Saving Private Ryan, HD-DVD?

Is SPR going to be released on HD-DVD? If so, any idea on the release date?

well, given that it is Paramount there is a very good chance. I would love to see this, but there is no word yet (that I can see)

It was one of the original HD DVD lineup - so expect to see it soon, HBO are only slowly moving into the high def disc market but I should imagine this series will be high on their list.

Both titles are from studios that support both formats.

Re: Saving Private Ryan, HD-DVD?

Under the current circumstances, it'll probably never see the light of day on HD DVD now

Still, if there's one movie that'll ever persuade me to go Blu, that could be it

Yeah I watched it on SkyHD last week too, it was amazing.
I guess when it comes out on Blu-Ray (or whatever format) it will look and sound even better!!

Re: Saving Private Ryan, HD-DVD?

First up, I agree that SPR will probably never see the light of day on HD DVD.

But I'm not sure it's quite as impossible as some are presuming.

Now I don't believe on balance that the following is going to happen, just that it's a possibility.

If (big if, I know) Universal and Paramount (or maybe just Universal) stick with HD DVD, what are they going to do? I don't think 'continue as normal' is an option. They're going to have to do something. Something pretty big.

One option is a slew of big releases.

Currently we have no evidence that SS has any clause in his Universal contract to say he can dictate what gets released and how. We know this for Paramount, but comments on Universal release rumours have never said "Spielburg won't allow it - he has the right to say no".

Currently he's stuck with Paramount, but wants to leave and go back to Universal; apparently he likes it there.

So maybe it's a question of how the negotiations with Universal go. If they're close to signing on the dotted line, but he's unsure, the straw thast breaks the camel's back might be to insist Universal drop HD DVD.

If theboot is on the other foot, Universal's final demand might be that he drops his objections.

As I say, I don't think the above is going to happen. I just think it's not absolutely impossible.

Re: Saving Private Ryan, HD-DVD?

Didn't the Paramount HD-DVD press release in August state that it excluded the films of Mr Spielberg?

Yes, it did.

My mistake, I thought SPR was Universal for some reason.

Has been available for quite some time now but at £100 its abit much and now that HBO have gone Blu-Ray exclusive any UK or US release will be Blu-Ray not HD-DVD.
