Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol tonight. Absolutely superb. Completely blown away. Excellent blend of action and humour. Best of the series so far. One of the best movies i've seen in my theatre in a long time. The bass moments are absolutely awesome too.
9.9/10 !

I made a heroic attempt at watching The Phantom Menace after only having seen it once when it came out. I'll give it another chance, I thought. Maybe its not as bad as I remember.

Somehow the film is even worse now then it was then. It's thoroughly inept on almost every level. Its CGI has dated really badly. I remember the film at least looking quite sumptuous at the time. Now it looks cheap as well and doesn't even work as eye candy anymore. Many of the sets are not very detailed and the whole film just looks tacky. I gave up when Anakin's (worst child actor ever!) mother trys to explain about his virgin birth. That scene just made me feel embarassed for the actress whose performance was worthy of an Ed Wood film. Also the film looks flat and waxy, like it has been DNR'd to death, though I'm sure it wasn't. That's how it probably came out of the Lucas sausage machine.

Haha, yeah I've taken off my apologist goggles and the thing does look bloody awful. Worst element of the film? Anakin as played by Jake Lloyd. Fortunately Lucas learned his lesson and hired Hayden Christensen for the following two.

Demons this evening. The steelbook was a blind buy (when the price was low) but I'm happy to have it. Good fun and a pleasing BD. Lots of murky bits so a surprisingly good picture and decent sound to boot.

Come on, phantom menace isn't that bad.

Ok it is :-)

The animated clone wars series is pretty damn good though.

I'm very happy with it but haven't seen it on any other format for comparison. Apparently Demons 2 isn't as good (as expected) but I doubt I'll get a chance to find out for myself until next week. Sound is 2.0 LPCM mono in English or Italian. Only tried the English but it was very effective, I thought.

Should point out that my system is less demanding than many other forum members. Have a 32" screen and hooked up via phono to a Denon micro stereo. Bigger and fancier systems might better reveal shortcomings.

Happy to oblige!

The steelbook is also much nicer in real life than it may appear in pictures. Didn't think much of the artwork before it arrived but it has grown on me and the logo looks nice in gold. I now consider it to be 'a nice package'

Last night my viewing was....

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) Blu-ray steelbook

Outstanding-This was a blind buy for me and i was in no way disappointed, i was hooked from start to finish. There are multiple stories in this film which i all found gripping, along with the acting particularly Rooney Mara. I thought her and the character she played were equally fascinating. A couple of scenes were a tad uncomfortable viewing, but i think they got the balance right in order to explain parts of the story. I also thought the picture quality was excellent.

I also have the first two originals, which i have yet to watch. But now I'm spurred to view them and purchase the third film.

FQ: 9.5/10
PQ: 9/10

From most reviewers ive read, the originals are even better than the hollywood remakes, so you have done it the right way round.

Im quite interested in seeing DC as the journo, but when it was a choice between the steey of this and the extended trilogy of all three films I just had to choose the latter. Will hopefully watch all three by the end of the bank holiday (I really loved theatrical release of original Tattoo)

Hard Boiled Sweets

Total blind buy for me, and a small Brit crime flick - so was quietly hopeful.

No particularly famous actors in it, not a particularly original film either,, intentionally / dry humour in parts ........but it was still really good fun to watch. The ending was......painful .....to watch also but highly amuzing with it. Its definitely a keeper, although it probably wont be watched a great deal.

Entertainment value 9/10
Movie 7/10
Picture 8/10
Audio 7/10

There are one or two scenes that are actually pretty good- the wide shots of Theed and Coruscant for example. But others are dire. One of the worst ones is early on when the landing ships are coming down and the spaceships in the background are blurred out of existence. Its a dead giveaway since objects dont tend to blur in space.

It's not an easy movie to defend I must admit, but it does have its saving graces.

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. Echo what others have said about the film, which is fantastic and full on enjoyment. As for the AV - WOW

Film - 8/10
PQ - 10/10 - stunning clarity and the whole PQ was just a joy to watch. Truly exceptional
SQ - 10/10 - again, stunning. Neighbours were out and it was crancked up. Blew me away.

This one is a keeper

I ordered Face/Off a couple of days ago. Is the bass from the explosions as good as I remember? I loved this film when it came out. It's no Hard Boiled but still one of my fav John Woo films.

That's been given a thick coating of DNR which ruins the PQ, surprised to see it get PQ 8/10.

I wasn't aware of DNR so much but when I think about it the PQ is really about 7/10 if that.

The sound is fine & bass but like you Miike I was a fan but now its like............'ok' its over, good.

I'm starting to wonder if it's going to be £7 well spent now

Only if you're scoring it out of a possible 20.

The girl who played with fire.

Enjoyed this, looking forward to the third.
I'm viewing from a different angle, I watched the American tattoo version to begin with. Really liked it, so carrying on with the originals and will prob watch the original tattoo in a few months.

I can see why people are annoyed as there doesn't seem to be any point remaking (accept for lazy sub readers), but the fact is they have been.

Comparing, it's like film v excellent tv drama.
Now I'm not having a go at the originals, but with the $$ thrown at it and Fincher behind the camera, the American version does look slicker and more film like. I also think Mara did and excellent job. I can understand those who have watched the originals and now watch the remake with distaste, Rapace is great bit it does have a tv look about it (and that's not a bad thing).

Maybe after watching the third and original ill be won over, but for me Finchers gives more of the cinematic experience, and it is that I seek.
I'm not saying it should have been made, but it has as will the others I assume.

I realise I can't really compare the original second to the American first, I am assuming the film style/acting carries on in a similar way from the first.

Anyway, enjoyed and looking forward to the next.

FQ 7.5
PQ 7
AQ 7

Hugo

I almost feel guilty for not enjoying this more. It’s a tender, earnest and gentle movie full of tender, earnest and gentle characters, and it looks sumptuous. But it just didn’t engage me at all on first viewing. It ambles from scene to scene without really going anywhere; two thirds of the way in, the characters seem no further into the story than when they started. I also found the acting a little flat, which is odd as they are all good actors. I’d like to give it another chance, but I’m not in a big hurry.

Picture is probably the best I’ve ever seen: utterly impressive. It's warm, vibrant, colours pop out, blacks are like Indian ink, metals gleam, little details sing, and faces are detailed. The few exterior shots are also stunning. It's so impressive in fact that I was more focused on that than the story itself. Sound is equally flawless, although it’s a fairly quiet film. Sound effects are steered around with perfect precision and there is some good use made of rear speakers.

Movie: 6.5
PQ: 10
AQ: 9

In Time

MQ: Dross - 3/10. Great premise and it's hard to pinpoint exactly why I feel it was so poor. Most of the acting apart from Cillian Murphy was awful and the action was quite flat
FQ: 7/10. It looks like it had money spent on (the film), but the images were not particularly dazzling
SQ: 6/10. Nothing major and the clock noise was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overused.
