Exclamation What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

Hiya all,

I currently own a Toshiba HD A1, haven't had any problems at all, (so far, touch wood!!!!) I own about 20-25 HD DVD's and so far very inpressed!!!

But is something going on i dont know about?????? The list of new films being released on BLU RAY is soooooooo much better than HD DVD, i mean it came out after yet not only must there be a lot more out now, the quality of titles is so much better too!!!!

The other very annoying thing is i dont know if anyone has noticed but a lot of the titles which are out on HD DVD are also being released onto BLU RAY too but it doesn't work the other way around!!!!

Should we be thinking bout cuttin our losses on this HD DVD player and going to BLU RAY????

I'm sure i'm not the only one in here with cash waiting to be spent on HD movies so i just cant understand why on earth they wont release any!!!!!!

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

I sold my HD a1 because I needed the cash, the wife said I could buy another player later but looking at the HD DVD release list Im having second thoughts.

Blue ray schedule looks brilliant, I think I could live without the films on HD DVD but some of the Blue says discs are must own to me

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

We have had alot of announcements from BD

announcements do not equal releases.

Casino Royale was announced at CES as a Feb release on BD, surely thats an alarmingly short time to high street

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

you should do that.give that toshiba which is a quality machine to someone who is a ht enthiuast, not someone who just plays games.Bd has more releases at the moment due to there support, whats holding me back is there region coding and from what I read which came from panasonic is the biggest mistake sony has done is release movies under the mpeg 2 codec.Until the new codec has been improved like the so called h.264 which panasonic is trying to organise and region coding is gone the HD-dvd looks like a better choice to experience HD.
Sony playstaion 3 tsk! tsk! its a childs machine.

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

Hi,

Yes, HD-DVD does seem to have lost momentum a little lately, after getting off to a good start (price/performance wise anyway).

I'm not going to hop onto the blu-ray train until the second generation hardware appears, and all the promised features are implemented. The disk catalog is certainly getting there though - assuming they deliver...

In fairness apart from a few delayed/postponed releases everything that has been announced (with a release date) has actually been released, so announcements with dates does actually equal a release.

Casino Royale has been announced for March not February, 13th March in the US and the 19th in the UK (day and date with the DVD).

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

The WB, don't get things twisted!!!

If you read my comments you would know I'm actaully very impressed with my Toshiba HD A1!!! My argument isn't with TOSHIBA!!! they are simply making the product to PLAY the HD DVD's.

I'm just very concerned that as the comments above, HD DVD's have taken their foot off the pedal so to speak!

As for a a PS3 being a Games machine, well i havent owned a games machine since the days of the original playstation so i wouldn't say i'm a real gamer! I would however say that the PS3 is an 'attractive' option of havin a 'cheaper' blu ray player that can also double up as a pretty good games machine too!

I havent made any final decisions yet but just wish more HD DVD's were being released at then this topic wouldn't have even been created!

Made a list of 'wants' last night for the next few months, 14 HD DVD and 13 BD. Some were out, some due shortly.

See? This is EXACTLY why I don't go jumping on the "new format" band wagon! I wait a good long while untill one or the other has become the staple norm for movie media, and THEN buy into it - after it has proved itself, become the "winner" or whatever, and come down in price

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

Hi Nic,

out of interest out of all the 'wants' list, how many brand new released films do you have on each list i.e films that are being released straight on the new formats (like Fly Boys & The Guardian both new to Blu Ray)

I only ask as it's the new HD films i'm interested in rather than old films just gettin the HD treatment.

Pity - because you are missing out on some amazing discs... You can spend your whole life waiting - and in the end all you achieve is missing out and hearing how others are enjoying themselves. Applies in just about every facet of life IMHO.

As to the OP - as I have constantly suggest to members on the board you should buy into both formats. BluRay have announced their releases upto June and there are some nice titles there. HD DVD are announcing piecemeal but I bet come June we will all look back and see there were a number of releases on both formats that we would buy. If you switch from one to the other now you will only miss out on different titles...

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

For anyone who has followed the format for any length of time should know now that releases come very quick from annoucements. Unlike some of the br annoucements which are months away alot of the hddvds are out a mere few weeks from annoucemtn.

I actually only own 1 SACD disc, and that disc is the only reason I bought a DVD player with SACD compatibility! The Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon SACD....

But, I bought that YEARS after SACD come on the market, so I haven't REALLY bought into that format as such. I wanted a new DVD player, and thought I'd buy one that could also play SACD's to I could listen to DSoTM in full surround

Plus, I don't even own a CD player It's either a CD in the DVD player, or MP3 from the PC

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

This is pretty straight forward.

By into both HD and BR, getting a nice collection together before dual players are released.

I can say with alot of confidence that 12 months down the line you will have the choice of maybe 3 dual machines and you will already have all the discs you want.

I have said before on the forums that i cannot see there being an eventual winner or loser just coexistance for all our benefit.

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

Personally I think it sucks that there are even 2 formats! But I think there will be a winner and a loser. No idea which one will be which but I'm hoping HD-DVD wins seeing as I've bought into it. (360 4tw)

So far the only Blu-ray only title I want is The Crow, and I presume the Aliens/Predator saga will be Blu-ray

I Nearly agree but I wouldnt own a dual format player .i will buy a bd player when they come down to a reasonable price and have the two machines, dual format players are like putting all your eggs in one basket if on side stops working so does the other. Mike

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

i saw SWAT (bluray) in John lewis's on a 50" pio. And it was terrible.
I hope thats just down to the mpeg2 instead of VC1.
In the end i'm on HD-DVD side.
There release's aren't as big as as blu ray but i prefere quality to quantaty.

Here is a link to the French releases, http://www.dvdrama.com/fichesearch7....hd-dvd&x=0&y=0

Also add to that Running Scared from Germany, and some Blu Ray exclusive titles from Japan (things like XXX, Reign Of Fire, Finding Neverland) and thats pretty much all the non-US HD-DVD titles.

AVC is here and guess what Sony's first film using this codec gets 5/5!

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

I don't have either HD-DVD or BD (yet!). Initially when the specs for each format was announced I thought BD would be the better. But then HD-DVD had a great launch. Now BD has pulled back a lot of ground and looks to be moving ahead. Its very difficult to decide which way to go (I think that anyone who advocates the "buy both" appoach is just prolonging the format war).

At the moment I am seriously thinking of saving my pennies for a PS3 sometime in the Summer. The only thing I am not sure about is the BD region coding. Would a US/Jap PS3 be better than the Euro?

BD is region coded so whicever you decide on be sure about it.

Re: What on earth is going on with HD DVD's????

I too like everyone else thought HD-DVD was gonna win prices of hd-dvds and players compared to br-dvd and br-players.

But come 2007, everything has changed, and I havent got a clue which format is gonna win.

But I'm patient I don't mind waiting until the war is over.

Well if its any help I feel the same and AM going HD DVD.

Barrier to entry in terms of Price right now is less.

I have a 360 (prefer the system and games to PS3) and £130 for the HD DVD Drive isn't really a big deal.

If I'm going to get a next gen movie format thenI obviously have to have movies, and I refuse to do without Universals library. I can live without FOX and Sony and Disney for a while.

Once the war is decided and dual format players are ubiquitous and cheap I'll have a catalogue of titles of either the winner or loser and will only have lost out on £130.
