Clash of the titans (harryhausen)

Play.com (UK) : Clash Of The Titans (1981) (Blu-ray) : Blu-ray - Free Delivery

It's a while since we've had some Harryhausen on Blu so this is a welcome addition.

I wish First Men In The Moon or Argonauts would come out

Unlikely as all the Harryhausen films out so far are Columbia titles as are virtually all the other ones left to release

Clash is a Warner title and apart from Valley of Gwangi and Beast from 20000 Fathoms I can't think of any others.

The 4 out on Blu so far are:

It came from Beneath The Sea
Earth v The Flying Saucers
Twenty Million Miles to Earth
7th Voyage of Sinbad.

Japan and the US had a boxset of all 4.

In the US the box was the only way to buy Saucers and It Came from Beneath on Blu while the UK still has no Bluray of 7th Voyage

Is Earth v The Flying Saucers much of an upgrade from the standard DVD?

Cheers.

Yeah I'd be interested in the same info, is it?
Now that was a great movie..
Will look for Clash, might be fun to watch again, don't think the stop motion effects will hold up very well, I remember laughing when I 1st saw the movie..
But that was Ray, he was some one who knew how to wow audiences early in his career..
I 2nd Jason and the Scary Skeletons, this would be a blast..

The image is better than the dvd , however the upgrade is not really that significant given that much of the film has process shots that fall below HD standards in my book - the Star Trek TOS Blurays always seem to drop to sd whenever an effect is about to appear onscreen within the live action too - unavoidable I suppose -and Saucers being made on the cheap looks more obvious than it does on some of the others

If you have the 2 disc dvd then the upgrade may not be worth it but if you only have the old single disc I'd go for it.

Most reviews rate Saucers as the poorest of the collection so far

There are certain films I would buy on Blu regardless and the Harryhausen films are amongst them.

Ironically - after boring us to death with the Leonard Nimoy presented Harryhausen documentary on every single one of the original Columbia dvd's of his movies , its not appeared on any of the Blurays yet.

I might have it on nearly a dozen dvd's but I would like it on at least 1 Bluray despite it being long out of date

No doubt the UK will miss out on the book just like we did with Poltergeist and North By Northwest

Both Poltergeist and North by Northwest are Warner releases and therefore region free (or at least for the moment), so if you wanted the digi-book editions (and I must admit I do think they are nice) then simply import them.

I already have the NBNW one and will get Poltergeist at some point.

I was just making the point that the UK will likely be let down again

The Poltergeist US Blu is considerably more expensive than the UK one - even more than the £5 extra I paid for NBNW

I'm multiregion for Blu so coding not a problem anyway

Despite not being out until March 16th Playusa have posted my US Bluray of this title today.

If the book is as nice as the NBNW one then it will be worth the additional £8

The UK one is currently available as part of the " 2 for £18" deal at Play

No mention of any audio sync problems. I saw this at the Tyneside Cinema, with Harryhausen present and later on TV. Both times there was a reel with the sound badly out of sync but the rest of the film was fine. Looks like they've corrected the fault.

As I recall the sfx shots in most/all of his films had quite a bit of grain. So grain haters beware.

Much as I enjoyed it, and have it on DVD, I'm not sure I could justify the upgrade personally. Looks like the review was of the opinion it is remembered best for the effects than the story

Indeed.
The Columbia releases are very grainy especially with the effects shots which account for a lot of the running time.

I hope Columbias delay in issuing more Harryhausen is because they are deciding whether to carry on in sequence or do the sensible thing and give us Jason right now although First Men In the Moon is my personal favourite

There can be few things as wonderful as the prospect of Judi Bowker in 1080p My GOd that girl was good looking. Anyway... Still holding out for the UK release for £11.99. I like the film, but I'm not paying the £16-£20 the US retailers want.

On the plus side it does look like the US edition is the "book" format with some nice stuff to look at/read while the inferior UK version will no doubt come vanilla.

Inferior is a strong word. As long as the technical specs are the same I couldn't give a toss about a book. I barely have time to watch the films, let alone the extras books.

Inferior is defined in the dictionary as "less important, valuable or worthy". By that definition the UK version is inferior. Fact!

Just because YOU don't have time to view extra's or read the book that comes with the US version is irrelevant to that point :-P

It was shortly before it got a general release. It was billed as a premiere but I can't remember if it was a Northern or North East premiere. I talked to him after the showing and I attempted to quiz him on his favourite stop motion work outside his own but he was too diplomatic to say. He came across as a really nice bloke.

All the best

Whether that is the main reason or not it is clear that many of Warners UK releases ARE inferior to the US ones , like their Wizard of Oz boxset , Harry Potter Boxset , Blade Runner boxset , Dirty Harry boxset etc.

The "book" editions are very nice souvenirs of the movies and classics like North by Northwest and any Harryhausen titles will be very collectible in this format

Obviously its a personal choice whether you want to pay the £8 extra for the book and to be honest its only genuine classics like this film that would make me pay the price.

I would say you would have to be a big fan like me to pay £16.99 instead of £9

Well obviously you would not know how to read??
What is wrong with having collector books with special release BDs??
I have a brilliant LD version of Blade runner which has some great books accompanying.
Same with AKIRA, oh yeah, your funny HA HA, yeah who reads Blu Rays...

Back to topic, and now,
Totally OT.

I have seen locally, (Australia) BR releases for 12 AUD, about 6 quid, which is cheap, very cheap...
Can any one confirm if this is being replicated over the other side of the world??

If so, it seems that BR will now become what DVD was to VHS if they keep this pricing scheme up...

Fingers Xed...
