Spot on observation, when this first came out My jaw dropped at that landing scene, gruesome but probably very realistic, it must have been living hell in real life back then, and Spielberg re-created that very well.
Thank God I've never been called up to do anything like that in my lifetime ... respect is due for those that did, on both sides.
It did go downhill a bit after that, but there were some great moments ... I recall the sniper scene, not as good as the sniper scene in FMJ ... IMHO, but still good, then there was that scene where the German soldier slowly put his knife through the neck of the American soldier while softly and gently talking to him ... and the tank scene towards the end, the sound of it on my mediocre system of the time on DVD put the fear of death into me, it was like I was there.
Its been years since I watched this one so my memory may be fuzzy, but that's as I re-call it.
What does concern me though, when this was released on DVD I read comments from the DVD newsgroup about how grainy the DVD was, the answer was, Spielberg obviously wanted an older historical look, and the answer was probably right ... so don't expect pristine state of the art visual quality for the Blu Ray release is my prediction.
Be interesting to see how it turns out ... I was going to buy FMJ with my other Blu-Ray purchases from Play yesterday, but apparently this transfer is really dire and I'd be as well keeping my DVD?
I reckon, especially since I've not watched SPR for a long time, I'll hold off watching it and buy the Blu Ray too ... its certainly got its moments and the sound always was explosive
