I've had my eye on Optimum and the problem discs for quite some time.
What I've found is that, if a new film arrives, their discs tend to be very good.
If it's an old film, it depends on who created the master. I'm not sure that Optimum has ever created a bad master themselves. As an example, there are problems with Leon, but these aren't anything to do with Optimum - the disc looks the same the world over.
Then there's
Dead Man's Shoes in 1080/50i. I presume it was in 1080/50i for one of two reasons - either it was shot at 25fps (very unlikely) or a TV company co-funded the master (or had the master made in advance, and Optimum bought it off them).
Ran, I have no idea where that came from, but I'm not sure optimum ever make their own masters apart from new titles (I'm not sure that they can afford it, being a small company) - everything else they seem to source in.
The Deer Hunter looks like a pretty good disc. There's a problem getting the subs on the documentary, but you can get them. There's also a pitch problem, but I can't think of a studio that hasn't put out a disc with a pitch problem over the years.
