

We don't even know why the disc was delayed.

FOX BD+ and JAVA discs due earlier have not been pulled such as Day after Tommorow.

There have been umpteen HD-DVD's with sync issues, even not playing at all in numerous players, from Matrix, Heroes to combo's.

OH YES WE DO !

They are waiting until Master and Commander 2 is released in the Cinemas ... or Perhaps 2 & 3 ... there are LOTS of the novels to turn into films ... M & C ONE contained at least Three novels from the series as well as various historical inaccuracies that might have been, er, politically expedient at the time .. its just a question of getting all of the actors together, and .... er, well, its Easy really !

Why are we waiting?

No your right - we don't know for sure - but it is extremely annoying nevertheless.

Does The Day After Tomorrow use BD+? Interesting...

Have there? Never come across any of that personally - what HD DVD player are you using?

It was confirmed to be the first BD+ disc on another forum and has some BD-J game like M&M.

Why bring HD DVD into this? You are SUCH a fan boy
If people are going to speculate about problems with M&M and draw wide ranging conclusions it's only fair to point out the few facts we do know.

There have been many issue's with certain HD-DVD discs tripping up players, far more than with Blu-ray, yet the perception is it's Blu-ray that's glitchy and buggy, with any such issues jumped on.

From HDD:-

Let's not kid ourselves that this is an isolated defective disc or a one-time anomaly. Complaints about playback problems on '300' are widespread, and similar compatibility issues have plagued earlier Combo releases such as 'Children of Men', 'The Good Shepherd', 'Happy Feet', 'Superman Returns', and 'The Matrix Reloaded' (copies from the expensive 'Ultimate Matrix Collection' box set which has the bonus features in DVD format on the flip-side of the disc).

The point however is that no one here had mentioned HD DVD or compared one format to another.

So why bring it in, risk turning this into a format war and getting the thread locked?

I could have ignored the comments and everyone would have gone away thinking there are major issues with BD+, BD-J, Fox, when there isn't.

If Blu-ray is judged so harshly it's only fair to point out similar 'issues' on the red side.

Alternatively the opening posters could have stated Master and Commander was delayed with a new date soon and left the speculation to one side.

I think we've all been fairly friendly, they're only movies afterall.

Re: Master and Commander delayed

Not that combos are relavant to why M&C has been delayed, but as far as I can tell it's a production issue with the discs, more like BD50 margins rather than a software issue. Toshiba have tweaked the drive firmware, most likely in the error correction side of things which means that discs that didn't use to play correctly on players now do. So yes there was a problem, but not anymore. BD Java issues are another thing entirely, yes you can tweak firmware but unlike the combo issue where a firmware update fixed problems moving forward, BD Java issues will keep coming back.

As a first hand user I don't need to rely on reports on how discs play All I can say is with the discs I own, whatever problems existed with the discs were resolved before I played them

Re: Master and Commander delayed

I had a small problem with 'Matrix 1'. It froze, but when I pressed 'previous' to the start of the chapter, it played through fine.

The funny thing is, exactly the same thing happened on 'Children of Men'.

Only it was a UK copy of 'CoM' which isn't a combo.

Both freezes happened around two-thirds of the way through the film, which makes me suspect a layer change issue.

Just a guess.

BTW, after the 'previous' fix, if I put either disc in the player again, it plays fine.

New date Feb 5th.

No new date for Amityville Horror yet, but that has been delayed for marketing reasons and not technical ones aparantly.

HiHD has revealed that two Fox titles recently delayed have been rescheduled for 2008. 'Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World', which was delayed because of compatibility issues, is now scheduled for February 5th. 'Amityville Horror' was delayed for marketing purposes will see release sometime in 2008

Oh thats really frustrating, am very much looking forward to this in HighDef, after it received some poor reviews I wasn't that interested but I ended up getting it in a sale and really enjoyed the film.

Hope they don't delay Day After Tomorrow now.

If they were going to delay that I'm sure we'd have heard by now, so I'm sure it will be released on time. It was a couple of weeks ago we started to hear rumblings about master and commander being delayed.

Re: Master and Commander delayed

Apparantly (from biased bill) the delay is indeed due to a compatability fault. The problem is that once fixed, they can't get any discs replicated before xmas, as the production lines are already booked to capacity.

Seems like replication capacity is still an issue.
