Old Titles HD DVD

Well what can I say.. Its amazing that these film houses remaster old titles, The first film that I saw on HD that has been remastered was 'Grand Prix'

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/grandprix.html

.. Outstanding as a F1 I loved it.. and today I watched 1938 'The adventures of Robin Hood' with 'Errol Flynn'.

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/adven...nhood1938.html

What do you think about viewing old titles in HD

Re: Old Titles HD DVD

Given that the age of the movie has no bearing on it's quality as a movie then I'm all for remastering them for the HD age which of course benefits DVD as well as broadcast television.

Yeah.. I've heard if they've still got the 35mm film, that's more than enough for a 1080p transfer ..

35mm has much more resolution than what is needed for 1080. The only thing that will show old films as poor is things like scratches and other print damage. Therefore, any remastering should be done when possible.

Re: Old Titles HD DVD

It's a Wonderful Life
The Night of the Hunter
North by Northwest
The Great Escape

Not a film, but would love to see "The Prisoner" TV series in HD to better appreciate the fantastic location.

I also second The Godfather Trilogy and Le Mans

EDIT: Just want to thank the OP for bringing Grand Prix to my attention. I've never seen this film before but read the review in the link and have just ordered it! Motorsport has been a life-long passion of mine and I can't wait to watch this...

Re: Old Titles HD DVD

I am a big fan of these 'oldies' and many of my wants have been mentioned before. Add to that Ben Hur (both versions), Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Physco, Citizen Kane, 12 Angry Men, Rear Window, The African Queen and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for starters.

These oldies actually get money out of me quicker than the Holywood blockbusters.

Re: Old Titles HD DVD

The Adventures of Robin Hood looks absolutely fantastic in HD

So does Forbidden Planet.

There a loads of old films I'd love to see in HD, all Hitchcock's films would do me for starters.

Hear, hear. I bought all the oldies/classics (Casablanca, The Sting etc.) immediately whereas quite a few of the "modern" flicks that I have on my wishlist are still there waiting to be purchased some day.

Thanks to super-quick delivery form MT I watched this last night - really enjoyed it. PQ was unbelievable for a film that old - and the soundtrack was fantastic, especially the way it captured the growls from those 3 litre engines. A lot of time was obviously spent transferring and restoring this - they even managed to remix the sound to get some from the rears. Some cracking extras delving into the history of the sport too.

Must confess that the "Overture" bit at the start had me going... I had just skipped past the HD-DVD trailer/demo thing and thought I'd pressed the wrong button for a moment until I brought up the scene access menu and realised it was part of the film!

Re: Old Titles HD DVD

Chinatown needs a cleanup. I read a few weeks ago that Paramount were using the Warner restoration process (used for Robin Hood etc) on Chinatown, but not sure if its true or not.

Chinatown is the best film ever made!

Re: Old Titles HD DVD

I'd love to see the restored version of Singin in the Rain (some of those old Technicolor** films look superb). Mind you the SDVD version takes some beating for PQ, it's better than a lot of the newer stuff.

I'm a big musical fan, so anything from this genre (in it's hey day) will do for me

Not a musical but looking forward to seeing Casablanca in HD-DVD. Still on my shelf, but may give it a viewing tonight

** Any body catch that excellent, informative doc on Technicolor the other night?
It was on BBC4 on 'The Cinema Show'. Well worth a watch

Mr D would like it for sure, though he may not like some of the comments by some of the 'old school' cinematographers .

Yes - the SD DVD of Singin' In The Rain is quite spectacular. Lost count of how many jaws I've made drop with that one. Also quite a few have asked if they are watchiing a Hi-Def disc.

Not as old as some that you have mentioned, but I really think Top Gun would be awesome in HD.
