Question Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

Just a thought. No hidden adgenda here.
Are all you Blu-Ray and HDDVD folks out there spending your hard-earned on films that you don't necessarily like but are just feeding your Hi-Def cravings?

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

HD is certainly tipping the balance in favour of some content I don't or wouldn't own on DVD and at the same time the lack of HD is stopping me buying content that is currently offered only on DVD.
Never going to buy something I am not interested in on any format

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I agree with Starburst. I have slowed down on sdDVD purchases and own something like 30 HDDVD's.

I would never buy something I wasn't interested in. Example is the Matrix trilogy. I own a nice boxset on DVD, and whilst I would love the first one on HD, the 2 sequels put me off re-purchasing.

I have double dipped quite a bit though, but again these were films I do like, and watch.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I only buy films that I really enjoy or films I havent seen. As a result of the second option, I do end up with titles that I wouldnt have bought otherwise (Eragon & Messengers on Blu-ray and Alpha Dog & Pulse on HD DVD).

I couldn't understand if people are buying films they dont enjoy just because it's Hi Def. I think you see saying others will buy anything on Hi Def, but you have to remember people like different movies, I own some great movies in HD Children of Me, Matrix, The Thing but then I also have End Of Days, Hulk, Van Helsing... because I do enjoy them!

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I;ve seen enough (7) HD films to convince me not to waste any more cash on DVD's.

That said, I won't be making the plays that I did with DVD way back then.

That being the purchase of a so so film that happened to have amazing A/V quality.

As I build my HD collection, i'll only be adding those fave films of mine that can stand up to repeated viewings.

I'm certainly renting stuff that I wouldn't cosider buying, just because it's HD, sometimes I'll find something good anf go on to buy it.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

Yeah I'm a bit like that, but I'm always looking for bargains, thats the only reason I bought UltraViolet was it was a cheap price. But I will replace movies I have on DVD, like the Terminator movies, The Untouchables, The Thing, Matrix Trilogy etc. But another thing this hd bug has me doing is upgrading equipment, just in the last week I've purchased an Onkyo 605 amp as I want to hear with my own ears PCM 5.1 and the other HiDef soundtracks, I also purchased a Tosh E1, was getting fed up of the 360 noise and wanted the HD soundtracks from my HD-DVDs. Man I've got to stop now.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I certainly widen my tolerances when it comes to buying HD movies. Same as any new tech - DVD when it first came out, xbox 360 etc. While the choice is limited, I'll buy the best of what's available, but when the releases start to pour out, I just cherry pick the outstanding titles.

Unfortunately though the titles released on HD DVD and Blu Ray have so far been utter dross, so apart from the Matrix on HD DVD and my free copy of Casino Royale on BD, I haven't bought anything for ages.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I buy good films after research. I will also try new things that might stimulate the mind, however that has been the same with all formats so I don't see HD any different.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I've started buying HD and Blu ray discs and I haven't even got anything to play / view it on yet

As I am just in the process of finalising all my new kit and have identified an install date next month, I will be using these initial discs to demo my potential new tv and associated hardware

I intend to replace all my fave films on HD / Blu ray and then sell the old stndard def ones .. along with a load of other early dvd purchases that I really don't watch now ... and need to make some room for new HD discs

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I own a grand total of 7 BR films. I'm still buying stuff in SD like tv series and any films that i quite like the look of but may sell on later.

I'm not double dipping, yet, but only buying films i really want and will keep.
So i own Apocalypso, Kingdom of Heaven, MI:3, Lady in the Water, We Were Soldiers and Casino Royal.

I've only mentioned 6 because the other one is UltraViolet which I got bundled with my PS3 and we don't talk about that one .

Yes, I've bought some...ahem...'demo material', which I wouldn't normally watch.

But then again, I remember doing that in the early days of both LaserDisc and DVD - it soon tailed off.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

No sir. If I buy a movie on HD it's because I like the film. I've bought some recent films 'blind' on HD, but that's only because I've ceased buying new releases on DVD. If I don't like the flick then it gets sold.

Hell will freeze over before I buy utter crap like Ultraviolet or Aeon Flux just because they're in HD.

Re: Do you buy Hi Def films out of morbid curiosity?

I'm a bit up and down on this recently. On upgrading the 360 and getting the PS3 I started to buy HD DVDs and Blu Rays and was buying way less sdDVDs. With the the firmware upgrade of the PS3 that makes it a pretty good upscaler, the bargain hunter in me has started buying more sdDVDs than HD material now. The big blockbusters I'll wait for in HD (upcoming Transformers, Die Hard 4.0 Spiderman 3 etc) but otherwise I'll probably just get them on sdDVD 'cause I'm very impressed with the PS3s upscaling.
