i was watching day of the daleks today - i really like what they did with the effects, much improved but not so it stands out too much. The effect of the guns was brilliant and the daleks sounded much better. Shame they don't have the money to do this on all the releases

keep posting the bargains Roj - you almost had me buying Eden the other day (one of my favourites despite Tom getting carried away)

Although not yet officially announced, it would appear that "The Claws of Axos" is set for re-release as a Special Edition with improved picture quality, just as "Inferno" is due later this year.

I read this on a dedicated thread on Gallifrey Base - and I note that Amazon UK already have it listed for pre-order.

I doubt I'll rebuy Axos or Inferno again

Obviously, it's each to their own, but considering these DVD releases are (in my experience) dead easy to sell - combined with the fact they they drop from around £13 to around £8 within 6 months or so of release, they're not really a big purchase item.

I'll definately be going for "Vengeance on Varos", "Inferno" and "Claws of Axos" on re-release.

Go for them Brian, if only to provide funding for the animated stories yet to come! PS If only life were so simple!

As you say if only life was so simple. My VOV cover is signed by Colin Baker so I certainly wouldn't be getting rid of that one.

Hmm I was not inclined to repurchase these having watched the 2 pertwee ones recently and I still own them, you make a good argument though.

I don't plan to get any more colin baker stories, I only have revelation of daleks now - from davros set. If they do a cybermen boxset* I would get attack of cybermen again.

* come on 2E we really need one, upgraded earthshock, full length Silver Nemesis, reanimated tenth planet and moonbase, 2 existing episodes from wheel in space (at least with audio filling 4 missing episodes), remastered tomb (from rev 3).

The British Board of Film Classification has passed special features that will appear on the DVD of Terror of the Zygons:

00:26:25:04 THE UNIT FAMILY - PART THREE
00:19:38:05 MERRY-GO-ROUND - THE FUEL FISHERS
00:01:47:19 (EASTER EGG)

Nice cover for "The Ambassadors of Death". Thanks Brian.

A story I'm looking forward very much to seeing again. One episode of this (episode 4), was the first Doctor Who that I ever saw in colour. It was at a friend's house, who invited me around to see him for the afternoon/evening, and I ended up having to sit through the Cup Final on Grandstand - which overran - so delaying the start of my favourite TV programme.

Colour Doctor Who didn't start for me until the start of Tom Baker's era.

You're welcome mate. A nice story there of seeing it for the first time in colour. I can remember going to my Grandparents and seeing Star Trek TOS for the first time in colour. They were put out as they wanted to watch something else on the other side.

It's funny how these things stick in one's mind. I guess we have to have enough years under our belts, but we have no influence over these things. The excitement all those years ago (pre domestic video recorders) of waiting for the episode to start, the title music etc.

I remember the excitement in the mid to late 70s of buying the Target books from WH Smith's in Croydon, walking (to save the bus fare) from South Norwood just to see if there was a new book on the shelves. Sometimes there was - sometimes not. Big disappointment if not - elation if there was. And then on my walk back home, I couldn't take my eyes of the cover, having to be careful not to walk into a lamp post - or anything else!

It's quite funny also to think how (as kids) we attempted to "dominate" the proceedings at someone else's home. If it was for Doctor Who nowadays, I let my nephew get away with t, but I wonder what the adults thought back then.

On a diiferent note - back to the main thrust of this thread - "Terror of the Zygons" extras have (sort of) been announced. This was a story I loved - and had a very "end of season" feel about it, probably because that's the way it was originally planned.

Have had a review disc of Planet of Giants for nearly a week now, and review is almost finished. There are some superb extras to be found on it, not least of which the reconstructions of the episodes 3 & 4 to their original length - they were cut n' shut into a single entity to pick the pace up.

The accompanying documentary about said recon is incredible, and you just wait until you see the guy they got to impersonate Hartnell doing his stuff! I also received the 2-disc edition of Claws of Axos. Oh well, you have to take the rough with the smooth...

But the DVD copy of Planet of Giants? Willies will be hardened!

I'd read on another forum that the person who impersonated Hartnell on the reconstructed version of "Planet of Giants" has done an incredible job. I find the whole reconstruction very intriguing - and Ian Levine reportedly had to push very hard for the chance to get this on the DVD range. Well done Ian! Of course, there'll be those who are not overly keen on the reconstruction, but surely that's one of the great things about the DVD format, that it's possible (or has the potential) to please all. We'll be getting a restored version of the story as originally transmitted - along with what appears to be a reconstructed version of what might originally been the intended for broadcast. I don't remember this story from original broadcast (don't think we had a TV then), but I'm looking forward to this release.

PS You're not one of the Wilson Brothers, are you?

Sounds good for POG. I hope there's no fly in the ointment as I eagerly await the review.

Sod it! Busted...

The recons of Eps 3 & 4 will please anyone who watches them. They would have to, as Ian Levine has such exacting standard that if the finished product meets with his approval, then it will surpass those of everyone else. We had fun watching Planet of Giants again, and we feel that the recons make the same difference between the two edits of James Cameron's The Abyss, where one is more action-orientated, the other allows for a richer plot and more interaction between characters.

Claws of Axos comes with that incredibly irritating French & Saunders Doctor Who sketch, which like the usual "insider" skits they did, is about as funny as an unfavourable bone marrow test.

Let's hope for a copy of The Crusade completed using similar methods...

I've got that on the VHS of The Curse Of The Fatal Death. It's about as funny as mumps.

Sorry - I didn't mean to break your cover!

I feel sure you're right regarding Ian Levine's exacting standards - and of course, he's highly dedicated to Doctor Who. I'm aware that he's come in for some stick over the years for this and that - and that he's quite outspoken. I first came across his name around the early 80s in the DWB magazine/fanzine edited by Gary Levy. I suppose that's what also makes this release so nice, that at least he's had some input (apart from just clips on the extras).

Now I'd really look forward to animations done for the missing episodes of The Crusade - and of course The Moonbase, The Tenth Planet, Power of the Daleks - Oh, I could just go on and on!

Yes I loved DWB. Gary later changed his surname to Leigh as I recall. It was the Doctor Who Bulletin but I gather the Doctor Who Magazine wasn't too happy on how well it was doing. So it became a general sci-fi mag with the revised title of Dreamwatch Bulletin.

I had a letter or two published in it.

Occasional poster "Zombie Twin 2" is the other one, BTW. At least Shaun of the Dead was able to validate various internet login names for us...

Oh, and might we say that the amount of audio options in which to watch Claws of Axos will have your head spinning, being so extensive!

Occasional poster? You need to get him to pull his weight a bit! Seriously, I've roughly no idea who you are (as such), but came across you both first on Gallifrey Base, I believe - where I am a very occasional poster.
It's good to see you here though - you're doing a wonderful job.

Your mention of audio options on the "Claws of Axos" Special Edition has me intrigued! The Restoration Team deserve lots of praise also.

Yes Bri, you're absolutely right. Gary Levy did change his name to Leigh at some point. I subscribed to DWB for quite a long time, and I too had (only one) letter published in it - around 1987/1988.

Incredible - what a small world. I have no idea how unusual I am, being someone that has followed Doctor Who for as long as I can remember (which is Galaxy 4), but I've never been to a "proper" convention - only the BBC Longleat 20th Anniversary bash - but I've never met fans or had anything to do with fandom. I don't know why - it hasn't really been anything conscious.

PS The only other thing I've been to - which wasn't only Doctor Who related, was the Daily Mail Boys and Girls Exhibition at Olympia (London) around 1967. Anybody else remember those?

You're one of the lucky ones who made it to Longleat? I gather huge numbers of folk didn't because of traffic jams and the like. Too many people attempted to go. I've just read Lis Sladen's autobiography and she mentioned just how crowded it was. I remember them covering it on the radio and wishing I was there.

Yes - I was sort-of lucky, and sort-of unlucky, actually. I'm pleased that I went there, and that I must have avoided the worst of the traffic jams etc., but I didn't actually get into the exhibition. Sorry, I omitted to mention that. Back then, I actually quite liked driving, and took along the younger brother of a work colleague - driving from SE London to Wiltshire. So that part of it wasn't too bad - but we must have stood in a queue for hours. I can't really remember for how long, but what made my day was actually seeing Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison at close range. I think I'd read afterwards, that various actors/actresses were sent out to the queues to try and quell the "anger" of the crowds! I remember clearly one lady in the queue with children having a bit of a go at Pertwee, demanding to know how much longer we would have to wait. Pertwee (quite rightly in my mind), told her that he hadn't organised the event and that he had no idea - more or less telling her what a daft question she'd asked. Think of Pertwee in character of the Doctor verbally attacking one of the politicians he liked having a go at, and you get the idea!

I suppose I regret not having got in, but somehow it was worth it! Odd, really.

I saw Pertwee having a go at a fan in an autograph queue in front of me. He was very much as you describe.

Was there a problem with the greatest show in the galaxy?

Amazon seemed to have withdrawn it?
