Super8 & Ghost protocol audio problems(both Paramount release)

I have stumbled upon a strange problem lately with a couple of new Paramount release ie, Super 8 and Ghost Protocol. The problem is when playing back the TrueHD soundtrack they become unwatchable because the audio is continually breaking up. This happened with my copy of Super 8 a couple of weeks ago and I just let it pass thinking it was just a one off thing(and it isnt my setup becuase I ripped both films and tried playback via my XBMC setup and problem still exists which means it isnt my Bluray player and other films that I have that are encoded with True HD still play fine), but after last night trying to watch Ghost Protocol the same problem accured. It seems too much of a coincidence to me that the last 2 movies released on Blu by Paramount are showing this issue Was wondering if anyone else out there has also got this problem. I also thought it a little strange that Paramount would choose to release these films with a TrueHD soundtrack and not MasterHD as most BIG releases are these days

Ok! Firstly both sound tracks are 7.1 sound. Have you got any 7.1 tracks that play ok?
I haven't noticed any of the issues you are experiencing.

And lastly I prefer Dolby TrueHD to DTS MA. My favourite soundtracks all seem to be Dolby TrueHD ones and Transformers 3 just beats MI3 to the demo disc I use. For me anyway.

The thing I have sometimes with Paramount blu-rays is they kick in 'Night Listening' mode on my Onkyo amp, always check that is off whenever I start a film from them, it doesn't break up the sound, just makes it quieter.

I've never noticed this. Can you give me a disc title that this definitely happens with so I can try it out?

Hmmm, you could have stumbled upon something there. I have a few 7.1 MASTER HD tracks that play fine but, I cant seem to find any other 7.1 True HD masterd discs. Could you name drop a few and if I have one in my collection I will give it a try. BTW my amp is a Pioneer VSX LX-70. I have got them both playing back fine with normal AC3 soundtrack.

Transformers 3 and A Nightmare Before Christmas Springs to mind.

War has a 7.1 PCM soundtrack it'll be interesting to see if that skips.

Didn't have any issue with either of those titles on my setup, perhaps its a firmware issue?

I didn't notice a problem on my 806 with Ghost Protocol, but I have the player set to decode and pass PCM to the amp, at which point it doesn't matter whether the disc is TrueHD, PCM or HDMA.

Ok so I downloaded a few 1080p TrueHD 7.1 tests from High Definition Trailers (HD) - Demo World and they ALL played perfectly so this tells me that it is not a 7.1 issue

Ive downloaded loads of DTS/DOLBY trailers (in lossy 5.1) from that site & I'm still trying to work out how to burn them to a DVD to watch on my blu-ray player on my main setup.

Anyone else done this & care to share how they did it?

What blu-ray player have you got?
Try a different HDMI lead.

Super 8 & VSX-LX 70 - same problem

I tried watching Super 8 last night on my Pioneer Blu-ray player and via my Pioneer VSX-LX 7- amp and it was unwatchable because of this 7.1 audio problem.

Seems too much of a coincidence that the two of us experiencing the problem should have the same amp!

No amp updates available from Pioneer though, so unless it's a setting somewhere, were stuck!

Did you find a solution?

Conan the Barbarian (2011) has a 7.1 soundtrack and very loud it is too!

No problems with me (I dont have 7.1 though, only 5.1). The back speakers did seem more busy than normal. I thought the soundtrack was either reference or close to it, definitely one of the best Ive heard.

Had the same issue (audio broke up badly whenever things got loud) when watching Ghost Protocol through my Onkyo 606, using a Tevion multi-region BD player. I'm guessing it is a firmware issue, but the Tevion hasn't had a firmware update since release.

Could you try switching the Blu-ray audio output to PCM instead of Bitstream and see if that solves the problem?
