I love all three Not sure I could watch The Road again in the near future as so very depressing, but I enjoyed Book of Eli. I have no idea of the general consensus on this one, but I would happily watch it again

Not seen Mad Max 2 for yeeeears, but it's my favourite of the trilogy. Talk about mix n match - I have the first one on HD-DVD, the second on Blu and the third on DVD

Lame lame lame.
Are you a sadist ? Or just a hopeless action movie-junkie ?

If a movie doesn't hold my attention in the first half hour its on borrowed time. By 45 mins its ejected. Only regret having walked out of one film, Talented Mr Ripley, which was remedied on DVD release.

Or, Pig-nose & Eyebrows as I call it.

I attempted to watch it last night. Utter drivel.
That Taylor kid seems nice enough, but sweet Jesus if he has the screen presence of a dry postage stamp. His nose threatens to take over every scene and when him and Lily Collins are together,(which is quite a lot), I feared that the very fabric of our universe would rip in half. Thank God it wasn't in 3D.

You noticed the eyebrows too. But she also reminded me of that gorgeous Dr Who assistant (forget her name) so for me it was a genuine dilemma.

Certainly agree about cro-magnon boy though.

Priest via Lovefilm tonight. Could have been much better. A missed opportunity. Very good picture and sound, though.

Agreed. Loved the look and feel of the movie (and Maggie Q )...but the script and the actual delivery felt like a wasted opportunity. Excellent AV though

Lame lame lame. Both the wife and I thought it was crap, and it just goes to prove that Statham is a one-trick pony, Clive Owen models his poorer roles on cardboard boxes, and De Niro has solidified his status as "in it for the paycheck" as this typifies the sort of crap he's done for the last 10 years.

Audio and video? Who cares.

FQ - 3/10
AQ - 7/10 (didn't watch it loud so couldn't really tell how good it was)
PQ - 7/10
I quite liked Killer Elite, not great, but not that bad.
Each to his own

I had the pleasure of watching "warrior" what a fantastic film, a real hidden gem of a film should have done so much better then it did.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Slow. First 40 minutes were so slow it was practically comatose! Now I wasnt expecting full on action at all - just the opposite - and I was glad to see it was directed by the same guy as Let the Right One In (which I really liked - and that was slow too).

I felt like I was watching a sequel at times. I think the film presumed you knew all about it and had read the book and seen the TV series too. I had little flashbacks of the Alec Guinness tv series even though I never watched that properly - kind of remember bits as a kid. Gary Oldman even sounds like Alec Guinness at times.

Film kicks into life once Tom Hardy appears - another excellent performance from him. I have to say though, I was quite glad the film ended when it did - Im not sure I could have hung on for another hour or so. And for some reason, even though it was set in 1973, it never quite felt like it for me. And I kept expecting Gary Oldman to phone Christian Bale too which didnt help!

Im sure some people will love this one and some people will hate it. Me? Im in between on this one. Ive got no real desire to see it again in all honesty and Im glad it was a rental. Good all the same, just not as good as I was expecting.

Film 7/10 (extra point for the acting which was great)
PQ 8/10
AQ 8/10

EDIT - Almost forgot. Some of the music choices in this film were odd. Especially first 40 minutes I think. I kept saying to myself "cut the music! you dont need it!". To me the music seemed like an afterthought - as if it had been tacked on. Just didnt suit the film it was tacked on to in my opinion.

I thought it was average but after hearing so much for it , i was decidedly underwhelmed. I had felt like posting this for some time and can't resist it any longer.

I felt uninvolved with the plot and the action throughout. And this is the kind of film i generally like. But this particular movie certainly seems to have a fan base.

The Beaver for me last night. Yet another title that only got a DVD release so I had to import a locked Region A copy :-(

Glad I made the effort. The critics were really mean to this but no matter what you think of Mel Gibson as a human being, this film features his best acting performance in a long time. It's an interesting study of mental illness and unlike most Hollywood films I've seen. I thought it was thought-provoking and had a consistency of tone that showed Jodie Foster makes a solid director - it would have been so easy for her to have gone overboard on visual flourishes instead of concentrating on character and story.

Well worth a viewing in my opinion.

Watched 'The Last Exorcism' last night. Much better than Emily Rose but will always be crapped on by the Original. It was a decent enough flick though. Seen worse

Limitless tonight, another Lovefilm rental. Quite enjoyed the film but I haven't really taken to Bradley Cooper in anything yet.
Good picture and sound, though.

I managed to avoid watching Abduction over the last couple of nights, and instead watched Hugo 3D last night. What can I say? Fantastic movie with great sound design and the 3D was simply awesome...the best I've seen since Avatar.

A definite re-watch for me...

FQ - 9/10
AQ - 8/10 (some great moments, but again didn't play it loud to really appreciate it)
PQ - 10/10

Last nights special viewing was Paranormal inActivity 3 with the Mrs. What a boring film, my washing machine can show greater scenes of tension and action. I hate this cheap parlour trick of just having a series of loud bangs to scare the audience. Incideous was particularly awful in this respect.
MY CHOICE OF FILM NEXT WEEKEND!!!

Eh?

The original? What original? You dont mean The Exorcist do you?! There is no connection between the two films other than a similar sounding title - you could apply this argument to hundreds of films!

Apologies if I have the wrong end of the stick but Im pretty sure its not me!

Cool

Fringe yet again an other story from season 1 that was only half resolved and the other half what the flip was that all about.
Good grief The Event got criticized but at least the story followed on from week to week this I'm getting half a story a week and an unsolved mystery that at present has no continuity.

Last night was The Sidney Poitier film Stir Crazy

It's been quite a while since I last saw this but I found it quite an enjoyable revisit. The humour has certainly dated along with some other aspects of the film, but I always enjoy watching Gene Wilder and felt a sense of nostalgia for the era, which now feels a very long time ago.

The PQ overall was very good, apart from 3 or 4 very brief shots which look very bad, looking to be struck from a poor print and even looking almost upscaled at one point (just after Wilder and Pryor first meet their lawyer). It doesn't look like any sort of restoration has been carried out,a healthy level of grain is present as well as the odd bit of print damage. Skintones show a bit of red push but nothing overly distracting.

Audio is a 1.5Mbit LPCM mono track which does it's job just as I'd expected on a release like this.

No extras, this is a barebones release and as much as I would have like some featurettes or interviews for the very low price I can't really complain.

I'd love a release of Silver Streak next, it's my favourite of the Wilder/Pryor films (although I still haven't seen their fourth and final film). Although there's a lot less of the duo together (their chemistry being discovered in this film), I like it as much for the general Hitchcockian feel and the Henry Mancini score.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes"

Last night I finally got round to watching "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". I thought it was a pretty good movie, though a few plot holes here and there. I really like the work done with the CGI chimps, conveying more emotion and character than some of the films human counterparts managed. I don't think I'll ever be a fan of James Franco! Good to see John Lithgow though, hadn't realised he was in this.

PQ: 9
AQ: 8 (particularly enjoyed some of the spacial effects around the soundstage)
FQ: 7.5 (Kept me entertained, just wished for a more flushed out ending)

Hugo (2D BD)

I've quite happily sat through some long movies and never felt the running time. 3hr epics that I could happily watch again and again, the time flying in. Hugo, minus credits, is roughly 2hrs long and I felt every grinding minute of those 2hrs.

If not for Ben Kingsley's wonderful performance, I would have turned it off after checking the running time at the 85min mark and realising that there were 40mins to go. Sacha Baron Cohen was quite frankly embarrassing, IMO.
Chloë Grace Moretz is a better actor by far. Aside from Kingsley, she's a shining bright light, making Asa Butterfield as Hugo, come off as incredibly stilted and even annoying in places.

But, my biggest problem with the film?

Orange and teal overload.

Scorsese may have had pure intentions, by skewing the colours,(as he did with The Aviator), to try and invoke a different era, but now it just comes across as looking like every other orange and teal coloured movie: Lazy and unattractive. All of this is visible in a BD transfer, that was, as far as my eyes were concerned...flawless.

It's always the movies I hate that get exemplary transfers and Hugo was no exception.
Video and audio are first rate, with Howard Shore's lovely score being another plus point.

Thank heavens I only borrowed this from a friend at work.

Mine liked Troll Hunter, though I did subject her to Piranhas. To be fair, I disliked that too.

Anyway, 2 BDs today. Part 1 of the extended Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (very good - looking forward to part 2) and The Great Game from Sherlock series 1 (superb).
