Which BBC programmes do you own on DVD?

Which of these BBC TV programmes / programmes shown on the BBC do you own on DVD or have ever bought/owned on DVD?

This poll is about programmes made or part made/financed by the BBC.

* note this poll is about DVDs and NOT about Blu-ray titles

(this is the second try at posting this poll and I'm trying with less options than before).

Please ignore all the options after Life on Mars everyone, I had more options to enter but I was getting very short of time and had to make sure that I entered all the options within the 2 minute time limit, so I just entered something quickly for those because if I had gone to 2 minutes there wouldn't have been any poll at all on this thread like what happened with my previous try.

I think you may have to re-think this one. This is a poll, hence you can only vote once & select one option.

Re: Which BBC programmes do you own on DVD?

You're right I meant to make it a multiple choice poll. I already failed to enter the options on a previous try at making this poll so that thread didn't have a poll at all, and as you can see I ran out of time entering all the valid options on this one, If I had entered them I'd have gone past the 2 minute limit . And it doesn't let you edit polls as far as I can tell (though I'm going to ask a moderator if it's possible).

But even though it's not a multiple choice poll, and if I can't edit it, if you own any of the above DVDs, please select one of the ones you own from the list.

a mod can recreate it for you if you ask, i had the same problem a while back, the timeout is a pain in the bum for long polls.

Only Only Fools & Horses 26 Disc set for me, love it.

I quite fancy Galapagos, Blue Planet and Dads Army, not much else though.

I think when I made this poll (which is still not multiple choice ), one of the reasons for it was so we could get an idea of how popular different BBC/BBC made/financed DVDs were and a you'd get a very rough idea of relatively how many Dvds need to be sold for a title for it to get a Blu-ray release. Though the fact that the poll isn't multiple choice isn't helping (I did ask for it to be changed ).

Not everything the BBC has put out will be suitable for a Blu-Ray release. As an example the new Dr Who has all been shot on standard def video until this year's specials. So I have all the box set DVDs of all the new Who but I have the Blu-Ray of Planet Of The Dead. A lot of HD titles are being released on both formats at around the same time. I will nearly always buy the BD over the DVD.

Cheers

I didn't realise Who was not HD until this year. That saves me waiting for the Blu seasons then. I am getting Torchwood on Blu though. S2 and S3 just needs to be cheaper.

I think even standard definition shot releases would benefit from being released on Blu-ray. 28 Days Later was mostly shot with a PAL DV camcorder and that's on Blu-ray. Things shot on Super 16 film are released on Blu-ray, even though the BBC doesn't think Super 16 is good enough for HDTV.

A standard definition PAL DVD will be upscaled by a player to about 5x the number pixels (for full HD TVs), and on current HDTVs, depending on viewing distance this will make any problems with the encode stand out more. Also I think DVDs like Blu-ray are encoded with 4:2:0 colour, so will look worse when upscaled 5x. And DVDs use mpeg2 at a lower bitrate than Blu-ray. With Blu-ray SD titles could be stored with higher quality, at a higher bitrate (so less visible compression artefacts on HDTVs) and let you have more episodes of something on one disc, so would take up less discs & space. I'd rather buy a series on 1 or 2 Blu-ray discs than the same one on 5-6 DVDs, especially if the Blu-ray version was higher quality & had a higher bitrate and was about the same price.

I agree that standard def material would most likely benefit from a BD release. As you say they would have a better bitrate and there would be fewer discs. I think it'll be a very long time before we see such releases if at all. I think the average person in the street is already confused enough as it is without such releases to muddy the waters further. In short they'd expect the main content of a BD to be HD rather than SD.

It's a subject that's been discussed quite a bit on the Forums but I'm not aware of any plans to release all SD BDs.

nwgarratt

Who was made in standard def because of the expense involved. Now that it's a huge success they decided to go HD. All live action Who will be HD from Planet Of The Dead onwards.I don't know if the animated story Dreamland is SD or HD. It should be broadcast sometime after the next live action Who.

Torchwood has been HD from the start as it has far fewer sfx shots. The Sarah Jane Adventures are in HD from the third series which is now being shown on BBC1 on Thursdays and Fridays.

All the best
Bri
