Thumbs up Anti-Christ - UK DVD/Blu-Ray Release Date!

Hi,

For anyone who's interested, Lars Von Trier's explicit, violent, and adult psychological drama ANTI-CHRIST starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, is out on UK DVD and Blu-Ray format, from Artificial Eye, on 29th November 2009.

The film will be released uncut and uncensored, on a single disc version, in the full theatrical 2.35:1 anamorphic cinemascope format, on both formats on the same day, with RRP's of £15-99 for the DVD and £19-99 for the Blu-Ray version, though these are likely to be much cheaper, closer to release date.

The sound will be DD5.1 on the DVD, and a similar form on Blu-Ray. (I don't think a DTS sound-mix has been created for this film, as the DTS logo never appears on the cinema prints' end-credits.)

There have been no specific details confirmed regarding extras, but there is likely to be:

- an audio commentary of some kind
- a featurette on the controversy surrounding the film, and its censorship treatment around the world
- on-screen interviews of some kind, with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe and director Lars Von Trier
- a featurette of some kind, on the movie's "meaning"
- material of some kind about the film's reception in the UK, comprising of brief comments from public interviewee's from the film's UK Premiere!

Extras are likely to be identical on both DVD and Blu-Ray releases, with the Blu-Ray extras being in SD form-only.

Having seen this at the cinema I'm not sure if I would ever see it again, it's one of those films that you not say it was good or bad just an experience.

Hi Shoka,

You're welcome! If you are easily offended, or disturbed, then be warned, ANTI-CHRIST is very, very shocking by many modern 18 certificate film standards! In some cases, it makes SALO look like Play School!

If you see people leave the cinema, or you end-up leaving part-way through, don't feel too ashamed. You're not the first, and won't be the last!

Seriously, I didn't actually think Salo was all that bad, I've seen worse Japanese anime, not sure my fiance will be keen on seeing it tomorrow with me though. I just got a text from her "Do you want to see The Proposal tomorrow night?". Sure, I've got a proposal for you, Antichrist, you'll love it

Why was it bad? what was bad about it? this is a discussion forum not a random 2 word post forum, looking at some of your other posts they all seem to be the same 2-3 word non-conversational posts. Best to elaborate and encourage discussion instead of borderline spamming.

Sorry to be a bit harsh, but I don't feel posts like that add any value to a conversation about a film that was the talk of Cannes and has been hugely successful for the distributor.

The first 'act' in the first few minutes was one of the most amazing pieces of cinema I've ever seen......

Re: Anti-Christ - UK DVD/Blu-Ray Release Date!

Looks like the Danes are getting it in a coupla weeks.

Køb Antichrist / Antichrist (2009) - Blu-ray film - EAN:5704028009810 - moviezoo.dk

Looks like they get raw deal with prices though - 200DKK is £24! ouch.

Will hold fire til January rather than importing at that price!

Exclamation Re: Anti-Christ - UK DVD/Blu-Ray Release Date!

Hi Folks,

Unfortunately, most Netherlands-territory DVD's do not subtitle the extras with English subs. However, as the film was made and recorded in English, the extras (bar any text-screen features) may well be in English also. But with Lars Von Trier being Danish, the extras may just as likely, also be in Danish.

A Russian PAL-formatted, single-disc DVD release is now out, but has forced Russian subs. Audio is English 5.1, with Russian DTS or Russian 5.1 options. No extras though, but it is uncut, anamorphic 2.35:1 and uncut.

Ultimately, though, it may be best to wait until early-Jan 2010, when the UK release is out, and then we can compare the different releases in full. Rumours of a 2-disc release sound interesting! However, I've not been able to locate any further information on what this may contain.

If anyone can supply links or other info, it would be much appreciated.

Exclamation Re: Anti-Christ - UK DVD/Blu-Ray Release Date!

Hi Again,

According to Play.com's ANTICHRIST DVD listing here, the UK DVD release, which is out on 11th January 2010, features the same extras as the DANISH DVD release mentioned above, namely:

- the film, in English DD 5.1
- audio commentary with director Lars Von Trier
- interviews with Charlotte Gainsbourg & Willem Dafoe
- featurette: The Evil of Woman
- featurette: The Visual Style of Antichrist
- featurette: The Make-Up Effects and Props of Antichrist
- featurette: The Three Beggars
- featurette: Eden
- featurette: Confessions about Anxiety
- featurette: The Sound and Music of Antichrist
- featurette: The Antichrist Test
- featurette: Behind The Test
- featurette: Antichrist: Chaos Reigns at the Cannes Film Festival

No details as to whether we will get a DTS soundtrack (though as I mentioned in the very first post in this thread, the film has no DTS logo in the credits!), nor if it's a single or double disc release.

It was the "Danish" extras that was mentioned...

Just to set things straight:
Denmark = Danish
Netherland = Dutch

Unless you import the Danish DVD, Christmas won't be coming early, as the UK version on Blu-Ray isn't out until early January next year! And there's still no confirmation that the Danish extras are English-language friendly or have English-subtitles (if applicable).

This might be a daft question but is the infamous scene in this film genuine i.e. did she actually do that to herself? If so, WFT!?

A very daft question, I'm afraid!

Of course she didn't actually mutilate herself! And nor did Willem Dafoe end-up with a broken man-handle either! Sheesh! That would be madness!

Both scenes were performed using porn-actor stunt-doubles, and with very clever prosthetics and make-up! No harm came to any real, living human being!

Looks like the French release is 1080i, so very likely that the UK one will be too

Oh well, I'll still be buying it. It's an awesome film.

Well I enjoyed it, and it does still manage to look stunning at times. Especially the earlier scenes and some of the more surreal scenes. Some of the featurettes are quite insightful too (most especially 'The Evil of Woman' and 'Confessions about Anxiety').

Hi,

Just a few notes regarding the UK "Antichrist" DVD release:

1) The film is totally, 100% uncut and uncensored, and in anamorphic 2.35:1, which is the same format it was shown in the cinemas.

2) The film also includes a DTS 5.1 soundtrack, which is NOT listed on the DVD packaging, but can be located in the DVD's "Setup" menu.

3) The extras are identical to the 2-disc French and Netherlands releases: the only difference being, that in the UK everything is on 1 disc, whereas the 2-disc versions have the film on Disc 1 and the extras on disc 2. Thankfully, the picture and sound on the UK DVD are jaw-dropping! Check out the hi-def feel of the opening black-and-white sequence, for proof!

4) There is a featurette on the DVD and Blu-Ray showing how the "extreme mutilation" scenes were performed with special effects. Ditto the animal material too. Neither is family-friendly.

Thanks Pooch.

Have you seen the BD at all? How's the PQ? from the sounds of the DVD I'm guessing it's going to be pretty good albeit 1080i

Not seen it, but the picture should be exceptional, bearing in mind the film was only released in 2009, and the DVD version being so good. If you're really worried, I'd simply rent it on Blu-Ray before you buy it. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I don't own a Blu-Ray player.

The film was shot at 25fps, hence the 1080i. Non digital film prints and 1080p versions have been slowed down.

Btw, PQ is exceptional.

I watched this on Friday night. Not sure I "enjoyed it" but it certainly holds your attention right to the end. It truly is a shocking film and I made sure that the windows in my kids bedroom are firmly locked

All in all its definitely worth watching, if just to be shocked. Not sure I would want to see it again though!
