| Re: Saving Private Ryan, HD-DVD?
First up, I agree that SPR will probably never see the light of day on HD DVD.
But I'm not sure it's quite as impossible as some are presuming.
Now I don't believe on balance that the following is going to happen, just that it's a possibility.
If (big if, I know) Universal and Paramount (or maybe just Universal) stick with HD DVD, what are they going to do? I don't think 'continue as normal' is an option. They're going to have to do something. Something pretty big.
One option is a slew of big releases.
Currently we have no evidence that SS has any clause in his Universal contract to say he can dictate what gets released and how. We know this for Paramount, but comments on Universal release rumours have never said "Spielburg won't allow it - he has the right to say no".
Currently he's stuck with Paramount, but wants to leave and go back to Universal; apparently he likes it there.
So maybe it's a question of how the negotiations with Universal go. If they're close to signing on the dotted line, but he's unsure, the straw thast breaks the camel's back might be to insist Universal drop HD DVD.
If theboot is on the other foot, Universal's final demand might be that he drops his objections.
As I say, I don't think the above is going to happen. I just think it's not absolutely impossible.
