If it's the same old hoary "special features" as on the DVD and the same master as the UK blu I'll pass, unless the steelbook has AMAZING art.

Question

Hi,

Don't mean to be rude here, but are we sure this is going to be some kind of new, longer, or alternate version?

The reason I ask this, is that the BBFC recently released long details about the classification of TOTAL RECALL, and at no point in time has the film been cut or censored by them, nor has any version submitted to them, ever been submitted in a version different to the one seen in the USA.

Several of the BBFC examiners, thought that TOTAL RECALL might be possible to be granted an uncut 15 certificate! However, it was eventually classified with an uncut 18 certificate, in 1990, with a running time of 112 minutes, and it was then classified a short while later for VHS and DVD, with a running time of around 108 minutes (both figures, listed at the PAL speedup rate). See the BBFC files here, or just download the PDF Censor Document here instead.

Hence, I am confused, when people are claiming that the Steelbook is some kind of new "uncut" version...

... Unless people are referring to the fact that the film was cut for the MPAA in the USA, where it was originally given an X-rating, and the following scenes were trimmed to receive an R:
Quote:
- Benny's death is optically cropped to remove the exiting drill erupting from his stomach.

- The innocent bystander used as a shield was bloodier before trimming.

- The stabbing of Helm in the bar had the bowie knife slicing up his stomach. Stills of this were actually featured in Fangoria magazine at the time of the film's release.

- Several shots of the scientists being killed by Quaid after he breaks free from the implant-machine were shortened.

- The scene of Richter's arms being severed was shortened
Thus, the R-rated version is the same one we got here in the UK.

No other version has been submitted to the MPAA nor the BBFC of this "new, uncut version", in recent weeks, and I can't find any details to say that this new version, has even been released or approved by Paul Verhoeven himself.

So, is anyone willing to share news on whether this is simply just a re-release of the version we all know and love, or if it is genuinely the original, uncut, X-rated version, with the cut material I've mentioned above, reinstated?

I'm thinking this is just the standard blu-ray packaged with a dvd and digital copy. Just being re-released to co-inside with the new movie.

Am I right in thinking that dvdcompare don't actually compare pq just the features and sound? Because I thought I'd seen somewhere on here that the UK disc has better pq than the current US disc, and this new release addresses that disparity.

I'd just be happy to have the Arnie commentary on the disc.

Oh! 7.1 sound would be nice too.

Eh?

This new release is a UK release though. So there is no disparity to address? I imagine it will be the same transfer etc as on the current barebones UK disc.

And, yes, Ive read that the current UK disc PQ is better than the current US disc too.

Nah, it'll be the same as the newer Australian/Euro releases. The one that people were whining about having more DNR, when it's the same master as the previous UK BD/HD DVD, but with better compression. People were confusing compression noise with grain.

What I mean is presumably its a simultaneous release with the states so it's addressing the disparity at their end.

In the end I guess I just want to know when this one is released which will be the best version pq wise.

Well the US version on July 31st (Mind Bending Edition) has the following....

While Lionsgate has yet to detail the technical specifications for the Mind-Bending Edition, the Blu-ray boasts a new, director-supervised transfer - taken from the original negative - as well as supplementary materials that include:

Total Recall: Mind-Bending Blu-ray Edition

So would it be safe to say the UK version will be getting the new transfer too?

Hmmm sounding more interesting. If its a new transfer and they havent done a Predator on it I will definitely be after this. The existing UK blu transfer isnt bad by any means but an improvement will be welcome. Plus some extras would be nice, especially the commentary!

I used to have the UK steelbook DVD of this - that got sold ages ago of course.

This has just gone up for pre-order @ amazon.com and works out at just over £10 delivered (Might be different when it actually ships pending on the exchange rate).

That is tempting as I haven't Total Recall other than on laserdisc.

Yup I shall be waiting until its absolutely clear that the lionsgate transfer is better than the uk release before dispensing with it.

Guess this confirms for certain that it's a new transfer from the original negative.

DTS MA 5.1 sound. Shame really it's not 7.1 being a lionsgate release.

I am tempted to risk the US version. I won't be paying what the UK version goes for. What are the chances of it being region locked?

The 5.1 mix doesn't rock the joint, so 7.1 would be complete and utter overkill.

Ordered the UK steelbook, if it's the exact same encode as the current UK version + extras I'll be happy enough.

Exclamation

Hi,

Not all Lionsgate releases are Region Locked to Region A. The recent RAMBO IV / JOHN RAMBO: DIRECTOR'S CUT disc was Region Free, so it maybe worth hangin on, just in case.
