Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

I was not going to buy this on previous reports of the amount of grain, I hate grain !! .. I got as far as HMV and caved in as it was only £12.99 instore. Plus it is a classic.

I think its an excellent transfer and the reports of the grain are over exaggerated. I dont use any noise reduction, live colour or contrast enhancer at all on my TV and the picture was fantastic for a film that is 25 years old. Well impressed. At that price it is a must buy I think.

Plus how cool was Bill Murray in this ..

Good review up at DVD times:

Judging by the comparison shots, this transfer looks utterly fantastic! Can't wait to watch this tonight (presuming it arrived this morning of course!).

I have the 1999 R1 DVD and was always pleased with the look of it but the BD is miles better still. Not sure I would get it as I have seen GB enough times as it is.

I don't want to start getting discs just because they look really good. I did it with DVD and have unwatched discs now. I also have started getting a backlog on BD too.

It looked great on my display - nice detail, vibrant colours and some rather lovely film grain - beautiful.

Excellent job, Sony.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Personally I thought the grain was a bit heavy. I appreciate what people say about film naturally being grainy and I'm all for it if that's how the film looked originally. It does seem a little excessive here and there, especially in darker scenes and contrast can be a bit hot too. However, after about 20 minutes you just think "it's Ghostbuster, in high def!" and get over it and settle into the film. Certainly the most detailed transfer there's ever been with great sound and a decent amount of features too.

Would have liked a tad less grain though - watch Black Rain on blu, it loos amazing and that's what I was hoping for GB.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

I have no problem with the grain or the few blurry spots near the beginning, but is anyone else disappointed with the extras? The silhouette commentary from the first release is missing. It's not a big deal, but I liked it. In comparison to The Italian Job's extras (90min making of doc, which is fantastic) the extras here are a bit crap (making of the video game and ecto-1 featurette )!

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Watched it last night, what a treat! This is a textbook example of exactly how blu-ray should be done. Use the best source material available and make the transfer as transparant as possible to that source.

Have to applaud Sony on this one, as with such a high concentration of the public wanting every film they see to look like a pixar movie, it's very daring to actually put something out that looks exactly how it's supposed to look.

Regarding the contrast boosting issues, I have to say I prefer the look of the blu-ray to the 1999 DVD. I did a direct comparison and the blu-ray blows it out of the water. The 99 DVD is just too dark. Since the cinematographer had an input in this transfer, I think people have to accept that this is how it's supposed to look.

Watch the PiP Slimer track. It's got loads of brand new interviews with a lot of folks who took part.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Watched mine last night.
Excellent, pristine & untouched transfer.
Can't understand the grain haters getting worked up, the grain is hardly noticable and very natural looking.
The colours are vibrant and make for wonderfull viewing.
The sound is very 80s in parts but explodes into life in others.
The sound of the proton packs in the lift is unbelievable.

Well done Sony.......
The rebuilt Ecto1 looks

Watched this last night and was really impressed. I don't know where the 'grain heavy' comments came from

Yeah there's some but its looks 'right' and I thought the transfer was great.

Few blurry shots (long distance mainly) but never detracted. Plus its Ghostbusters

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

I watched Ghostbusters on BD over the weekend. What a great movie. Loved the Slimer mode picture-in-picture feature, it's one of the more entertaining ones I've seen.

Despite all the horror stories I've been reading about the amount of grain in the picture, with the Theatre mode on my Sony D3000 HDTV I can't say I really noticed it when I watched in on my Sony BDP-S350 player. Even though I knew it was there, I never once found it distracting and within a few minutes of watching it I was even thinking about it. The picture quality looked a lot better than I expected, facial detail was excellent, you could see every pitted pore on Bill Murray's face for example, and colours looked natural. The picture quality by no means reference material but it's the best I've ever seen it on DVD or TV. I'm happy.

I did try the movie on my PS3 and even with the same Theatre mode enabled, the grain was a little more obvious, especially when chapter skipping as the picture would freeze for a split-second. Sorry if that like a promotion for Sony products but I like their stuff!

The extras are good overall, the aforementioned Slimer mode being by far the best, as the others are a bit on the short side. One disappointment was the omission of the Ray Parker Jr. "Ghostbusters" video.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

It isn't one for grain haters like me but I forgave it because it is an ancient, legend of a film.

The transfer is brilliant bar the grain that is extremely heavy in places, for example in one dark scene where you see the Ecto1 driving across a large bridge at night with Ray and Winston in.

Some scenes with those evil monster dogs just look awful as they don't blend in with their surroundings at all, especially when the dog is chasing Louis across the street out of his hotel.

The extras are quite good too. The Making of Ecto1 was nice, and the making of the Ghostbusters-Video Game (great game btw) was enjoyable.

Waiting for GB2 now

That scene has never looked right though even on the various DVD versions. Think its more a limitation of the CGI then a transfer.

I remember noticing the same thing on the DVD. The resolution of HD also makes scenes like that stand out more too and make it even more fake.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

So there are mixed reviews over the grain, if I'm right was it at the initial scene at the library?

I think in all honesty natural grain is all down to how it was shot. I mean I watched First Blood & it's excellent on th whole for PQ but some scenes in the forest were worse than a pirate VHS copy, I think it can't be helped.

I think Predator & Robocop have been slated but I can understand why Predator will have heavy grain due to the natural setting/environment of the film.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Threads used to get locked for even mentioning grain, it is nice in a way that this can be talked about now... I knew it wasn't just me that would feel this way in the end.

Anyway.. I agree that the film does have some high detail in it in places. It could be higher, but not bad really. Rather than a remake, I would prefer them just to redo some of the effects in this movie like they did in Star Trek original series.

There is also a contrast boost in this movie that is eliminating some of the details on some scenes.
