HD-DVD "The Departed" on its way to me

Had an email from my US supplier to let me know that my HD-DVD copy of The Departed is being packaged - should be on its way as I type. The picture quality of the SD DVD disc has had rave reviews so let's hope the Hi Def one is equally as good - hey, it's HD, it should be better !

...and mine turned up this morning, pretty good service ! Spinning the DVD side, I'm surprised at how rough the SD looks, must try the HiDef side. There's a good trailer for 300 by the way on the standard side.

Re: HD-DVD "The Departed" on its way to me

...the Hi-Def side is pretty darn good, I have to say, one of the sharpest I've seen so far. One thing though - who said we were easily satisfied - is that the combi disc doesn't contain the 90 minute long "Scorcese on Scorcese" special feature that's on the separate SD DVD, which appears to be Martin Scorcese talking about his career in films. Hey ! I wanted that ! Oh well, you can't have everything - sure they could have fitted it on the disc, though...

Re: HD-DVD "The Departed" on its way to me

I've heard the HD-DVD version isnt very good - quite soft image? Anyone confirm?

Anyone got the Blu-ray version? Will it be the same version?

Don't know where you heard that because the HD-DVD version is certainly not soft, and the cinematographer Michael Balhaus is not exactly known as a "soft" photographer. He does produce gritty images, especially in Gangs of New York, which had a pretty awful edge-enhanced DVD release. There is none of that on "The Departed" and its probably the best new film released on either HiDef formats so far, can't think what could be better. Terrific soundtrack as well.

Re: HD-DVD "The Departed" on its way to me

Noticed that The Departed is priced at £18.99 at Movietyme, is this all that you paid or were there any added on costs? Never ordered from overseas before.

Thanks.

£18.99 is all you pay with no other added costs, and this looks very similar to the price tbeing charging for the 2 disc SD DVD.

Some one over at the dvdforums has it - not seen any published reviews yet or anyone raving about it so will hold off judgement.

Mate, there's an outdoor scene with Jack Nicholson, and the quality is so good that if the room you were watching it in was breezy you'd swear blind you were right there with the actors.

Re: HD-DVD "The Departed" on its way to me

I have just watched it, and it has an absolutely incredible picture. It is the very best HDDVD I have got (inc. MI3, Batman etc). Also, a very good film to boot (although I do prefer Infernal Affairs as a movie).

10/10 for Picture Quality. Incredible.

Re: HD-DVD "The Departed" on its way to me

Watched the HD DVD of this on Friday and, yes, it's excellent all-round. Definitely one to demo your system with; the TrueHD track is tremendous, even downscaled through the 360. I can only imagine how stunning it must sound at full bit-rate.

Roll on the XE1 so I can find out!

Regardless of PQ of the new HD version, the original Infernal Affairs has much to commend. You have the original plot and the trilogy.
