Watched 2 of Redemption's new releases, Virgin Witch and Killer's Moon. Two charming 70's British offerings, Both looked pretty good considering their budget and vintage. Pretty tame by today's standards but worth a look if you're curious

Watched [The Awakening] as well and it had the same effect on me, no atmosphere at all even the actors looked bored to death,I'd say definately one to avoid especially to horror/ghost fans.

People shouldn't 'avoid' this movie just because it didn't tick all your boxes. It's a solid story and a competent thriller- just not the best example in the genre. Personally I thought it would have made a better TV drama than a movie- but it was far from awful.

I'm not sure why people should bother posting mini-reviews of horror films anymore. It just ends up as an invitation for people to proclaim how 'bored' (i.e. not scared) they were.

I enjoyed the awakening. Nothing special but worked ok for me.

The innocents still scares me as much every time I watch it, not sure the awakening or the others will

Last episode of "This is England 88" on Blu for me last night. Absolutely stunning series - a rare case of a great film being made by the same writer/director and cast into even better TV mini-series.

Really hope there is more to come (anybody know?) Astonishing to hear the lengths the writer/director went to (separating actors who needed to confront each other for whole shoot, surprising main actor with other actors appearing unheralded whilst shooting to create a fight scene all filmed in one take etc). Powerful emotional stuff. Really impressed. If you missed this on TV over Christmas you owe it to yourself to rent it out.

I believe a 90 one was announced. In fact, I think this was the initial plan with the 88 being a bit of a bonus. Haven't seen it yet but am looking forward to Lovefilm sending it my way.

Terence Davies The Deep Blue Sea for me tonight.

This had rave reviews from the critics, but I came away rather disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much given the critics' love but I think the imdb average score of 6.1 is far closer to the reality. I loved the director's previous drama House of Mirth so had high expectations but this was too dark, slow and over-wrought for my tastes. The music over the first 10 minutes just seemed cliched and pretentious. For me it jarred, possibly because Barber's music is too familiar to me. Essentially this felt like a stage play rather than a film - a 20 minute one stretched out to 100 minutes, despite some imaginative shooting and some wonderfully framed "coffee table artistic photograph" shots.

Maybe I'll appreciate it more on a second viewing when more time has passed - certainly Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston do a fine job as the leads, but it feels like a film I've seen many times before ("The End of Days" anyone?)

From a Blu-ray perspective the title is also disappointing. The picture is extremely soft and often very grainy. It looks like it was shot through a piece of muslin. I'm sure someone will be along to say this was the director's "artistic vision", but it was just irritating when so many titles that would benefit from an HD release don't get it and this really didn't need an HD release.

Last night it was The Thing 2011 for me with some trepidation as I love Carpenters 1982 remake, but here goes.

Easy part first picture and sound couldn't fault it but I would expect that from newer films.

Now I've always wanted to see what went on at the Norwegian base and when hearing this was being made was very keen.

Went in with an open mind even after the mixed reviews just hoping it would add light to the 1982 classic. Problem is this film doesn't know what it wants to be prequel, sequel or remake ? It try's so hard to please being all three that it manages to be neither .

It has good points as in the look of the film does feel the same but not the feel . You just don't feel for any of the characters and you don't get the same feeling of mistrust and tension which made the 1982 version work so well.

The CGI is over used and not great, where's all the pus and sinue that made me squirm ? All in all this doesn't bring anything new and that's where it fails I'm afraid.

Thor this evening. Very good BD and I liked it a lot more with this second viewing. Originally saw it at the cinema and thought it was decent but it seems to have grown on me a bit more. Not sure why as the performances were fairly poor, I thought. Only really rated Stellen Skarsgard and Loki of those characters that had much to do. Always good to see Idris Elba, even in a small role.

Just finished watching the 1933 original King Kong and it was fantastic, even better than i remembered. I especially liked Peter Jackson's re-imagining of the up to now lost Spider Pit sequence, you could tell this was a labour of love for him and all those involved.
I can't recommend this film more highly.

Is this supposed to be ironic ? Peter Jackson was born in 1961 so would have found it quite difficult to be involved in a movie which was released in 1933.

Why would he find it so difficult? He'll almost certainly seen it on TV or maybe even in a cinema on a re-release. I saw it on TV as a kid as well as the likes of Laurel And Hardy, Buster Keaton and Will Hay. The age of these productions didn't put me off.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. Far better than most films released under the banner of romantic comedy, this is smart, genuinely funny and sweet without being cloying. Everybody is great in it but Emma Stone steals the film for me. I've liked her in other films, but this convinced me that she may just be the best actress currently working in comedy. She also has great chemistry with Ryan Gosling, who is also excellent as a smooth ladies man.

For me this is probably the best film in its genre since (500) Days of Summer. Maybe its two debits were that like so many films these days it runs on slightly too long and the supporting characters and side plots were slightly more compelling than the central one between Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore.

This was inlcuded as one of the extras contained on the disc and he is also an expert on the film, he has in his collection some of the original scripts and some very rare pictures of the lost footage so was able to create how this might look, so you have lost me as to your train of thought.

Tell you what though Bri if this footage by mister Jackson was inserted (which it never should be unless they find the original) into the film it was so well done it would be hard to notice.

They do seem to think it still exists some where so you never know.

Tonight's film : Chinatown

This will be the first time I've watched it, I saw some of it as a kid and it didn't really grab me, but I've got a few years under the belt now and as a big noir fan it's time to give it a proper watch. Plus I also like the handful of Polanski's other films that I have seen.

I like watching older classics (by all accounts) for the first time that I've missed, well mastered and projected in HD, when I can think to myself this is what Blu ray is all about.

Hopefully tonight will be one of those times.

My first reaction was "how I wished I could see this for the first time again" and then I remembered that like Vertigo and Citizen Kane, this is a film that gets better with every viewing. In any case, hopefully you should be in for a treat. Enjoy !

Hall Pass (Sky+ HD)

Been wanting to watch this for a while but been putting it off as i thought it would be another throw away comedy. Its never been the right price on Blu-ray and its not a film you really need to see in HD imho. It popped up for £3 on DVD in Tesco but still it didnt feel like the right time. Anyway a week later its popped up on Sky

I'm not a big Owen Wilson fan but never the less i really enjoyed this. Yes it predictable but funny, crude, its mindless, switch off, chill out entertainment. It reminds me of Superbad, Observe And Report, The Hangover etc. I watched it late last night then deleted it off the Sky box and regretted it so I've recorded it again tonight. I wouldn't have been disappointed if id paid £3 on DVD but i wouldn't pay more than a fiver for it on BD.

Hellboy last night. £5 and quite a bargain. Excellent BD and a really solid film. Ron Perlman is just about perfect for the role.
