Thumbs down Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

On August 28th, Paramount will ship its first high definition title to include a lossless or uncompressed soundtrack - 'Blades of Glory'. This title will feature a PCM 5.1 soundtrack for the Blu-ray release, but will feature no equivalent on the HD DVD, presumably because of the smaller disc capacity.

Two weeks later, Paramount will ship 'Face/Off' with extras features available in high definition, but only on the Blu-ray version, again due to space constraints.

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=360

Shocking! Space constraints??
This is real unacceptable from Paramount and extremely disappointing for the loyal HD-DVD crowd. Most of which were early adopters.

I feel real sorry for them. But with Space constraints the reasons given on HD-DVD, I am afraid there's probably more of this to come!

Are you employed by the BDA?

Where do you find the time to post this stuff?

We are all HD brothers here!
Honestly, I post something about BD I get flamed, I post something about HD-DVD I get flamed! It's not as if I am making all this up!

Anyway, the point I am trying to make here is that the space contraint issue is valid according to a studio that is supporting both formats. Really dissapointing! What the hell are Paramount doing??

The HD DVD includes a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround track according to HighDefDigest.

Personally I don't mind PCM or TrueHD (and I'll even take DTS-HD MA for long term benefit) but it's the compressed lossless audio that will be the better option long term if things start going down the 'transport' route as Denon have announced - read Nick's comments on the High Def forum

Well, let's hope so. Hi Def Digest have been wrong before.

Any news of why extras are missing from Face-off??

Why are 100% of your posts about Sony products and in favour of Sony products, or about competitor products with a negative spin?

Re: Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

Well according to DVD Times ( who are always spot on in press releases)
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=64972
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD release of Blades of Glory on 28th August 2007. In this comedy, bitter figure skating rivals Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) brawl after tying for the gold medal at the world championships. Banned for life from men’s competition, these archrivals beat the system thanks to a loophole that allows them skate again – in pars; competition! The film also stars Crag T. Nelson, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler and Jenna Fischer.

Arriving day-and-date with the DVD release, extras match the DVD release and include:
Return to Glory: The Making of "Blades" (HD)
Celebrities On Thin Ice (HD)
Cooler Than Ice: The Super-Sexy Costumes of Skating (HD)
Arnett and Poehler - A Family Affair (HD)
20 Questions with Scott Hamilton (HD)
Hector: Portrait of a Psychofan (HD)
Moviephone unscripted with Will Ferrell, Jon Heder and Will Arnett
Deleted Scenes (HD)
Alternate Takes (HD)
Gag Reel (HD)
Photo Gallery
Music Video "Blades of Glory" by Bo Bice
MTV Interstitials

The main feature will be presented in 1080P Widescreen with English, French and Spanish 5.1 audio (Dolby Digital on Blu-ray Disc, Dolby Digital Plus on HD DVD)

and English, English SDH, French, Portuguese and Spanish subtitles.

An English 5.1 Uncompressed PCM track will also be featured on the Blu-ray Disc release.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So we have to wait and see.

And if you search for Face Off HD news in the same site, you will find that extras have been left out of the HD-DVD version!

Spin is something which is NOT fact or facts been twisted. I just simply point out offical info and want to debate it.

Re: Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

Why are you so one sided?

So far nearly EVERY Paramount elease has had a inferior sound mix on BD, they have all had DD at 640k, the HD DVD version has had DD Plus at 1.5M

All your fan boy mates have complained about it!.

Now you finally get PCM and you try to steer down HD DVD, which is still getting a True HD mix!

Stop spreading misinformation!

Well it's true Paramount were short changing BD releases before, however it was never because of space-constraints. Which to me is an a poor reason.

The TrueHD sound might be true. Although I can't find a press release confirming this. And extras are missing from Face-off. Paramount are citing space constraints for this reason!

And your official info (with pre-added spin) comes from Blu-ray.com

Do you not see a problem with that?

From DVDtimes.co.uk

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=64762

And features which appear to be exclusive to Blu-ray Disc (they are not listed for the HD DVD release, presumably due to the reduced storage capacity) include:
The Light and the Dark: Making Face/Off (HD)
John Woo: A Life in Pictures (HD)
Original Theatrical Trailer (HD)

Now tell me if this is true or not!!

Re: Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

Assuming DVDtimes have there facts right. And as there release date section is crap and wrong most the time I doubt it.

Also, these are harly a big deal- do they make up for all those DD audio tracks?

I would be happy with the film and a PCM/ True HD sound track!

I guess we'll find out - but I suppose Paramount's HD DVD team might have been quite busy with all the extras for Star Trek HD DVD release - the BluRay team haven't been so occupied (by all accounts anyway).

Well, personally I don't care about DD 1.5 or DD 640k.

Now of course a lossless soundtrack on one version and not the other is a big deal. And I am still having trouble finding a press release confirming this (DD THD) on Blades of Glory. Although I must admit both DD and a DD+ soundtrack on HD-DVD does not sound right.

Anyway, I disagree Face-off missing extras is unacceptable, up until now Paramount were not doing this.

Re: Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

Paramount seem a really lazy studio when it comes to HD, it really wouldn't surprise me if this was true. So far, HD DVD seemed to have been their "base console" so to speak, releasing two disc sets with identical extras despite the added storage space on Blu-ray. So it wouldn't surprise me if the roles had reversed, especially with where the market is going.

Which is really bad.
I just can't believe that space would be an issue with HD-DVD. What with VC-1 and Dolby TrueHD being so great and all.

I was always led to believe that 30GB was enough, and now Face-off MAY be missing extras on what may be a one or two disc set??

Re: Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

if you imagine the result of King Kong on a 30gb disc which was superb, then face off which is a movie with a shorter running time should have no problems at all, even with extras. Maybe toshiba should start running out those 51gb discs after all..

Yeah, although the disc price is likely to rise in triple layer and almost certainly we will need new players. (which I don't think will be less expensive to manufactuer then current models)

Foxclose - your posts are coming across as borderline trolling.

100% of your posts are:
pro Blu-ray
pro PS3 or
anti HD DVD

It doesn't look like you've made any contribution to the forums outside of format war threads, so it's now wonder people will question your motives.

Parmamount have been short changing Blu-ray on picture and sound quality for months, but you didn't post about this. You should be happy that your format is finally being treated equally by a studio, rather than being happy that other movie fans (of a different format) may be short changed.

I'm sure the mods have better things to do around here than read through all the posts you start about every tiny little pro Blu-ray/anti HD DVD event.

I hope things are changing but an awful lot of BD releases so far have been single layered so will be 25gb but most HD DVDs have been dual layered so they will be 30gb. Also many BDs have used MPEG2.

Cheers

Re: Substandard HD-DVD releases from Paramount!!

Paramount go either way:

Comparing the audio package on this Blu-ray release to its HD DVD counterpart, unfortuntely Paramount once again continues its trend of inequity. While this Blu-ray gets a 640 kbps Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix, the HD DVD gets a healthier 1.5mbps Dolby Digital-Plus track, and in a direct compare the Blu-ray is audibly thinner -- particuarly during scenes where Lazarus plays his guitar and moments with the aforementioned sound of the dragging chain. On its own merits though, this Blu-ray track is quite good and should easily please fans of the film.

So, re "FACE OFF"...

The HD-DVD has the superior sound format in Dolby Digital Plus (as opposed to the Blu-Ray version that has ol' vanilla Dolby Digital), BUT the Blu-ray has more extras ? Am I reading that right ?

Thanks!

The info on DVDtimes suggests that, but as Rasczak says, High Def Digest has info that suggests they will have PCM on Blu-ray and TrueHD on HD DVD.
There are three extra not listed on the HD DVD so far, this off course doesnt mean they wont be there.

With regards to FOXCLOSE posts, even the title of this tread is misleadeaing! He refers to Substandard releases from Paramount, yet only mentions one title and it is hardly Sub-Standard . And as previouly mentioned was not quick to start a "Substandard Blu-ray releases from Paramount!!" thread on the past, which as such a fan of movies on a format must have concerned him.
