Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I'm still SD only, even though I'm planning to go HD pretty soon. One of the reasons I haven't been in a rush to switch to HD is that I already own quite a lot of the films I consider worth having on DVD. While HD is certainly better and many DVD releases are far from perfect, there are actually quite few DVDs that I'd feel the need to upgrade in the near future.

- Blade Runner (definitely)
- LOTR (maybe)
- Ghost in the Shell (probably, especially considering the audio delay on my original DVD)

Can't really mention any other ATM. What's your upgrade policy?

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I got the HDDVD add on for the 360 and to be honest it has been a brilliant buy for the price.
I have double dipped alot recently and there is a huge difference depending on the film.
Its really only once you look back on the sd dvd that the difference is really apparent.
Films like the Rambo trilogy for instance. When you start watching them on HD you obviously get used to the quality and think 'thats not bad', but when you look at the old dvd's the difference is staggering.
Basically if I like the film and convince myself I will watch it (and can afford it) I will double dip. However, reading reviews such as AVreviews, and the users on here help make up my mind also, as there are a few poor transfers out there. Only quality gets ordered.
The titles you mention are a wee bit away in terms of release dates though.

Yes, I guess that's the case for the two last ones.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I totally agree with featherhall. When you buy the discs from places such as DVD Pacific they can cost as little as £12. So if you flog your old DVD on ebay or here, the price of the upgrade can be fairly negligable.

I really try not to and only do it when I can get a bargain priced Blu-Ray that has been hailed by reviewers as having excellent picture quality.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

My buying haboits have changed.

When a new film arrives, I'll buy it on high def if it's available on high def.

If it's a re-release I'll only double-dip if (A) it's a spectacular looking film, and (B) I'll definitely watch it again on my projector system.

The only exception is if it's one of my absolute favourites, which I simply must have. In that case I'll get it in high def anyway, even if it's not a 'spectacular'.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I recently sold off almost all my DVDs but am really trying to limit my HD buys to titles where being HD is a significant advantage/improvement but also some titles I never owned on DVD who's HD quality is significant to justify the extra expense. I have Man on Fire and will buy that on HD as, visually/aurally, I think it will be worth it even though I own the 2 disc special edition. I'm less sold on buying "classic" movies on HD though will obviously buy Star Wars Ep 4-6 if/when they're released.

Same here. I went on a dumbass spending frenzy when i first picked up my PS3, but now i'll just buy my all-time favourites or any new releases. Otherwise i'll be the brokest man in existance.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I would suggest spending a little extra on a hd player that does a better job upscaling . I got the hdxe1 as it has the Reon HQ upscaling chip and makes sdvd look almost HDDVD. You will be amazed at what a difference a decent upscaling will make to all your old movies.
Secondly I would recommend NOT buying HD movies but simply rent them from LOVE FILM.com for next to nothing and only buy movies that you are sure you will watch again and again, and then only buying them from the HD for sale forums on on this site.

I am buying all new films on high def. As for catalogue releases I accept that most movies will need to be re-brought at some stage: how quickly this occurs depends upon the picture and audio quality - if a titles has lossless audio this goes a long way to persuading me.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I rarely buy new ones on SD any more, just foreign (mainly asian) language that you cant get on HD. The ones I have upgraded are:

fifth element (remastered)
crank
black hawk down
matrix (ultimate)
warriors
the thing
hot fuzz
shaun of the dead

upgrading the rest of my favorites when I can afford to (pre-ordered all kubric's, blade runner, crow).

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I don't have HD atm but I will not be replacing 99% of my collection. There are a number of reasons -

Stopped counting at 1500 discs.

I have a lot of TV and DVD is perfectly good enough especially when I watch them on a 32" TV (films are watched on a projector).

I have seen some films so many times that HD won't make much a difference. Star Wars ANH is first place at over 100 times. T2 is second at about 50 times.

Some DVD's look amazing even at SD (Casino Royale, King Kong)

I will be mainly buying new films that make use of the HD quality. I don't see the point in buying a simple comedy film on HD (not like I watch many anyway).

The only ones I may replace are -

Star Wars Trilogies (if it comes out)
LOTR Extended Editions
Pirates of the Carribbean Trilogy
Serenity

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I have around 90 films on HD/DVd/BR currently and it really depends on the film (and also reviews of the HD version)

For example for movies I have really enjoyed I have bought the HD version after the sd (like SeaBiscuit, MI trilogy, POTC) however for much newer films I am going to try and avoid SD and just go for HD (unless the HD version isnt going to be released for a long time)

Cool Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

Like the other NWGarrett I don’t have HD but I’m only getting the real cheap price DVD's and at that I passed of some cheap Star Wars trilogy, LOTR etc and waiting for one format to win out or something to be settled.

Nice storage rack. I have had to make room in my built in wardrobe and made shelves. I also had to sling out a load of clothes to make room. It was worth it.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I sold all of my SD DVD collection other than TV and Sport/Motorsport DVD's.

I don't rent and make a lot of impulsive, blind buys. That being the case I will not be replacing many of my SD DVD collection, but have found myself buying HD spectaculars on Blu-ray, like POTC, that I didn't buy on DVD.

Action films are much more appealing in HD.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

The ease of shifting DVDs and the low price of HD software has resulted in me catching upgrade fever. And I like a lot of movies so I've upgraded quite a few!

Not all have been successful (Superman The Movie and The Usual Suspects were particularly disappointing) but for the most part the HD upgrades have been worth it either through a significant increase in A/V quality, better extra features, or a combination of both.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

Some of the HD DVD and BRD titles I'm buying are films I have on laserdisc that I haven't got round to buying the DVD of yet :o

I did have a firesale of quite a few DVDs I intended on replacing before the Hi Def releases ramped up tho. Gonna have another one soon now that the announcements are coming in thick and fast.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I was going to say 'are you mad' but then i realised that i have already replaced my matrix dvd's with the hddvd version.

I guess it will therefore depend on the film.

For most of my films, the picture/sound transfer doesn't really add much, so i won't be bothering.

The only ones I would replace if I already had them would be films I really liked and enjoyed. Also any action movies too as I think they appear to highlight the HD capabilities best.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I guess that LOTR would be something I'd buy again if it comes out in Blu-Ray - but not primarily because of the PQ but rather because I want to have those SEEs on ONE disc each. Swapping the disc in the middle of the movie sucks overweight hamsters through tight garden hoses.

Shortly after I got my PS3 and watched my first HD titles on it I would have been more eager to replace some of my ~950 DVDs with Blu-Ray, but after buying a decent upscaling DVD player 2 months ago (Denon 1930) I don't find that so important anymore. Sure, HD is still better than upscaled SD - but the difference in PQ doesn't warrant the cost of the HD media in most cases.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

I don't see why LOTR would be on one disc. The disc will still have all the different audio options and higher HD bitrates. If it is on one disc, the quality won't be much better than SD.

Re: Do you upgrade films from DVD to HD?

And don't forget the need to pee during a 4 hour movie that the disc change over allows for.

With almost 3,500 DVDs on my shelves I won't be exactly rushing to upgrade my entire collection. I had a bit of "upgradeitis" when I first got my HD player and bought about a dozen or so titles I already had on SD, and while the difference was noticeable it wasn't that big a leap, so the novelty soon waned. I'm playing standard DVDs on an £800 DVD player and the A/V quality is still pretty tasty.

I buy new releases that I want on HD as they appear and will dip again on the odd title like the upcoming Blade Runner and 2001 releases (which if there weren't HD versions I'd still upgrade to even on SD for the new material) , but overall I won't be double dipping. The quality of SD is good enough and I'd sooner spend the money on new HD discs or new equipment.

To be frank if HD didn't take off I wouldn't lose any sleep. I still see standard DVDs where the A/V quality makes me go "Wow!"

3500 DVD's

I don't know how many I have but I count a boxset by the number of discs inside (they are individual discs to watch) and have I over 1500.

I made sure I had a pee before starting a LOTR EE marathon. I only got up to change from disc 1 to disc 2 for each film. That was 11 hours of fun. At no time watching it at the time on a projector, I thought I have to watch this in HD. However, if I did double dip, this would the film/s to do it as one of my favourites.
