I've not spotted this thread before but it is well and truly needed. I harp on about hmv continually moaning about struggling in business yet they expect ridiculous prices to be paid for average tat. It would be a shame to see them go under but by crikey they would deserve to.

I remember last week in my local asda, the blu ray section had shrunk and been moved, so I asked the guy what's going on? He replied that blu ray just ain't taking off so the bosses think it will eventually fail! I said maybe if you didn't take the **** with prices we'd buy more. £25 for 3d movies, £20 for bog standard movies......I know they want to make a profit but retail these days is a laugh. Making a 100% Mark up on everything is killing things like blu ray!

So very true , these stores do take the **** at times

Try to be competitive and you will shift more , price them high and they will sit on your shelves forever and a day !

I was in an Asda today with the usual number of BDs and they had The Mechanic for a tenner. They are far better on prices than HMV.

Im suspecting the combined amounts of Lex Luther's Ill-gotten gains wouldn't cover the ticket price

On a side note, I recently received a £20 gift voucher for hmv. It's only current use appears to be to make instore items the same price as online

Official policy now (in order to survive) is cut back on space for CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays (a declining market) and concentrate instead on hi-tech items like iPads, iPods and headphones.

Blu-ray will likely suffer the most because they sell so few compared to DVDs and CDs, manly because of the ridiculously high pricinng when compared with the rivals (online and supermarkets). It seems to me to be a bit of a Catch-22.

I asked in my local HMV on Friday when I was buying True Grit and was told €44.99 (about £40) but they hadn't received any stock.

I checked yesterday, they still didn't have any, but the price was now going to be €47.99 (about £42).

Probably gonna be £50 by the time they actually have any

My one is a mess, there's the 2 For £20 section, sale items, reduced boxsets and then the standard A-Z. Finding anything is a pain in the bum and more often than not, they have the stock in the back and not on display. What use is that?

There was a disc I wanted, but only if it was in the 2 For £20 and low and behold, there it was.
However, despite having a display backing, it was labelled as £16.99. I was told that not only was it not part of the offer, but that it had now gone up to £20 on its own. Get bent, love.

I've wondered about that. My store had about 3 copies of the last Dr Who series at £90 each. I checked a few days later and they were gone. There's no way they sold them all at that price so did they send them. somewhere else or are they in the storeroom?

Edinburgh Princess Street store this afternoon and I swear the following is true ( I have photos if proof is needed)

Lord of the Rings T.E. Trilogy - £60
Aliens set - - £70
Sherlock Homes - £25
Shrek the whole story - £70
Scream 2 - £30
28 days + 28 weeks double set - £45

The huge shock was the LOTR and Aliens prices. No joke. Even Shrek

How come there's a difference in their in store stores? Surely a case for the Office of fair trading. Couldn't believe it. I'm putting these photos up tomorrow though because its just crazy. I'm sure if I had more time I'd have found more. I mean Scream 2 for £30 !!!!!

Someone posted a while back that it was down to any competion each store had in it's area. That was mainly down to Virgin but they're no longer on the high street so god knows.

It doesn't surprise me that HMV overcharge for BD's, they probably think that they can get away with it now they have no competition on the high street. HMV also lose points with me now that they have virtually done away with PC software / games, I remember when the entire back wall was once PC stuff, now its all consoles.

Asda puzzles me. Blu ray I see as a high end / luxury item, now forgive me for saying so, but the local Asda near me is frankly a bit of a dive. It would surprise me greatly if Asda of all retailers saw their sales of such items skyrocket.

I guess the main competition to places like HMV now is Tescos. Sainsbury's near me used to have a good range and had a great 2 for £20 selection too (and had it for a good year or more ago), though now the BD section has almost vanished, and has slowly merged with the DVD range.

When I lived in Washington, Tyne & Wear that is not DC the local Asda often had good prices on the new releases but not a great number of titles. One thing about HMV is that they tend to hav.e a fuller range.

People do, that's the scary thing.

I've seen people going around lifting stacks of discs, with either no care or no clue as to how much more
they're paying.

Hey, it's their money, that's how I try to look at it.

I read a story years ago about David Bowie returning to the UK and he went to a HMV and bought every DVD he wanted. He couldn't give a damn about the prices. I've seen similar scenes in the Oxford St HMV when I've been in London. Some people just buy everything they want regardless of the price.
