Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

Relevant links:
http://hddvdformat.blogspot.com/2007...al-hd-dvd.html
http://www.dvdcrave.com/
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/
These two Oz sites look to be the cheapest incl. P&P. I haven't used them before, so any relevant feedback from people who have would be welcome.

I've bought stuff from both, although it's been a couple of years since I've gotten anything from either of them.
Good experience with both, goods arrived in a week or so, if I recollect correctly.

Apparantly the French HD DVD Rambo is really bad quality (vhs), i'm dual format so will pick up the blu ray version as its been reported to be very good.

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

One thing to note is that although the Oz release of these films is through Universal Australia, there's a Studio Canal label on the covers of these discs (visible at EzyDVD), implying that these are the Studio Canal transfers of these films.
Price-wise it seems then that we can do a direct comparison with the French online retailers. The Oz ones come out cheaper.

DVDCrave = AUS$34.95 (excl. GST) + AUS$4.50 P&P = AUS$39.45 / UK£15.54 (at today's forex rate).
FNAC = EU€25 + EU€8 P&P = EU€33 / UK£21.75 (at today's forex rate).

I used https://www.currenciesdirect.com/ for the Forex rates.

On a completely different note and if these are indeed the SC transfers, will Total Recall also have the high-pitched audio as AVS noted about the French release.

And with the rumours that Lions Gate is switching to authoring in VC1, an interesting one will be to see how the LG transfers compare with the SC transfers. Or would it be one and the same transfer?

I assume they will be the Studio Canal releases, so are likely to suffer the same issue. Will know shortly as I'm getting these ones over the French ones (much prefer the Australian Rambo covers )

Rambo on Blu Ray is supposed to be an AVC release. According to those that have seen it over on AVS, its quite a bit better than the French Studio C release.

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

I have the three films (French) and (as per previous thread) confirm that the quality is indeed very high. The AV review of Rambo 3 confirms this if you are in any doubt. http://avplay.avforums.com/index.php?reviewid=12605

First Blood - Very good transfer (apart from the forest fight)
Rambo : First Blood Part 2 is an absolutely awesome transfer. Best of the 3
Rambo 3 - again, excellent transfer, in particular the desert scenes.

If they are improved upon I will be very curious. I dont regret buying them in the slightest .

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

On more general note re Studio Canal releases, I have The Elephant Man and King Kong (1976) and I think they have excellent pictures. Total recall is on route and I think I will add Rambo 1 (?) and Basic Instinct tonight judging by what I have seen so far. These releases look brilliant for their age and someone has made them look lovely. This is a 'studio' to watch for the future....

Still waiting for mine to arrive. Total Recall shipped earlier in the week, but none of the Rambo's have yet. I imagine they will be identical to the French releases, but will post more when they turn up.

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

Hi pash,

Other than the obvious amazon.co.uk/com, movietyme and the like, for releases in France take a look at:
http://www.amazon.fr/
and do a search for the text string "hd dvd" in the DVD section of the site.

Alternatively go to
http://www.fnac.com/
click on the DVD tab, then choose the BD/HD DVD section from the left-hand menu.

For releases in Germany take a look at:
http://www.amazon.de/
and do a search for the text string "hd dvd" in the DVD section of the site.

For releases in Australia take a look at:
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/
and do a search for HD DVD once again.

For releases in Spain take a look at:
http://www.dvdgo.com/
the HD DVD list is linked in the left-hand menu.

One more site worth mentioning is:
http://www.dvdworldusa.com/
They list several more US releases than I've found on other US sites e.h. Golgo 13, Galaxina etc.

Happy hunting!

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

I received First Blood yesterday from Oz.

Picture is good for a movie it's age but like the Rambo disc suffers from some softening in places. For example, in the scene where the Sheriff and John are in the car as John is escourted out of the town, the close ups of their faces are not as detailed as I might have expected.

Menu is accessable "in the movie". As I said though, overall for a movie it's age this is the best quality version I have ever seen.

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

Interesting thread on AVS comparing different versions of Rambo:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=803170
with what looks like a good summary in post #40 of the thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&&#post9746416

And things look to be getting real interesting with the Matrix now being listed for April pre-order on HD DVD:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=803912
That is, of course, if Futureshop's listings don't turn out to be "premature".

Sadly, Futureshop doesn't ship outside of Canada... just in case anyone was getting excited and might have been more than a little tempted

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

I have the 3 Rambos from France and First Blood on Blu-ray.
I didn't find First Blood as bad as others had said and I was quite happy with it, when I heard the BD version was better I'd thought I 'd give it a go.

It's been about 2 weeks between watching the HD-DVD version and the Blu-ray version but imo the Blu-ray one does look better, it's not perfect but a lot of the poorer looking scene on the HD-DVD version look better, it also has more sound options, better menus and has extra's on it (making of, deleted scenes, trivia etc.).

Studio Canal is also printed on the back of the Blu-ray version.

The cover of Rambo 2 on the French release is so dumb.

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

Can anyone explain the audio options on myTotal Recall?

The back of the case indicates DTS HD for English and also shows the DD+ logo.

When you select English you are then presented with just two options of English 5.1 and English 5.1 with subtitles.

Sounds OK but not as good as Chronicles of Riddick in DTS HD.

I would have been happier with a DD EX and DTS ES soundtrack. At least my amp would have decoded that OK.

The picture is good. I only got half way through and will watch the rest now.

Re: Only a few days to go for Oz HD DVD release of Rambo and Total Recall

I've watched it all now and I must say the AVplay review, on the sound, is quite accurate.
There's not much happening in the LF range and most of the sound seems to be coming from the front speakers.
I'll compare it to my DVD on the weekend and report back.
