That is normal for shops like that and others like HMV.

How about Saw III for £33.99 and online too which is usually cheaper.

That was the prices i saw in virgin oxford st. total rip if you ask me. but they did have total recal and elephant man for £15 on HD DVD so bought elephant man instead

HMV on oxford street was the same with new releases but older ones were £18ish. They did have an excellent collection though!

The price must come down soon!

Those are the sort of prices VHS films used to be.

When they were charging around £40 for a VHS, renting cost around £2-£2.50 per night.

In light of the above, just think what a rip off Blockbusters high street rentals are when DVD's generally cost £15 to buy, and are rented out at around £3.95

Thank God for postal rentals is all I can say.

Where I live you can't buy Blu-Ray in the high street yet. In fact I asked in Virgin the other day "when they will be stocking Blu-Ray?" and the girl looked at me and said "Blue what? Never heard of it"

She then asked the male member of staff next to her and he said "probably won't bother mate, it's not going to be popular enough"

I remember VHS being £80+ before they came out to buy at Woolies which also took years after the film came out.

Blockbusters are also now £3.95 each for one night (used to be 2 nights) for a new release that week. They have changed it so 2 are £7 for 2 nights or 3 for £10 for 2 nights.

Yeah, but that was when Blockbusters had some high street competition, and you could go to one of three or four 'local' rental stores.... excluding your small selections at places like victoria wine, or the local grocers etc.

I can't remember the last time I saw a video store that wasn't blockbusters...

slowly some stores in Edinburgh are selling HDDVD and BlueRay titles, but to be honest they are overpriced, and not got a hope of selling alot of units.
Why ? because the people who have invested in such formats (us), are wise to rip off Britain. The net is the way to go for the formats software for the next year or so.
I cant see me ever buying a title on shop shelves for the forseeable future. That goes for 360 games as well, and indeed sdDVDS.
Possibly Joe Bloggs may buy the odd Blueray title after buying a PS3, just for curiosity sakes, but any serious enthusiast will have ordered online.

Right, don't misunderstand me, I totally agree that it's a complete rip off. By which I mean someone is making an absolute fortune.

But I'll tell you what, even at £30+, it's not bad. We're a bit spoiled, I think.

I think I'd better explain before I'm lynched.

I remember being in a film club at school, way back in '79 or '80 or something.

We had a 16mm projector, and we'd cram into a room to watch films - always at least a few years old, widescreen was "What exactly?" and the PQ & SQ must have been terrible. And I bet it cost £30 or £40 a film to rent.

At that time 'home cinema' was a millionaires toy: 35mm projector, custom built theatre, rent the film, hire a projectionist for the night. And I bet the PQ & SQ would have been worse than what we have now.

So yes, complain, the thieving baskets are extracting the urine.

But boy oh boy, are we living at the right time, or what.

I personally think it's a shocking disgrace that Blue Ray and HD DVD films should be set at such high prices in those high street stores. Surely watchdog or trading standards should get involved here. It's nothing more than a rip off scam in my book...

Sometimes I wonder who makes up these prices

Last time I was in Virgin MI3 was £30 on HD-DVD but the MI1,2,3 box set was only £35.

On the same day I bought GRAW2 on 360 from HMV for £37. Most of the games in there were reasonably priced apart from Fifa 06 which was priced at £49.99

But they are on-line. casino royal £13ish from sendit.com but its £25 in HMV. so basicly HMV must be making £12+ profit from the sale. These stores don't care what format wins just as long as they make the most money out of us!

I will be going to a HMV today so i will ask the manager how he can justify these prices

Its amazing to me that people actually buy stuff like this in the High Street these days whenever there is so much choice online. We're constantly being told to support our high street retailer and to buy british...maybe it would be easier to do this if we weren't being shafted by them at every turn.

It didn't stop DVD. HMV sold Matrix Reloaded for £27.99 on DVD when it first came out and their DVD's are still often £19.99.

Just to point out that Asda does have some reasonable price to, My uncle got Casino Royal Blu-ray from Asda at around £16 which is not supper cheap but not expensive and It’s nice to see the big shops selling them, as hopefully that will help bring the price down,
I order most my stuff on line but it would be nice to just go into a shop and by a film to watch

You are seeing these because essentially the general public is getting HD-capable players earlier in the cycle that what happened with DVD. These sort of very high prices were there at the beginning of that but 99% of the public was pretty much unaware of DVD hence it was never an issue.

In my local blockbuster they were selling blu ray films for £12.99. The most expensive one they had was £20. That was cheaper than most online stores.

I usually compare the price of a disc to a cinema ticket (around £8/9 where I live) so there for if I am going to watch a blu-ray at least twice and it costs £20 then I will happily buy it - if however its an unknown quantity from a film point of view then I will probably just buy the dvd instead

It does annoy me that there isnt an rrp on any hidef disc as yet (ie different stores are pricing the same film /same format at completely different prices)

Depending on the saving and whether I need something urgently or not I dont like ordering online simply because with most orders it seems to take 4 days at best (and sometimes over 10) to get any disc - and I think thats awful service , much prefer to pay £3 more (the typical difference I have seen between high street and net prices) and have it in my hand there and then

Blockbuster are actually selling the Bluray discs relatively cheaply. Kunfu Hustle is £12.99 and quite a few others are £17.99. I think the dearest is £23.99

To be honest, only HMV seem to be ripping people off locally here. X-Men is 50euro. I've seen GameStop with some for 17.99 (mainly Kung Fu Hustle, Layer Cake, Emily Rose, Monster House and Talladega Nights).

It's such a shame for the format that it's not gone down the region free route that HD-DVD has, and that may be what kills it.
