Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

This film often gets forgoten or overlooked on Blu-Ray but i think it is real demo material and a great film to boot.

Does any one have any thoughts on it?

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

Nice to have all 3 versions on one disc and nice that Spielberg does not suffer from Lucasitis and hide his original cinema version which is , after all , how the film made its money and reputation

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

I found it over-long and the Frenchman very annoying.

But that's only my opinion, of course, as I know others rate it highly.

However, the end bit when the spaceship (eventually!) arrives, is obvious demo material, especially for sound systems.

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

This is the worse film ever, one of the worst transfers ever...
I laughed when I seen this thread Tele..
I was about to post this link into the thread we were discussing, then I seen it was you that started it LOL..

Good work..

I had seen this when I was probably 10, I was crapping myself, so much mystery, what the hell was going on, and the little kid in the house, all the toys, and his mum freaking out when the BEM were about to get him.
Very well done, shame nothing has been done in a similar vein..

Maybe Speildy should do another, more mature look into, as contact has been the closest IMO to other Alien encounters, with a mature approach.

Or he could just direct my script...

As i say i am sure i read an interview with Speildy a long time ago where he said if he felt the time was right he would do a follow up.

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

He needs to, it would be fantastic, even if its a bomb (doubt Speildy would allow that), maybe we could go to the BEMs home world, or a more prolific 2001, who are we style of conjecture..
We need some serious Sci fi, Forbidden Planet, Solaris, 2001, Soylent Green, CE3K, The Thing, Blade Runner, Contact....
What else is there??
I am sure I have missed a few, but when do us serious Sci fi buffs been given real tangible, mature thought provoking movies, that make us feel humble about our surroundings?
Take away the zapper guns, the space cruisers, Big Eyed Monsters, and Sci fi is really about, who are we, where do we come from? What is out there?.
I am sure many will disagree with me, but Star Wars bites now, its just some 40's serial turned into some monster which no one can control.
As for all the other movies, well, take away the stuff I mentioned before, and they atre pretty shallow.
Monster chase man around a ship, building, city w/e, nothing new about that..
Man battles monster, well thats just a war movie..
Gimmie some brain food, I tire of, "Look out, look out, behind you", if I want to watch horror disguised as Sci fi, I will watch horror, which I am no fan of..

Sorry about my rant, but I am insane you know..

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

This was the second blu ray I bought. The lovely box and booklet that comes with the set is brilliant, and the transfers themselves.. WOW.

I'm a rabid fan of this movie as it was one of the first I can remember watching as a child. Can't recommend this disc highly enough

And I Love "the Frenchman" in this!

I understand what you're saying.....

You left out '2001: Space Odyssey'. Very dry sci-fi and quite psychedelic at the same time.

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

in this book:

The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made

(Fantastic Book, highly recommended!)

There is a chapter called "Night Skies"

This was Spielbergs film about a family terrorised by aliens at their farmhouse

Rick Baker made a terrifying Alien. Then Speilberg dropped the entire project, re wrote it.. and it became E.T

Oops - missed that!

Reading Frank Herbert's 'Dune' at the moment - very good Sci-fi. But I remember the film was (IMO) crap, it would make a good film if done again.

Serious sci-fi?

I actually prefer the Soderbergh remake of Solaris...I know thats sacrilege to some but thats me...fantastic soundtrack too which always gets plus points from me.

Great, serious sci-fi films that you didnt mention above (not all on blu-ray mind!)

Alien
Gattaca
Dark Star
Silent Running
Minority Report
Total Recall (not as dumb as it might appear!)
The Abyss (ok its not space but its still sci-fi!)
Sunshine (could have been great if theyd left out the zombie crap, as it is - its very good)
Star Trek the Motion Picture (first one is pretty serious, not the best one but probably the most serious!)
2010

Off the top of my head anyway - I know ive missed a few.

Ive got high hopes for Moon and im very excited about his plans for the next film which is inspired by Blade Runner (my favourite film).

Yep, great book - well worth a read!

As for Dune...well Dune is a guilty pleasure of mine, plus its a Lynch film so I like it automatically! The best one to see is the extended version (despite its faults) which will hopefully make its way to blu-ray at some point.

Mini-series version? pah!

Re: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

I seriously did not mind Dune, shame that the studios would not allow Lynch his original vision.
Looks great on HD DVD.
As for Omega Man, I don't really consider it too much of a Sci fi film as more of a vampire movie.
Granted its roots come from I am Legend, made 3 times now, Last Man on Earth, Omega Man and I am Legend.
Omega Man standing out like dogs ********...
Still, great film, shame the remake was such a waste..
Wonder if the CE3K script I have written will be made, I have submitted it to Speildy, maybe he is trying to get me more money for my fantastical ideas...
Well I will make sure when me n him make this movie, won't be a I am Legend Farce..

2 thumbs up, Siskel and Hebert...

Great, serious sci-fi films that you didnt mention above (not all on blu-ray mind!)

Alien <--- monster movie
Gattaca
Dark Star <--- surely you can't be serious, it has a beach ball for a bloody monster LOL
Silent Running
Minority Report <--- Tom Crooze, what an scientoligist, movie was nothing fantastic
Total Recall (not as dumb as it might appear!) <--- was probably more behind it than people think, shame Arnie made it an Arnie pic...
The Abyss (ok its not space but its still sci-fi!) The extra stuff, where the aliens shake their finger, and all hells stops, no wonder JC left this out of the orig.
Sunshine (could have been great if theyd left out the zombie crap, as it is - its very good) <--- Event Horizon, if only we had just a little more, and 1 thing that had holes all the way through it, why didn't they just make the whole ship of what the sheild was made of?? Same as why don't they make planes out of what they make black boxes..
Star Trek the Motion Picture (first one is pretty serious, not the best one but probably the most serious!) <--- Good movie, brave move
2010 <--- Some one please take away Peter Hyamms ability to direct.
My amendments in red...

Some interesting stuff there...
Dark Star, you know thats not serious Sci fi, probably one of the funniest attempts to Rip off 2001 with talking bombs..

The HDDVD was a revelation to me, it was like watching a different movie - it is amazing.

I have just purchased Close Encounters on BD and have never seen it before so which of the three versions do i watch first

Seriously, if you haven't seen the movie at all, go the directors cut, which I would imagine is the longest version??

I have just purchased Close Encounters on BD and have never seen it before so which of the three versions do i watch first
The only time I've seen Dune was at the cinema a long time ago. Is the film on DVD a different version?

I'm not sure what you mean by HDDVD, is that the format ditched in favour of blu-ray?

Not a different version but everything is just so much clearer than the previous VHS and DVD versions i have owned.

Yes HDDVD was the competing HD format.

What about Flying Saucer Daffy with the Three Stooges?...... Sorry! Couldn't resist it.

There is a chapter called "Night Skies"

This was Spielbergs film about a family terrorised by aliens at their farmhouse

Rick Baker made a terrifying Alien. Then Speilberg dropped the entire project, re wrote it.. and it became E.T
Actually the Night Skies screenplay became the inspiration for ET, Poltergeist and Gremlins. Each film concentrated on a different aspect of the Night Skies plot with Poltergeist being the film that's probably most like its inspiration, with the aliens terrorising a family changed to ghosts. Gremlins took the idea of one good creature and several evil ones and ET only concentrated on the good alien who befriended the son in the orignal.

Oh.. I didn't know that! Is that in the book I mentioned? I haven't read it in a while.

I think it also mentioned he had a camera in one of the early shuttle missions taking footage for Night Skies!

Would love to have seen the scary alien that Rick Baker made!

EDITT!!

ah..... Good Old Wikipedia!
