as much as I love the high def quality I have to admit to getting more and more annoyed by the wait to actually get a disc to start

I just want to pop and disc in and have the film on asap

It's called a PS3. Might look like a George Foreman grill, but it's never let me down. Cue the standalone whiners in 3...2...1...

Whilst we have to accept we are saddled with Java, on an Oppo BD player or PS3 the impact of slow loading discs is significantly reduced. Get yourself one of these and you'll find the format much more akin to DVD.

Exactly what I was thinking - never had a problem with any discs in my PS3 phat or slim.

I hear it plays games too

I know we live in an age where we expect things at the click of a button, but really...how bloody impatient are we? I have a standalone player (Sony S360) and don't find I have to wait too long at all. Perhaps they should start dishing out Ritalin with standalones?

My standalone is pretty slow with loading discs, much slower than my PS3. It's not really a problem to me as I'm quite patient... If a disc doesn't load in the one, it's sure to play fine in the other.

Oh, the joys of 2 machines.

Loading times (I have a Pioneer BDP-LX08) don't bother me too much - I put the disc in to load and go and get a snack ready.

What does bug me is that, as a heavy user of Lovefilm, I seem to have a lot more playback issues with Blu-ray than I did with DVD - usually just the picture freezing or skipping but sometimes picture break-up like bad Freeview. Perhaps Blu-ray is just more vulnerable to mishandling damage than DVD. And having only one Blu-ray player, I can't just slip the disc into the laptop, which usually did the trick if my standalone player couldn't play a disc. It wasn't ideal, but at least I got to see the end of the film. I do make sure I keep my firmware up to date.

But when it works, it's lovely - all that 1080p goodness

I think they may be more delicate and require cleaning off of finger prints and dried curry etc. Have had my fair share of unwatchable DVDs though as well.

So did you swap these discs for the same film to see if it was the actual disc? I've got a fair few blu-rays and not found a single disc that won't play. Whether on my UK PS3 or pc blu-ray drive.

I had a Sony 300 player for a few days and it was slow enough to make a pot of tea while waiting for the tray to open from standby.

My Panasonic is much faster and takes about 10 seconds longer to get something onscreen than my PS3 used to- although it does vary.

My UK season 1 Star Trek set appeared on screen faster than the US season 2 set which displays a poor image of the Enterpise firing phasers as its "loading" icon

My Blu Ray player loading times are more or less on par with my ps3 plus there is less judder in films.

I have a Sony BDP-S350 and I have only had 1 issue with a disc that wouldn't play (Terminator 2) and a firmware update fixed that. The wait for a disc to load is perfectly acceptable and the results are more than worth it. I can't quite believe people are complaining about things like this.

At least they now have resume for java discs now. The region A of Up has it. If stopped during the film, it still has to play the trailers before the menu but these can be skipped quickly. The menu then has a progress bar down the bottom with the reached position. Pressing play movie carries on from the last position. It is a kind of auto bookmark.

I haven't had any problems with over 200 discs and still using the original Sony S350 profile 1.1 firmware.

I have a Panasonic BD35 and have had no problems with discs. I have about 40 movies. Average time from tray to film is 30 secs. Blu Ray is the best thing ever. I cringe watching SD stuff now.

I have seen what profile 2.0 can do with things like BD Live and it doesn't interest me at all which is one reason why I haven't updated. Are profile 2.0 players slower to load if they have a profile 2.0 disc compared to playing the same disc in a 1.1 one? What if the the BD Live part is disabled/switched off.

I have around 100 each of HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, and I think I've only encountered one small problem with one disc.

I must just be lucky.

No issues here either, 75 disks and everyone has played without issues on my Sony S350

To the OP do you think based on the evidence on this thread that maybe, just maybe your player has a fault as opposed to Blu-Ray being dodgy as a format?

Yep im still using the same firmware that the S350 came with and got mine nearly a year ago. No problems on any discs.

And yes, BD-live didnt interest me in the slightest and ive no intention of using it (I dont think im missing much except longer load times!)

Some discs load faster than others. Yes its a bit odd compared to how fast DVD's are but Im used to it - put the disc in and get a drink etc while youre waiting!

No issues with my PS3 playing discs, but even on ths PS3 the wait times seem overly long, I am willing to wait, but its seems we would have an almost instant start these days.

The most annoying things for me are that resume play doesn't seem to work with the majority of discs (DVD worked why not ALL BluRays), also they discs dont always default to the highest quality sound output. They are just annoying things you would have thought they would put in the spec from day one???

No probs with my BD35 so far, and the Sony's I had before that (350, 550, 363) were great as well.

The PS3 is still The Daddy, although there is that bitstreaming niggle with the Slim.

I've got an original 60gb PS3 and provided the disk isn't a Fox title then playback is fantastic. If it's Fox I invariably find the disk freezing just as the film starts.

So I went out and bought a Panny BD35 which although slower than the PS3 wasn't annoyingly slow. And then it packed up so I've just bought a Sony BDP-S360, which although slow isn't irritatingly slow.
