DVD that 'forgets' it is in widescreen (Armando Iannucci)

I thought dvd had no surprises left for me. . .

I recently bought The Armando Iannucci Shows on dvd and immediately put them on my server using makemkv.

When watching via a Popbox the picture is 4:3 and vertically squashed. This has never happened before so I checked the file with vlc and it was the same.

I checked the disc with my BD player and it plays 16:9 until I press pause or fwd and then it forgets that it should be 16:9 and reverts to 4:3 (squashed). As the BD player and Popbox output at 1080i, I cannot change the settings on the TV to compensate.

It's as if the 16:9 flag is not on permanently.

Has anyone come across this before?

I can't say I've seen any issues like that on any commerical discs I've watched before.

It could be that the correct display format hasn't been set properly in the DVD's ifo files. You can use IfoEdit to check and correct those if necessary, per the guide here:

Using IfoEdit: Setting the 16:9 Flag

If you load up the MKV files in mkvmerge GUI, I'm sure you can also set the aspect ratio or display format from one of the tabs.

IfoEdit will overwrite the DVD files on your hard drive when you execute the changes. mkv merge however will create a whole new file.

Thanks for the info; I tried ifoEdit (it looked simpler) but the IFOs all looked ok.

mkvmerge seems to have done the trick though! vlc looks correct - I make sure the Popbox works when I get home.

EDIT: Worked like a charm - Cheers
