Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

This is going to be one of the high def highlights of this year IMHO. It's good to see some High Def TV appearing on the format as well.

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

I'm just going to keep repeating to myself "you will not buy ST TOS again!!!!!"

Already spent a fortune on the two eps at a time release, only to replace those with the season box sets, which look bloody good anyway.

We already know it is going to be HD DVD/DVD combi release - Paramount have already alluded to that. Darn good thing I say - I will want to watch a few of the episodes on my laptop which certainly isn't HD DVD enabled (not yet anyway)

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

The excitement builds - this article over at HighDefDigest has a few more details about the upcoming Star Trek HD DVDs. The release will feature a host of new GGI enhancements, among them redone spaceship exteriors and a rejiggered opening including a remastered version of William Shatner's classic "Space, the final frontier..." monologue. In addition it will feature never-before-seen behind-the-scenes 8mm footage taken during the original production.

As stated above more details should be forthcoming on July 26!

I know what has been reported but that doesn't mean it's set in stone after all I just bought Army of Darkness on HD DVD which has been re-released without the DVD side

If it's a combo then I won't be buying for reasons I've mentioned in other posts but as always not going to criticise anyone else for supporting a format I believe does more damage to the market that is already playing second fiddle to Blu-ray.

Have downloaded afew HD episodes from XBox Marketplace and the re-done effects are very good, they match the original shots very well.

I wonder if they will release them on HD-DVD as they were on Marketplace though, with the live action footage in 4:3 but the re-done effects in 16:9

As I understand it that is the plan Personally I thought it might be a little distracting switching from 16:9 to 4:3 but opinions seem quite favourable.

Perhaps features which HD DVD supports are not going to be platform wide on Blu-ray until the BDJ spec is standardised later in the year and the HD release has been planned well in advance?

Given the support of both formats by CBS/Paramount I expect Blu-ray will be along sooner or later and probably cheaper than combo HD DVD.

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

Soft focus lenses were used in a lot in the filming of the Star Trek series's and I cannot see them being improved much in HD over the dvd versions, but if there is a noticible improvement then I will get them in HD.

Oh there is a difference, not only the extra detail but the colours are much better plus all scratches/marks have been removed, it almost looks like a new show

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

I've never bought TOS on home video, as it's always been so darn expensive. But these'll be worth shelling out for. Personally I hope they are combos, so that the original versions of the episodes can be on the DVD side and the HD version can be on the other. That'll hack off all those who bought the previous DVDs and want the HD versions too, but I don't give a crap. Me wantee!!!

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

Press Release:

Quote:
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment invite you to experience STAR TREK: The Original Series as never before when the legendary first season arrives for the first time ever in a 10-disc HD DVD/DVD combo disc set on November 20, 2007. Meticulously remastered from the original camera negative specifically for this high-definition release, each classic episode is presented in pristine condition with state-of-the-art digital visual effects. 1960s special effects have been replaced with 21st century computer-generated imagery to give new depth and atmosphere to various elements including the main title sequence, the galaxy shots frequently seen from the Enterprise's bridge, the battle scenes, planets and alien ships, some of the matte paintings used as backdrops for new worlds, as well as the Enterprise and other Starships, which have been replaced with state-of-the-art CGI-created ships. The new computer-generated Enterprise is based on the exact measurements of the original model, which now rests in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The refurbished episodes also feature higher quality sound for the famous opening theme. The original score by Emmy® Award-winning composer Alexander Courage has been re-recorded in state-of-the-art digital stereo audio with an orchestra and a female singer belting out the famous vocals. A digitally remastered version of William Shatner's classic original recording of the 38-word "Space, the final frontier…” monologue continues to open each episode.

In addition, the extraordinary set features true HD audio and exclusive HD DVD interactive features produced by New Wave Entertainment. Interactive menus and a "Starfleet Access” interface will allow viewers to activate icons which provide such features as Picture in Picture video commentaries and an interactive tour of the starship Enterprise. Both the standard definition and high definition presentations also include rare on-set home movie footage, an inside perspective on what it took to transport Trek into the 21st century and much more. Housed in a futuristic clear case, the STAR TREK: The Original Series HD DVD/DVD set will be available for the suggested retail price of $217.99.

STAR TREK: The Original Series is a 10-disc collection presented in the original aspect ratio (1.33:1) screen. The standard definition presentation includes Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, LAS Mono and French Mono as well as English, LAS and French subtitles. The HD DVD presentation features English Dolby True HD and LAS Mono with English and LAS subtitles. The DVD is not rated in the U.S. and rated G in Canada.

Bonus features on the HD DVD side are as follows:

* Starfleet Access – On-screen graphical interface allows viewers to access Picture in Picture video commentaries, comparisons of re-mastered vs. original effects, encyclopedic information (science, life forms, technology), episode trivia and more on the following episodes:
o Where No Man Has Gone Before
o The Menagerie, Part 1
o The Menagerie, Part 2
o Balance of Terror
o The Galileo Seven
o Space Seed
o Errand of Mercy
* Spacelift: Transporting Trek into the 21st Century
o From new visual effects to sound, this documentary provides an in-depth exploration of the remastering of classic Star Trek episodes.
* Billy Blackburn's Treasure Chest: Rare Home Movies and Special Memories
o Join crew member and "extra-extraordinaire” Billy Blackburn as he shares his own behind-the-scenes home movie footage of life on the set of Star Trek.
* Interactive Enterprise Tour
o Viewers will explore the Enterprise interior and exterior in detail as they pilot their own shuttlecraft in this spectacular 3D simulated feature.
* Perpetual Entertainment's "Star Trek Online” MMO Game Preview

Bonus features on the standard DVD side are as follows:

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

Looks good, although does 10-combo discs seem a liitle excessive?

Nice to see they have included TrueHD audio

Hoping there will be some deals on that $218 SSRP, but will end up with the set anyway.

10 discs sounds quite low infact for all 3 seasons or is this just the first season?

I thought it must be all three seasons at first but the release says "the legendary first season"

EDIT: 29 epsides in the first season means 3 per disc (about 2 hours) + the extras and the True HD which I suppose is about right then?

$218 sounds an awful lot for just one season. Hopefully it will be the whole series.

A high price but that's just RRP so online it will be a lot cheaper (even more so if they were HD DVD only) but not having bought any of the DVD releases there is a big hole in my collection but not touching combo releases, no sale

Must be season 1. No way could you fit 79 episodes (the full run) onto 10 discs...

And there's the clarification - it is season 1 only....

The TOS-R HD/DVD Season 1 Combo Set is due out in November/December of this Year (US, Japan…and maybe Europe).

Re: Star Trek: The Original Series (HD DVD)

Smallville HD DVD sets were on 5 discs for 22 episodes, so can't see 79 episodes fitting on 10 discs with all the extras. But I see Kieron has confirmed it anyway.

Bloody expensive for one season. No way will I be buying that. I would probably go to £40 for one season but nothing more. $218

Bloody expensive for one season. No way will I be buying that. I would probably go to £40 for one season but nothing more. $218
I agree - scandalous. I'm over in Vegas on November 28th so will scout around Wal Marts, Best Buy's to try and pick it up cheap. Best Buy usually are great on new releases.

I'd spring to $150 (75 quid) but no more. I am Star Trek mad though!

What's the RRP for the BluRay version?
