Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

Saw this over on AVS:-

http://www.dvdreview.com/news/

'In addition to “Masters Of Horror” we have heard mention of another number of Blu-Ray titles from Anchor Bay, scheduled for Halloween. Look out for announcements of John Carpenter’s Halloween, Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II and George A. Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead to be released on Blu-Ray some time in September or early October.'

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

Great news. If they could get all 3 cuts of the original dawn of the dead on blu-ray via seamless branching then that would be superb! However I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the director's cut.

Fantastic news ... looks like I am miving onto HD at just the right time as all my fave movies are coming out, although its not great for the bank balance and its hard enough justifying re-purchases of dvd's over and over .. now I need HD / Blu ray versions.

I reckon Dawn of the Dead is the movie I must have had the most verisons of

First got the UK "cut" version
Then got the UK "fully uncut" version
Then got the remastered Reg.1 one DTS version
THEN got the multi disc box set with 4 versions of the film

NOW ... I "need" the HD vesion ... its great aint it

Sweet! Hope I can remember how to turn my PS3... it's been a while! Roll on September.

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

Nice.

Have seen both Dawn and Day in HD.

Can't remember if Dawn was the Dir. cut or Extended, but the picture was great. Best I've seen on this film.

Day was sharper than the AB Divimax but a little dirtier, but had the correct soundtrack. My guess is the print used wasn't AnchorBay's

Here's hoping for all three versions of Dawn (Boxset or seamless branching), and Day with the correct soundtrack, not that which was on the Divimax pressing.

Been waiting for a decision making movie. HD DVD or Blu-ray? So now we know.

Thanks OP

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

Damn. I'm just about holding off getting a BD deck, but those Anchor Bay titles will tip me over the edge!!!

I've also bought Dawn loads of times (laserdisc boxset x2, original AB DVD, UK censored DVD, French 'Zombi' DVD, Dutch 2-disc DVD, AB remastered DVD, AB remastered DVD boxset) and won't think twice about getting it in HD.

I pray for two things: that Starz/AB put the US theatrical edit on there (best version IMO) and don't region code it.

Not even close, mate!

First a copy from the original UK release (banned after the '84 VRC)
Second a UK cut VHS when it was re-released
Third an import of the US theatrical version on VHS
Fourth US LaserDisc boxed-set
Fifth US DVD of the theatrical version
Sixth European import of the Italian cut
Seventh US 'Ultimate Edition' boxed-set
Eight UK DVD Uncut Theatrical Version (what, with PAL being better than NTSC)

I'm sure some others have more.

Joking aside, I'm really loking forward to these. But I hope Anchor Bay manage to do something huicy all at once, rather than letting individual discs come out, then expecting us to buy a future boxed-set for all the other editions.

A real 'Ultimate Dead Box' would include:

'NOTLD' (Milenium Edition)

'Dawn...' (Ultimate Edition)

'Day...' (Divimax Edition)

Put them together in a boxed-set, and I'm happy forever.

But if not, I'll be happy with just the Theatrical Cut of 'Dawn...' in high def.

Steve W

Exactly what I consider to be my "Ultimate" Edition, although I would like to seen the supposed Ultimate version of Dawn but doubt we will ever see an English version.

Just seen this on DavisDVD

Finally some must have exclusives for Blu-ray

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

That's a great ad from Anchor Bay. The first four for me.

I'm so excited by these titles.

I'd probably go for Masters of Horror if they did a reasonably priced boxset. So I'll hold fire on those for the time being.

Then 2 VHS versions

and also a Laserdisc version

Jeeeeeeeeeeeees, we all clearly love "DAWN"

Bring on the HD versions ... and lets keep buying it more

I first saw it on betamax in the 80s.In fact initially watching the remastered dvds felt odd ; seeing a clean restored image on a very large screen,DTS and correct aspect ratio.

As much as I'm a stickler for all these things I think Dawn is the only movie that would feel right to me on VHS/Betamax, 4:3 pan and scan on a 21" wooden tv.

Maybe because Evil Dead would not sell in a rated form and there aren't any unrated horror films on Blu-ray.

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

Anchor Bay recently did a new HD transfer of Evil Dead 2 so that should look pretty good, yet I doubt that Evil Dead would benefit much from an HD upgrade, shot as it was on 16mm. Army Of Darkness looks great in HD, but as a bigger studio picture that doesn't surprise me.

Actually yeah I kinda know what you mean by this.

The early 80's were great weren't they ... you could go down the video rental store (as a kid) and rent out Dawn or Zombie Flesh Eaters, take it home, watch with your mates .. all on glorious VHS / Betamax qaulity .. made the experience seam more real somehow !

Good memories

We all clearly have the same great taste in the most classic of horror movies and all of them coming out at once

Halloween / Dawn / Day & Evil Dead 2

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

I wonder just how much a low budget film like 'Dawn...' can gain from high def.

It's one of my favourite films, so I hope I'm wrong.

'Halloween', I can really see looking great.

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

From the Dawn Of The Dead Review at DVDAuthority (I won't provide a link):

"...this new transfer is a revelation... you wouldn't know this was made in 1978 based on this presentation. The image is almost pristine here, like brand new and the visuals are so crisp, so sharp, you might not believe your eyes... All in all, a dynamic transfer that will fans over the moon. "

It looks like Starz have done an amazing job with their first batch of Hi-Def titles.

It's one of my favourite films, so I hope I'm wrong.

'Halloween', I can really see looking great.

Having seen both in high def (broadcast, not discs), I'd have to say that Dawn was way better than Day. And Day is my fave.

Day was very sharp, but still contained a lot of dirt on the print. Okay the dirt was sharper, but still...

Dawn was outstanding.

Re: Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray

On the commentary for Dawn (DVD) the film makers complained about the primatve zombie make-up, it was fine for black and white, but didn't work with the colour Dawn, according to them anyway.

Personally I much prefare this basic Zombie make-up than the extravagent 'monster' make-up of Day and Land of the dead.

Should look stunning in HD.

Yes, you are correct. The 3M blood used in Dawn really does look poor in HD, almost a watered-down red paint, and yes the zombies are now a very "unrealistic" (If a zombie can ever be realistic) blue.

But Dawn was never about realism. It was the situation that was important, and in that respect, and ignoring those inaccuracies, I rate the HD transfer very high. Everything really does look like it was shot yesterday. Every shot in the mall is spectacular. The corridors are suitably dark (moody) and all the mall shots are beautifully bright and sharp.

Day, on the other hand is all about real. The blood should be "blood red" and is. All the dark stuff is suitably gloomy. the few bright scenes are really nice and all the red stuff is now a very "gooey" red.

As long as we get the correct soundtrack on Day. Are you reading this Starz/AB?
