Beauty and the Beast - UK DVD - Can I find one for less than £50??

For one of the presents for my GF this Christmas I was trying to find a copy of Beauty and the Beast for her, as it's her favourite Disney film.

I want a sealed copy (can't buy her 2nd hand!), so i'm not sure where to turn. Is there any way I can get a copy for around £30 or less?

Damn Disney and they're stupid limited edition rip-off scam!

It's one of their better movies, I'd say £50 was a good deal, I remember paying $1000 for this on laserdisc about 8 years ago, unfortunately due to Disney's business strategy all their so-called classics are deleted after a set amount of time, so finding a sealed copy is going to be hard.

It's not a scam, at all! The whole idea, is to make their titles eminently collectible, which clearly works, because of the numeber of times people - months or years later - decide to buy a Disney title, end-up paying a small-fortune via e-Bay, or some other similar sites, when they could have bought a copy fo rless than £15 at the time of its release!

Unfortunately, as has already been said, unless you're willing to spend a hefty amount of cash and do a lot of research, trying to find a copy in very good condition, that's unplayed, let alone sealed is going to be a nightmare for you, and not cheap!

Try looking through this eBay listing I've just done, and see if that helps, as there seems to be many copies available! However, be very careful they are official, authentic Region 1, Region 2 or Region 4 (depending on what region your DVD player is capable of accepting) titles and NOT pirated or dodgy Region 3 releases before you agree to buy one!

I sold my R1 set for £30 a few weeks ago.
The title has been deleted for several years so the chance of a sealed one is unlikely.

However - ebay , play and Amazon are filled with sellers offering bootlegs and judging from feedback most of the public cannot even tell.

Note that they list the title as R1 but as a bootleg it will be region free.

£50 for a genuine R2 is a good deal - and if you did find a sealed one then mega bucks.

I know you want it for this Christmas, but Beauty & the Beast is confirmed as being re-released in 2010 (on blu-Ray & DVD).

It's gonna be really hard to find a sealed copy for under £50. Best bet might be to get your GF something else this Christmas & get the new release for her birthday or next Christmas?

Assuming it was a genuine R2 set then to find it still sealed after all these years since its deletion would be a miracle - and miracles are expensive.

Why not buy the bootleg . She probably wont tell anyway

The fact there are 5 available makes it clear enough to me that these items are bootleg or the seller has simply sealed used copies - a practice many market traders do

To be fair , some sellers buy them off other traders and can be unaware they are bootleg themselves

This guy must be one lucky seller . Not only does he have years old dvd's of B&TB new and sealed but he was fortunate enough to get new sealed copies of Fantasia and other Disney titles too.

And I wouldn't say he was an avid Disney collector otherwise he would not be selling Snow White for £40+ when the new version has only just come out

Was it really released in a standard amaray case? Mine is the cardboard digipack. He also has a few negatives claiming fake merchandise.

Well that nails it then.

Its surprising how many people cannot tell they are fake - many probably dont care when they are paying £14.99 but £55 should get you genuine goods

Look at the feedback from suckers who have paid £35 for Snow White and £45 for B&TB.

This thread might actually make me watch it this weekend. I checked the discs and they are still mint condition despite being bought in 2002. I must have got the first run (same as my Monsters Inc) as it does look like later pressing were in amarays.

This is the one I have. Look at the prices on Marketplace

i sold my 2 disc edition in mint condition ( red box edition ) on ebay this time last year and it went for £97 ........which will happily cover the blu ray version when released

edit - im pretty sure it was released in an amaray for later pressings with awful box art

no it wasn't - but i had kept the original cellophane on as i had made a slit to allow the dvd to fall out......never thought it would go for that price. BB is one of my faves but watch it every few years of so. after being completely wowed by sleeping beauty blu and hearing the announcement of the bb blu in 2010 i knew it was time to move it on.

the reason it probably went for so much was that it was the first week in december ( pressie ) and all the others on auction were in really used condition.

I don't think Christmas had anything to do with it, you'd be surprised how many of us insane collectors are out there, and what we'd be willing to pay for a mint or sealed copy of a Disney Classic, so I'd keep hold of any Disney Classics you have, especially if they are mint! As, even if they are re-released real aficionados will want the first release!

Must admit I had to pick up the Little Mermaid on laserdisc (CAV) so I could confirm the cell I have was in the movie.

Can't do that on DVD - but then everything is on computers now.

Cheers
