Saving dvd to hdd

What I have been doing is to copy TV progs to dvd and then take them away to work (overseas) and watch them on a dvd player. I also buy tv series and would need to copy them.
What I would like to do now is to copy the dvd's to a harddrive and then watch them on a laptop/ notebook.
I would appreciate any advice about how to do this.

Re: Saving dvd to hdd

Not wishing to comdone piracy or anything - You need to decrypt the dvd to enable to copy it/back it up to hard drive. Their are commerial and free tools. Some discs are harder than others due to extra security (sony mainly).
Free program DVD decrypter.

Auto Gordian Knot is a program I've used for this, with good results.

Avoid the whole issue of piracy and get something like an archos I've several gens myself and know of these PMP being taken into environments whch far exceed makers specs (war zones literally). They are drm compliant which means you can load it up with material from dvd's some firms will allow you to output to a tv anything you put on others (such as fox). won't. Also you can use it as a pvr and just take it away, no faffing about with PC and dvd's justy plug it into a tv at the other end and watch what you've record legally.

EDIT : As fro stuff you've record you can download then onto a pc via mini usb and watch from there
