Question Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

Hi,

I've got a PS3 at the moment but aside from the free Casino Royale and buying Hellboy as it was cheap I'm not really seeing the kind of BIG releases to make me buy Blu-Ray over a dvd and upscale.

However when I went on Play.com I saw that their Top Sellers list and the coming soon list had loads of great films for the HD-DVD format.

How come Blu-Ray doesn't seem to have anything good coming out and would it be worth getting a HD-DVD player as well?

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

What is 'good' and what is not is a matter of taste.

But HD DVD players are comparatively cheap, and there are certainly plenty of HD DVD exclusives.

Hi

Well this thread will turn into a can of worms I am sure.

I would say if you have a spare £170ish then yes buy a HD DVD player.

Both formats have some great films already out and some great releases comming up in the next few months!

I am in the same boat, i too have a PS3. It does depend on what movies you like, i am awaiting the release of the new Toshiba HD-DVD players and if the 5 movie deal is on then i will probably buy one. I was going to get the E1 at £170 but thought i would wait until Autumn/Winter which is when my HC gets far more use.

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

i have both formats and generally buy about 6 hd-dvd's for each blu-ray. all hd-dvd's are region free so it opens up a lot more options than being stuck with region b blu-ray.

No big releases? Some pretty impressive ones in the upcoming months. Die Hards, Pirates, Spidermans etc.

However in answer to your question I definitely think it's worth getting HD DVD as well. I already had a 360, so it was pretty cheap for me just to get the HD DVD add on. I am however no eyeing up a 3rd gen Tosh deck, as if I get a new amp, I'd want to take advantage of the new audio codecs which can't be done with the 360 add on. In the last few weeks I have watched Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, The Thing, Matrix Trilogy and Hot Fuzz, all currently only available on HD DVD. With Transformers next month along with some other great titles coming soon, I think it would be well worthwhile getting a HD DVD player too if you can afford it.

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

Movies are very personal, but if you can't find anything here.........

Plus plenty of Warner releases still to come.

These are US releases but past experience shows 70% or so will be region free.

Movietyme have a listing of US titles that work on a UK PS3.

The one's in GREEN have me sold.

Seriously, if you can afford it, go dual.

At the very, very least you'll get 18 months of Universal, Paramount & Dreamworks exclusives.

But I agree, there are lots of good BDs for you to buy for your PS3, too.

BTW, have you seen 'Identitry' yet? Well worth a look.

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

When High School Musical 2 was announced I shrugged my shoulders, big deal, but the more I hear this is a VERY big release, it goes under the rader for most on this site but it could be a big hit up their with titles like the Pixar movies.

Not that I'll buy it, lol

I must admit, it may be a bit of a luxury, but I like being able to buy both formats

Anyway, you need an HD DVD player, otherwise you can't watch Transformers in HD!!!

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

definatly worth getting both formats i've got a 360 HD-DVD drive and a Pioneer Blu ray drive in my PC (both drives will set you back £240-50 total)

this way i get the pick of all the films on HD and also get to pick the cheaper or better quality format

you won't even need a powerful PC anymore as 2000/8000 series cards have on board decoders that make playing HD a breeze

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

I think at the end of the day if your a movie lover then dual format is the only way,i cant understand why some people will only support 1 format

There is plenty of great films already on both with a load more to come.I think both formats have plenty going or them, and will be around for a while yet
so stop denying yourself HD heaven and get a HD-DVD soon

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

The HD players seem cheap by comparison to the Blu Ray and I like the sound of the Toshiba one with the potential 5 disc promo but I bet we don't get it. Its a shame the studios are releasing only on one format or the other but if no one "wins" the format war and both end up staying you can bet they'll all release on the other. The only exception would be Sony with them not wanting to back the enemy

I think its a safe bet from what you've posted that getting a HD players a good thing, after all I've only got Blu Ray because I wanted a PS3.

Thanks for convincing me

Yeah I'd be very tempted to see what it is like. I've heard picture and sound are right up there with the others, and disc compatibility at a glance was good. I'll be interested to see if ALL discs play, or whether there will be problems with discs that have advance features. Be great if Samsung did a promo. 2 free HD DVDs, 2 free Blu-Rays, just to keep things fair

Always a bit dubious of dual format machines. I always feel like they're doing both things okay instead of one of them really well. Could always ditch the DVD player in favour of a HD one to save space, thankfully the media unit I've got isn't tight on space

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

worth thinking about the money though.

I'm constantly itching about getting a HDDVD player again. But when I look at the bluray release schedule, I'll be spending so much money this winter anyway, I'm not sure I could afford to also buy the HDDVD releases. So in a twisted way its good for some titles to be HDDVD exclusive. It'll slow my buying down a little, and I am guilty of blind buying too many things too quickly, then not watching them for ages.

When I sold off most of my SDDVDs there were still several I hadn't watched.

Re: Is it worth getting HD-DVD as well?

It all depends what you want. If you want to see all the movies in HD then you will have to go dual format. Either that or stick it out when there is a winner.

You could just buy the films you want on Blu-Ray and get the DVD's of the others which aren't available for Blu-Ray, then your PS3 will up scale them pretty well on a HDTV. Its certainly the cheaper option, and I think saving money is always good!

That's probably the most sensible option in the end, that is until you see Transformers running 1080 in a store and think "I must have that!"

The cheapest option is to stay DVD for everything...most movies can be purchased on that format for £5 a few months after launch. But it's not the best option

No, the cheapest option is to download them.

I am also guilty of buying lots of stuff. Have a mass back catalogue of shows and films to catch up on. Think I'll call in sick for a few days with umm ... a headache.
