Help! How to open a HD DVD Case!

Can't believe I have to ask this, and the fact that I do makes me believe that I may have a faulty case but:-
I've just bought my first HD DVD from ASDA and I can't even open the case! There is a block of plastic on the side, looks like a button (maybe) but no matter what I do, press, pull, etc I cant get the case to open. Is it faulty or am I stupid?!

Sounds like you shoplifted it lol! Did the lady take the security cover off it?

It was just cellophane wrapped. The red button is the same colour as the red case, in the middle of the right side of the case. Looks like its supposed to be there.

Yep. Had about 10 titles. MI:III, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, Jarhead, Harry Potter, Serenity, V for vendetta etc...

Pull it down as this is a locking mechanism then open as you would any normal amaray case. Oh and enjoy the movie

Never thought Asda would sell HD-DVDs before the likes of Sainsburys or Tescos...! Or maybe they're already in at other supermarkets too?

oh crap. I know what it is. ADSA should have removed the TAG at the checkout. No I have to ruin my first box to watch the movie.

As part of a sensible, holistic approach to security, Red Tag is an extremely effective way of not only reducing theft but also increasing sales.
Put yourself in the shoes of someone wanting to buy DVDs.
In store, you walk past the sign telling you the policy on prosecuting thieves. Then, studied by the CCTV camera, you begin to browse.
The first DVD you pick up looks great. You can just read the sleeve notes if you squint through the grubby plastic safer or try to guess what the words are underneath the security-sticker.
Then you see another that takes your fancy. This time the box is empty. The DVD itself is behind the counter. You can queue for it later.
Your next choice is very exciting. All you need to do is ask the security guard to get the keys to the glass case it's locked inside.
Do you feel the urge to buy disappearing?
The big news is there's a new kind of DVD case that removes all these barriers to sales without compromising security.
It looks like the Amaray case you're using now but it features a slot into which a remarkable device is pushed - Red Tag.
Red Tag locks the DVD in place, houses your security tag and clamps the box tightly shut. But that's not all.
In trials, it increased sales by between 50% and 200%. Why? Because it encourages impulse buying, increases back catalogue sales and allows more product - and a greater range - to be displayed. Why Red Tag?

Rates of theft in film and music retailing are alarmingly and unacceptably high.
Anti-theft counter measures have created barriers to sales, slashing sales volumes and retailer profits.
They involve repackaging product, reduce shelf space and increase labour costs.
Designing a retailing environment with thieves in mind actually creates a culture that puts people off buying.

What is Red Tag?

A simple but strong red plastic security tag that is inserted into the new Amaray box design.
Comes in all main security formats - AM, RF and EM.
Slides under the disc hub, locking the product in place. *Clamps the box tightly shut so the box cannot be opened unless excessive force is applied.
When excessive force is applied, box is deliberately designed to break with a loud cracking sound.
Product may fracture. Box ruined. Black market value destroyed. Otherwise known as 'benefit denial'.

I know thats the correct way to deal with it, but I've never watched a HD DVD, I bought this one tonight to watch. I cant wait any longer. There is no way I'm going all the way back to the store tonight. So think I wil break it open and then take it back and ask them to change the case. Should prove my point. After all, they can't expect the customer to know about this tag, its very discrete, they need to tell you and take it off, I should not be able to leave the store with it on.

I had to take a film back to HMV once, I would not attempt opening it as it seemed a right mother to open, you wouldn't want to shatter your first HD_DVD film woudl you?

Who's to say you didn't buy one and steal one. Best to take it back and say you can't get into it, when burly chaps begin to crowd you scream FIRE! and run.

I had one from hmv once too. Spent a whole hour one evening trying to open the B****r to no avail. Gave it back the next day to hmv bent, torn & buckled and they casually swopped it for a new one.

I split a DVD just by pressing the button in the middle of the disc. Can't they come up with a better way?

Well, too late to change my mind now. Got fustrated and snapped it open. Case shattered into a few pieces but the disk is unharmed. Popped MI:III into my player and am enjoying the results.

I agree that taking it back to take the tag off may be what ASDA would like, but shops never take into account you're own time and expenses. Why should I spend an hour of my time and £10 on petrol because of their error. I want the disc for £19, not £19 plus £10.

Anyway, I suppose its something that will only ever happen to you once, i'll know better next time. The annoying thing was I actually took it to the DVD counter to pay for it and they told me to go to the usual check outs!

I had exactly the same puzzle when trying to open my first HD DVD case a few days ago. What you experienced was HD DVD's normal packaging, not the red security tag used on DVD that some on the thread seem to think it is.

I scratched my head for a few minutes as it seemed as if the "button" should be pushed in to open the case. It turns out it's a small flap that pulls down and then releases the two halves of the case so it can be opened.

No use in taking the case back to ASDA I'm afraid.

I just had a close encounter of the red kind with some games from Virgin. Cracked the first case and scratched the disc slightly. Took it back to the store next day to get it completely replaced and tags removed from my other purchases.

Trying to get through it is not pleasant.

I hate the damn red tags which retailers seem to love to forget to remove.

You just need a couple of magnets...

Once you've taken one apart (I too got stuck with one on a SD DVD) you can see how simple it is to remove them... providing you have a couple of strong preferably electro magnets in your pocket.

It sound like they are having to replace more broken cases than just letting them get stolen in the first place.

i think its only the u.k versions that have this ... i have 28 u.s films that never had this.

the only 2 u.k films i have are potter4 (warner) & kong (universal) ... and only kong had a security tab

... which i ended up cutting off with a pair of scissors ... i worked the scissors in at the bottom of the tab and snipped it

with absolutely no damage to the case.

edit: both films were ordered from hmv online, but potter4 had an american style case

so if you really cant be bothered to send or return it back, this should work for you, just make sure the blades are sharp and not too big that you end up bending the case as you work them in

This would seem to be another of those stupid things that we all end up paying for, (they cost to implement)

If you are the sort of person who regularly shop-lifts then it would seem from the above posts that you can open up the case without too much hassle, and if you break a few discs in the meantime, you didn't pay for them so no big deal.

If, however, you bought them legally and the shop forgot to take them off, then they have effectively sold you something which is 'unfit for purpose' and are obliged to replace, and could be sued for any extra expenses you incurred in getting it replaced.

It's just another defence mechanism which seems to irritate the legitimate buyer more than the thief

I wouldn't get that worked up about it...

I've had one after buying hundreds of discs.... I've also once before they changed to this system had the wrong movie put in the case when I took the empty case to the counter... of course I didn't check until I got home..

Now I simply check the cases myself to see if there is a tag that hasn't been removed or if there isn't that the right movie is inside...

I've walked into clothes shops before and set off the alarms... the security guard was very nice though, and once he realised the tags were on items purchased next door, he simply removed them for us, and explained they forget to take them off all the time...

Can somebody post a pick of this, i have a ton of us hddvds that have the clip on them its easy you just put your nail to the top middle and pull out it pops open. People cant be having trouble with this little clip can they.

I think that there is some confusion between the little clip that is an integral part of some cases which just needs to be pulled open and the security tab device which I believe the OP is talking about which needs to be removed in store.

hmmm that is weird .. where did you order them from ? all my U.S versions are from movietyme & all my U.K versions from hmv (online)

the last 2 u.s films recieved were casino & mummy returns and neither had it on

though they do have the catch on the inner spine, but NOT the security tab
