Pirates Of The Caribbean, AVC and Blu-ray the new reference?

Early signs are that POTC will be the best optical HD movie out beating previous efforts from VC-1's King Kong and MPEG-2's Crank.

My POTC disc is being processed atm so I should get it in the next few days but post your thought here as and when you get these discs. Screen caps welcome.

So while we wait lets speculate, has AVS come of age and will we see this codec become the defecto standard for optical media? Or has Disney just put a lot of effort into this transfer? Or have Disney just got lucky with a clean print? What does this mean for VC-1? Does high bitrate AVC justify a BD50? Should MS reverse their policy on ultra low bitrates in order to win back the crown? If AVC is King should WB ditch VC-1?

3-2-1 go!

In my opinion both are excellent, and very similar codecs, I'd go along with the assumption that POTC are extremely good looking sources to work with and this is probably the main reason for them potentially (only seen one review thus far so the jury's still out really) being the new benchmark in video quality.

As long as it spells the death knell of MPEG2 then evryone's a winner.

They don't usually telecine print film these days . In the case of POTC the video releases will have been derived from either a Digital Intermediate master or a 2k datacine of the entire conformed film neg.

Re: POTC, AVC and Blu-ray the new reference?

I've never had a problem with MPEG2 myself, but if the adoption of, for example, AVC and TruHD means that we can have very high bit rates for video, lossless sound and extras then thats good news.

Was very impressed by Casino Royale, which I think was Sony's first AVC title.

Re: POTC, AVC and Blu-ray the new reference?

Personally I've always expected h.264 to come good, although its possible that this case may be more by brute force than finesse i.e. just uses BD's capacity and BW to get quality. So , will be interresting to here what bit rate its encoded at...

Re: POTC, AVC and Blu-ray the new reference?

I'd expect nothing less than an excellent transfer from Dead Man's Chest given the 720p trailer on Xbox Live Marketplace looks great to start off with. Factor in the extra resolution and better encode and we should have reference material.

Not sure about Curse of the Black Pearl though; presumably it will be similar in video quality considering it's only 4 years old.

Does this go for both DMC and COTBP?

I go on holiday on Friday so I guess I'll have to wait until next week to watch DMC. I'll catch up on this thread when I get back.

DMC I would stake my life on the digital intermediate being the source for the video masters. POTC might be derived from a datacine of the conformed neg.
I'd bet a billion quid they never telecined print for either.

Nope, Disney are a bit hit and miss - some are and some aren't, where as all Fox Region A are. Strangely two Fox Region B titles are actually region A and B according to their boxes (Men Of Honor and Entrapment).

What has a post speculating about a future software release got to do with a forum for High Definition DVD Players?

Two fanboys wrongs don't make a right. This thread is still in the wrong place.

I'll wait until someone here has seen the discs rather than speculating.

People on AVS (and I believe here now) already have both discs. Very high bitrate AVC, there's some photo's over at AVS that shows the PS3 bitrate meter at 46mbps. General consensus are that these two discs are at the very top of the picture quality tree (along with the likes of King Kong, Crank, The Matrix etc).

High-Def Digest also have just reviewed them both,

Re: POTC, AVC and Blu-ray the new reference?

To be honest looking at VC-1 and AVC together they both produce an awesome picture! I would be more than happy to have either. Surely the most important thing for us as consumers is that these two codecs produce stunning pictures?

Onto the whole region thingy, I didn't really want to take a chance so I've bought the region B version from play. Just to be safe.

If bitrates like that actually lead to a demonstrable improvement in PQ (and I've always thought the best BD & HD encoding was NEVER transparent) then we may have an interesting choice on the market:

HD: Cheaper players
BD: Better picture quality

So far, there has never been any suggestion that BD might be able to capitalise on it's higher capacity and bit rate to improve PQ, but perhaps the BDA are starting to turn the tables on early disappointments like The Fifth Element and take the high ground.

This is, simply put, a perfect transfer. It's the best of the best, and the disc is worth a purchase for the image alone.
