Cost of disks still putting me off

I've had a BD player for the best part of a year now but I only have around 6 disks, 2 of which I got free and the others are boxsets which were on extreme special offer.

I'm still buying DVDs though my rate of purchase has fallen off - because if it's a film I really want I'm holding of in the hope that BD disk prices drop.

So the nett result is that since buying my BD player the number of disks (DVD and BD) that I buy has reduced dramatically.

I rent movies from Blockbuster and always choose BD because the cost of renting is the same as for DVD.

Personally, whilst the distributors maintain these high prices I can't see the BD revolution happening anytime soon.

I know that DVD prices were high when they came out, but they offered a stunning improvement over VHS. By comparison, BD has to compete with DVD and whilst there is a noticable improvement it isn't as marked as DVD<>VHS in my opinion.

Just my thoughts oin the subject - what do others think.

Cheers,

Nigel

If you know where to look they are significantly cheaper. If you go by the high prices of the likes of the high street such as HMV and even the supermarkets, then I agree they are expensive, but buying online you will get bargain prices.

All of the blu-rays I have bought recently have been under £10. Some have been £7 thanks to BOGOF offers. There have been a huge number of these recently so I find it surprising you have missed them.

I am quite happy to spend up to £12 for a blu-ray and I have been able to get all of the films I want sticking to that price.

If you are prepared to wait a month or two after a release you will get them significantly cheaper. Ignore those paying £20 to £30 for Star Trek and Transformers 2, if people want early then they pay for it.

My friend is the same, he has only a handful of films as he prefers to rent them but I am the opposite, I never rent BD's I just buy the one's I want, being able to get films off this forum for as little as afew quid has really helped my collection grow and certain films just have to be on BD, there is no way I could happily sit down to watch the new Star Trek film on DVD

I'm often paying £10 or less at the moment. I picked up 10 discs for £52 from HMV instore about 3 weeks ago and one of those was a Bond. £5.20 a disc on average is excellent value.

I do appreciate that, though they tend to be older titles and don't have any intention of replacing my existing DVD collection - would be too expensive and to be honest I don't watch the DVDs I already have enough to justify changing them.

It's the new release titles, where I can the DVD for £7 or £8 but best price for the BD is £15 or £16.

What happens is that I see the DVD price as attractive, but then think that I should really get it on BD. But then I see the BD is over twice the price so I end up with neither.

Cheers,

Nigel

Hi Nigel, I do think Blu ray is finally starting to get reasonable all you have to do is a search at the likes of Amzon and Play and see the prices they are now offering. Even my local Morrisons is doing decent deals on Blu ray.

As an example play.com currently has the band of brothers boxset for 16 quid!!

Thought I was the only one thinking this way. Don't know why though, I was spending £15-18 on dvd's when they first come out.

I dont think its all that bad tbh. I rarely buy new releases, and catalogue titels are cheap as chips, usually. To put it in perspective, I tried to buy the BD of Moon in HMV earlier, but they'd sold out and could only offer the DVD at £15. At £18 for the BD, the difference is negligable.

as others have said its really not that bad as long as you look out for deals - often posted on here in the BD discount forum. For example I have just bought Moon and Terminator Salvation on BD from Tesco for just under £11 each using the "get 500 clubcard points ie £5" promotion on now. And there are many such examples. I almost never pay more than £12 and often £7 to £9.

Not really the older titles. For example Angels and Demons is BOGOF in Tesco at £20. That works out to be £10 each. They have other titles like Gladiator too.

I've been able to get most films released in 2009 except for ones only just released for less than £10, so it isn't old back catalogue releases that are cheap, new ones are too.

Patience is the key, the big new releases will get sub £12/10 at some point. It boils down to how long you are willing to wait. For me I have so many at home still to watch that I am willing to wait a few months unless it's a title I really want to watch as soon as possible.

I do have a thing for the limited/exclusive titles that I will pay a few quid more for. But they are only every now and again. I am still a young pup and started buying a lot of my DVDs when then were at such low prices so the odd £15+ BD doesn't phase me that much.

That's exactly why I refuse to pay more than single figures for a BD title as the vast majority of my BDs are upgrades.

In response to the OP, in my experience the cost of BD is not putting me off, I've got 56 BD's and astonishingly I've spent on average £5.50 per title!

The key is to be patient. I rarely preorder as they soon become cheaper and it doesn't take long to get bargains.

Cheapest BD's I have had are £4.50 and only two were more than £10 (Monsters Inc £11.99). There was also Red Cliff SE at £17 but that was really £8.50 as it was two films. Most were around £6 from the old Amazon 3 for 2.

The difference to me is huge in terms in PQ so I have no problems paying £10 for a BD. I was paying £35 for a laserdisc and DVD's at £20 only 10 years ago.

It doesn't take long for most new release BD's to go down to £9.99.

15 months into Blu Ray and I have 163 and three quarters of them are films I have not bought on DVD.

Yes it's a hard lesson but patience pays off if money is an issue.

I look around now and see the market pretty much accepting the £16-£18 pricing for a new Blu and when compared to new DVD releases and surely massive cost reduction in pressing Blu the gap in price is pure profiteering.
Are they making hay while the sun shines or one last grasp before the format is abandoned a lot sooner than they expected because one thing is for sure new release prices are not going to tempt new devotees to the Blu platform.

Over the last couple of weeks I've spent a lot of money on movie and tv on Blu-ray, the only reason is the deluge of bundled deals and offers (2for1 or 10% off etc) yet a lot of titles I want I won't be buying since they are priced too high yet I know that won't be changing anytime soon as even on the AVF the rush for pre-orders and paying crazy money (my opinion only ) shows no sign of ceasing

If someone wants to see a film that might be a keeper then just rent it and buy it later when the price is right. I have done that many times.

That's exactly what I do. Unless I'm 100% sure it's something I know I really want and will watch again, I rent it first. Lovefilm has saved me an absolute fortune.

The days of me buying any DVD that looked even remotely interesting are long gone

Exactly - same here - for example - personally I would not even contemplate the new Star Trek BD (excellent as it is) for £20 - when it roughly halves - as it will - I shall get it.

In fact I do so well on BD pricing I actually feel sorry for the people I see in Tescos etc paying £10+ for new release DVDs - no way would I do that either.

That's exactly what I do and I often find that once I've seen a film I'm not bothered about watching it again anytime soon anyway. I've rented over 100 BluRays from Blockbuster online at between £12 and £15 per month depending on whether I've dropped down to the 2 discs at a time deal (during summer) or 3 discs at a time. It works out around £1 per film (it probably costs me more in lamp hours or upgrading the projector ).

I've picked a few bargains up by following the bargains sub forum such as mispriced deals that have been honoured (Like WallE for about £8). I also scan through Play.com and Amazon occasionally, plus the ex rental stock in the local Blockbuster.

It was £21.99 at a well used site on the forums and other places. Some people seemed happy to pay this. Personally although I am a massive Star Trek fan, I can't warrant paying that kind of price for a blu-ray.

It was only in a small number of HMV branchs. I got mine from the Sunderland branch and the £5 discs I got are at least £10 now. There was no song and dance about it. They were just mixed in with all the other titles. The most expensive was For Your Eyes Only at £7 and the rest were a fiver each, I got The Sixth Sense, Fearless, Fly Boys, Starter For Ten, Once, Firewall, A Time To Kill, Dragon Wars and Lou Reed's Berlin. Not a bad haul for £52.

There were quite a few other titles at a fiver but I either already had them or wasn't interested.

All the best
