Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

That's four must have titles all in one go.

I thnk it is solid back catalogue titles like these that will sway the format war. Fanboys in both camps seem to base their arguments for format victory on a handful of blockbusters exclusive to their chosen formats, but at the end of the day the number of blockbuster exclusives are relatively small and once we get past those, we're going to be looking at quality back catalogue titles like these. Besides, I'd take any of the above titles over Star Wars or PJ's King Kong any day.

Interesting that Ran is coming on HD DVD as this was originally a 20th Century Fox title, who are, at the moment, Blu Ray exclusive.

Exclamation Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

Hi,

Bearing in mind, the suggested price on HMV's site, I severely doubt that "Brotherhood Of The Wolf" will be the longer, 152-minute (NTSC-formatted) version, but will be the bog-standard, 140-minute (approx, PAL-formatted) theatrical version, that has already been released on UK and US DVD.

The only, current, way to obtain the Director's 152-minute Cut of this movie, is via the special 3-disc Canadian release of the movie, but I'm pretty certain it's been a long time out of print.

HMV have now upped the price on all 4 to £17.99. They did something similar with The Pianist and La Haine and then dropped them back down to £12.99 when they shipped.

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

Ahh...looks like I will need the HD DVD add on for my 360 after all. I was going to hold out until the end of the year to get a HD DVD player so I can have uncompressed sound. But Ran and Brotherhood of the Wolf are two films I'd dearly like to have (along with 2001, Blade Runner and quite a few others).

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

Just got an reply from Optimum after asking them about the HD DVD Release..

"We will be releasing the HD on March 5th
The film will be the same cut as the previous universal disc

If you decide to order it direct from our website, there’s a chance that you’ll receive the DVD a few days before its release.
Regards"

Bad news is that it is cut, good news you can get it a few days before it hits the steet, I have a feeling that HMV will be the only place to get it, as it's one of those films which does not sell well/have a big audience, so most HMV's won't even stock it.., unless your at the Oxford Street branch good luck picking it up instore, I'll probably order from the Optimum website...

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

It's wrong to say that the film is cut as it is the complete version that was released in cinemas worldwide. The 152 minute version was specially extended for the Canadian DVD 3 disc set.

More often than not the "director's cut" is nothing of the sort (the Blade Runner DC being a case in point) and is often nothing more than a way of encouraging a double-dip on DVD. As Ridley Scott has said when discussing the recent "special edition" of Alien, the director's cut was released in the cinemas in 1979.

The French release is slated for the 21st of May (delayed from a March release in order to implement the new AACS revisions), so this coming Monday was never going to happen anyway.
It would make sense that a UK release would be one or more months behind the French SC release judging by already-released SC titles i.e. June seems a logical possibility for a UK release.

Play.com have now moved it forward to 28th May. Whereas Amazon (who I have it pre-ordered with) have it in October and have upped the price to £14.99... luckily the order on my account is still showing as £11.99.

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

Well,I have it but it ain't pretty.First, this is the same print used on the 3 Disc Canadian DVD(which I assume is the same as the French) and as many of you know that print was filled with halos, edge enhancement, excess grain, smudged colours, pixellation, and more.In fact, that was the worst print of the movie possible, digitally spiked to look more sharp for DVD.
Well, for HD you can at least take the pixellation out of it,but the rest is the same.In fact,I compared it to my Canadian copy(upscaled) and it's virtually identical. You don't even get the extra detail that's supposed to show on HD,the image looks incredibly two dimensional and fake, which is really bad considering the lush visuals of the film.
I have an European version of the SD DVD(not French or from the U.K)and it's far more natural, with great colours, with probably more detail than this mess.
Honestly, this is the worst looking HD-DVD on my collection,if you have the Canadian version don't bother with it,honestly.Only have two more titles by Studio Canal,Elephant Man and First Blood but they do look good given their limitations, but this...

P.S:At least the sound is excellent, and it is the preferred Director's Cut that explains a lot of character disapperences and reunions(after they leave the town and return it's a bit muddy and confusing in the Theatrical Cut)

If its not any better than the dvd then I think I will have to give it a miss then (which is a shame). I have the R2 'metropolitan filmexport' edition which in truth isn't too bad. Is this the one you were referring to (its 2 hours 17 mins long) ? thanks

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

I must say that I thought it was an improvement on the 3-Disc Canadian DVD release I had. Although, I do remember reading somewhere the PQ on the Canadian version suffered a little for the inclusion of the DTS soundtrack.

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

There is an improvement, albeit very very small, practically indiscernible. The pixellation doesn't happen anymore but that was only visable in DVD on large screens,so if you have a 32 or smaller you may not notice it.That's the only real improvement I can see, detail is about the same.If you figure it's worth a re-buy then suit yourselves,I think it's not worth it.

Re: Brotherhood of the wolf HD-DVD

Im not ususally one for ordering films on the back of threads but having read this (and another) thread discussing it I might give it a whirl. I have not researched it at all but I seem to remember someone saying it was subtitled.
Is this the case?
