Thumbs down HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

I was in my local HMV and I found the two row shelve of Blu ray movies has been haled. It's been replaced by DVD's and expensive box sets. So seems it won't be a cheap HD movie Christmas but instead they are pushing expensive box sets at £50+.

Plus all there movies on Blu Ray went up none at £10 now. Bottom line is that's hardly going to push a format? If Blu Ray takes over these £50 box sets on DVD will be flogged at a bootsale for £5 in a years time.

So looks like they are not pushing the format this Christmas. Surely they should be doing more? There's still far too many expensive players and new movies cost the earth.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

The bluray shelf in my local has just increased in size. Its almost got half a row to itslelf. On the opposite side are the PS3 games.

Shame they didnt have any of the £5 offers that some people were saying their stores had.

same here - I work in the City and its a pretty small HMV store and they have doubled (from 2 shelves to four) their BR stock, and they have quite a few under £12 (most of which I already have or dont want, but the choice is there)

At a guess I would reckon they have a choice of 400+ different BR discs to choose from , probably more

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

My local HMV has a good selection of titles.

But

Some of the prices are ridiculas and they vary from week to week.

Looked in there one week at Labyrinth at £12 one week and £20 the next

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

My local branch in Scarborough has one side of a row that goes down about half the length of the store, lots to choose from. On the other side are lots of expensive DVD box sets.

I agree with the odd pricing, I always check Amazon and HMV online before buying in HMV. WHSmiths can often be better than HMV on price.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

Sometimes their prices on new releases are OK. I had a £30 voucher which I was dreading spending, as I assumed I would automatically lose 40% of it's value my spending it at HMV instore However, I managed to get Drag Me To Hell and Fast and Furious for £16.95 each, which was only a quid or so each more than I would have paid online

Although I agree that for the most part their prices are a joke. £30 for a back catalogue title is not funny

They do seem to be expanding their instore selection though - I've got several local stores and they all seem to have more dedicated shelf space than ever before.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

I was in one of there larger stores and it still only had two shelves in a corner. I'm not sure why mines has cut back. At one point they had two rows with the ends all filled with cheap Blu Ray. Now it's half a shelve with the ends with the odd Blu Ray. Asda is worse only the big stores do them any local stores have none. Same with smaller video stores.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

What makes me laugh about HMV and is it's prices is that most people who have Bluray are early adopters and most of us frequent these sort of forums looking for info and bargains and would never seriously buy from them unless they have a deal on. They need to wise up why would I pay £25 for somethng I could get for half the price via the t'internet.

You think my local HMV was a bargin shop untill you saw the prices, there's hardly any choice of Blu-Ray but what they have you can but 30-40 of them.

I got a Blu Ray for half the price online so no wonder people use the internet. Blockbusters are fair priced.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

My local one at Bexleyheath has quite a lot and the Bluewater one is absolutely brimming with them. They must every title in that one. Still dont buy them there though. Far better bargains online. Even 2 for £25 dont sway me as they're never very new releases, and I can get the same discs on here in the classifieds for cheaper.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

3 HMV's where I live.

1. Massive store on 2 floors. You find the odd new blu ray release on the ground floor. All the rest are tucked away in a corner in the basement.

2. A fair size store over 2 floors again. Not one single blu on the ground floor. Only ever the odd new release dvd. Again, all the blus are in a corner upstairs.

3. The smallest one of the lot but has an actual blu ray chart section and blu ray versions of new releases sat next to the dvd version.

Seems to me that each store can set up their own displays and push whatever they like.

Sounds that way. The Blu Ray section is never too busy but you get the odd few looking at them. I imagine they make more money from DJ Hero/Rockband and DVD box sets. They have a massive gaming section.

I'd actually rather they had bigger stores now Zavvi is gone.

Portsmouth's one is similar, 100+ titles but fairly random placement, and all spine facing as well so you can't see any of the prices, very annoying! That being said most of the are £25 or £30 so i won't even bother looking anymore, the sooner the high street dies the better as far as i'm concerned.

My local Sainsbury's have a quite a selection of BD's in a two for £20 offer. Some good ones too, Close Encounters, Casino Royale, Departed, Blade Runner, Predator, can't remember any others.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

Plenty of Blu Ray in the Milton Keynes HMV. Sadly the prices are mostly as stupid as ever and very little in the 2 for £25 offer, would have bought Public Enemies, but couldn't see anything else in the other seemingly 6 or 7 titles in the offer.

HMV need to wise up a little surely in this day and age they should be price matching there online site.
I know it has some thing to do with tax,but other stores can do this why not HMV stores they must know that they are being beaten on price even from there own online operation.

Online is cheaper because it takes less staff to run it. As well as shop rental prices etc etc.

I don't know mate. HMV pay a LOT for the rent of the stores in towns. They also need to pay for the staffing of these stores and need to have high prices to make any money. It is a joke but HMV won't ever listen.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

My local store has about 150 different titles in two sections on the top floor.

I've seen some ridiculous prices in there (such as, Wall-E for £30 a couple of months ago) but a couple of weeks ago, I managed to pick up Gremlins for £13 and The Dark Knight for £15 (very reasonable IMO).

They have the discs filed face-up, so you can see the front cover and price.

They have shelves just above each of the two sections, promoting the latest releases, and also, in one of the sections, they have a demo player showing off the Blu-Ray picture quality.

I'm well aware of their random prices but I go there for discs because sometimes, I want something there and then, rather than waiting 3 days to save £7.

I also check Tesco for discs but they have an extremely small range - compared to HMV.

Re: HMV cutting back on Blu Ray?

I went into HMV Trocadero whilst in London on business last Friday and I had to chuckle when I went upstairs to the blu ray section and saw Quantum of Solace for £35.

HMV can't use the excuse of "we pay higher rent so we need to charge double the price". HMV also sell CDs, and these are only maybe a pound or two more than online retailers, not close to double the price. If a CD was 9.99 from amazon but £19.99 in HMV, they would never sell any. So I don't know what exactly there "strategy" is when it comes to blu ray, but its wrong in my opinion.
