Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

Is this movie (U.K. version) framed at 1:33 as DVDActive claim or 1:78 as the U.S. review sites are stating?

The back of the case indicates that the Blu-ray presentation is in 1.85:1, but it is actually in 1.78:1. Anyway, it is most definitely not 1.33:1.

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

As much as I loathe to link to the site, the screenshots here would seem to indicate 1.78:1. They don't usually crop their caps, but you never know.

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

Was I right to get the US version?
Presumably Warner have shortchanged the UK again and not included the 48 page book packaging?

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

One of my all time favourite films, saw it at the pics yesterday but the quality looked like an old video, definitely not the re-mastered version.
Really looking forward to buying the Blu ray but have a couple of noob questions I hope someone here might help with?
It seems there is a US version of this which is a digi-pak with a 44 page booklet enclosed
and this is the version I want.

1. Does anyone know if this will play okay on my UK PS3?

2. Also, would the US one be NTSC? Does this matter these days as although I really want the nicer packaging it's the quality of the film that matters the most.

3. Finally, can anyone recommend a good place to buy this from?

Apparently they spent a million dollars restoring this and its turned out fantastic from what I've read, can't wait to get my copy.

Many Thanks for any replies in advance

Well that depends what you mean by short changed. 17.99 for the region A 11.98 for the region B without the booklet I wouldn't say that was short changed we have a choice, I went for the uk region B.

1 it's region free so yes it will run on your UK PS3

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

Thanks for the reply lancerumbolt and please excuse my ignorance on the ntsc question

Thanks for the amazon price, you mentioned £17.99 for the US version.
I'd be willing to make the exception in this case and pay that little bit more for this title, is it best to get from ebay or is there a decent UK supplier for imports to not have the hassle of customs duty, handling charges etc..?

Cheers again

Yep I ordered this and Heat from Amazon.com and it worked out to 30 euros, order the same discs from UK would have been 32 euros and I lose the digibook.

Both discs appear to be the same pressing, Finnish subtitles available on both discs

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

I recieved mine from Amazon UK today. The picture is fantastic, the colours are so much better than my DVD version. It is not super sharp or over processed but looks quite natural. This is a must own disc!

I paid £16.99 for mine as I preordered before Play put the price up so I'm happy with mine.

Booklet sounds like one of those little thin things you get in so many disc packages.

This is a 48 page hardcover book filled with lots of colour stills that has a holder for the disc on the inside back cover. Very stylish

As for shortchanging - I was mainly referring to Warners continued problem of not giving UK buyers the same packages to buy - not really a question of price.

I have the 5 disc Blade Runner set , not out in the UK on Bluray.
There's also the 5 film Harry Potter boxset with additional discs of extras and games aswell as high quality souvenir book marks and other niceties.
The Dirty Harry boxset has a book and some other bits and bobs and of course there's the Wizard of Oz boxset I'm still waiting to be delivered.

Who needs the watch? Nobody . But its an awesome package that UK buyers cannot buy here

The UK sets of Potter and Harry are likely to be just the films in cases in a cardboard box

Ok point taken all well made, I have the book version of the matrix and Poltergeist I do prefer these but in this instance i thought i would just go for the standard region b simply because of cost.

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

I got this movie, The Green Mile and the Star Trek Generations 5-disc boxset on BD today and after watching Star Trek: Generations only got chance to check on the other two movies briefly (about 20 minutes each).

Both look to have great transfers but the North by Northwest one blew me away as I really didn't expect it to look as good as it does. It doesn't get off to a great start admittedly with a green Metro-Goldwyn roaring lion logo that is a horrid shade of vibrant green that carries part way into the opening credits. It's been a long time since I've seen this movie so I was starting to worry that my TV had gone faulty. Then the colour seeps in and apart from some shaky-looking credits the picture looks good. When the movie starts properly that's when you realise just how good it is and it's honestly like watching it for the first time; it's that good. I didn't see any print damage or dust speckles, it's all very clean looking with rich, deep not entirely natural-looking colours, particularly for the skin tones, but that's typical of movies of that time. I'm looking forward to watching it properly later on in the week.

Yes I like the book packaging but having looked into the Poltergeist US Bluray that appeared to be simply a packaging gimmick and there is actually no book included with that so the high price was hard to justify . Can you confirm there is no book?

The NBNW release was pictured before release showing that there really was a book included with it and thats what convinced me to pay the extra.

Its nothing like the huge 200 page hardcover book that UK Bluray buyers lost out on when Fox released Planet of the Apes here , but its still a nice little bonus.

Does The Matrix have a book or is just packaged like a book?

The matrix and poltergeist both have books, they are just not that good, you look once and then forget about it, it doesn't really impart that much information. Also if you are a little anal they stand a bit taller than normal blu rays. Don't get me wrong i actually like the look the packaging.

Even if Warner offered the same packaging here it'd be ruined with the British and Irish cert's on the cover. The US edition would still be the better option.

Re: North By Northwest Review Due?

Irony is that I bought the UK version cause I want the regular Blu-ray case (not the digibook). I am in the US! I have bought several foreign blu-rays because I wasn't happy with the US packaging.

I looked on Amazon , Play etc and the Poltergeist packaging looked like just a book but with no actual pages .

Can you give me some more details about the book.
How many pages etc.
Is it the same as the NBNW in that the actual case is the book with a holder on the inside back cover?

The pix I've seen gave the impression that if there was any additional material it was simply an insert inside an almost regular Bluray case

I might get Poltergeist after all

Oh it's most definately a book it's about 40 pages too. Check out the pics. It's exactly the same as North by Northwest.
