Steelbooks Suck!

Every Steelbook I've ever ordered has arrived dented and bent. Every one !

The latest one, Star Trek from play.com is a joke. It looks like it's been hit with a hammer.

Of course I'd love to send it back for a replacement but I refuse to throw it in the black hole that is play.com returns dept. I have never in 7 years had an item I've returned to play actually been received. Miraculously they just seem to disappear into thin air....

Also, you can't put two steelbooks next to each other or they rub and damage themselves...and they are awkward to open because the latch doesn't flex.

Steelbooks - why do we do it to ourselves?

It's masochism !

Kudos

LOL

cracking title!

Me I love em and not one of them has turned up dented I wouldn't go out of my way to get one and pay silly money but if there is a choice then I'll go for the steelbook every time.

and it also sounds like your issue is with Play not the steelbook and surely you exaggerate when you say it looks like it's been hit by a hammer!

I can see photo evidence being posted at lunchtime...and you can decide!

I totally agree. They get damaged easily and the clips holding them shut don't seem to last very long and yet people still insist on paying more than a standard case!

I'd prefer a few design changes made on them...

1/ I'd like them to slide open like a cigar box.
2/ I'd prefer the sort of coating that doesn't come off.
3/ I'd like the interior to support them better so that they don't flex so much to bend easily.

But isn't that the point? People do have a choice, me I choose to but them if they are available if not then no big deal.

The OP chose to buy a steelbook, he didn't have to, it got damaged which is more down to how it's been shipped and maybe play but not the steelbook.

You're a steelbook apologist

I agree I didn't have to buy one, I actually ordered this disc ages ago when play only had the steelbook version, the standard case version then came along a little later, along with a massive price hike for the steelbook (though play didn't increase the pre-ordered price £17.99 vs £22.99)

I agree play should also have packaged it better seeing as they are always damaged (at least for me).

In fact ideally they should have a plastic protective case for the steelbook itself....

Kudos

Is there any reason why you still order from Play then? If you have had so much trouble with them, perhaps an alternative supplier is what you need.

How was your Trek steelbook packaged? as mine came in a cardboard case instead of the usual jiffy bag and it was mint.

It's funny how the things which attract us previously, hold absolutely no allure anymore. You could apply that to a few things in life, but since we're talking about steelbooks here, I used to collect DVD steelbooks like they were going out of fashion. Wised up, sold them all and now can't be bothered whatsoever with blu-ray ones. The steelbooks used to have better artwork than the normal DVD and in the BD realm, that seems to be the opposite IMO.

Order them from Amazon where possible (and not IndigoStarFish) because they pack them properly.

To be honest, I have found that all the budget sellers (usually channel islands based) are terrible at packing heavy items.

I buy a lot of boxsets, which are heavy and quite delicate on the corners, but the likes of Play, HMV, Asda, Sendit, The Hut etc still only send them in a jiffy bag.

I had one copy of the big Lord of the Rings set (weighs about 1Kg) litterally hanging out of the bag. Every corner was bashed in and the jiffy bag was riddled with tears where the box had tried to punch it's way through.

Wherever possible for boxsets and steelbooks I try to stick to Amazon.

Cheers,

Nigel

My first ever steelbook arrived today in the shape of Band of Brothers from Play.com.

You guessed it, a great big dent in the side

Can't say the steelbook attraction myself. I'm the same with dual language covers- doesn't really bother me- with me it always the movie that counts. I saw someone over on the trading forums the other day trying to buy a Blu in normal packaging cheap so he could keep his steelbook version intact!!!

Just open it and watch the movie. That's what home cinema is all about.

My steelbook has been delivered to my friend who collects on behalf of me until I return to London. No idea in what condition it has been delivered.

I'm not trying to rub salt in your wounds but you should have gone with Amazon. I did notice recently that several people were ordering BoB from Play, basically because you could get Quidco. I actually thought this quite foolish given Plays history of packaging everything in Jiffybags.

Thats why I ordered mine from Amazon. Everything I have ever ordered from them, that is above the size of a standard DVD/BD, has been shipped in a well padded box. Something to remember for the future. Whats more important; peace of mind or saving a few pennies?

Was that from Amazon or IndigoStarFish. Some of the stuff sold by Amazon is provided by there partner which just uses jiffy bags.

Everything I order from Real Amazon has come in cardboard boxes.

My play star trek steelbook was in a thin cardboard box, but no dents, in fact all Blus I've got from play for a while have been packed like that, not in jiffys. Still went for BoB from amazon though as larger items I wasn't sure about.

I hate the things. I only have two now - Crouching Tiger BD and Kingdom of Heaven. Sure they look nice but they scratch too easily and all the ones I have seen are a pain to get the discs out. I used to keep the steelbooks in the original cellophane but that soon tore to pieces. I would have gone for CTHD in a standard case when it came out.

The BOB tin is not a steelbook but my DVD tin got the printing scratched off the bottom from the shelf it was on. I ended up putting a bit of paper under the BD version to protect it.

If the orders come from Indigo, they will still come in jiffy bags. Amazon uses cardboard.

Have to go along with the majority here, I always choose amazon or HMV over play, not just for the packaging but for overall level of service.

I ordered my first ever steelbook from play yesterday (Terminator Salvation) so much touching of woody items will ensue.

As an aside guys, could it not also be a disgruntled postal worker who manhandles your package like a stress ball not be a contributing factor.

I got my first ever BR steelbook (Highlander) recently of a fellow forum member. Packaged really well so no dents. Pretty cool case.

Today I received my BOB (£17.99) Steel Tin dent free too (ordered from Amazon as more reliable than play with packaging).

OK they stand out on my shelf and don't look as neat lined up when compared to all the other US (slim) cases I have but I swear, even those cases are different. There must be at least 2-3 different US cases width wise. You've got slim, slimmer and ultra slim

In summary, i'm liking the Steelbooks and may purse others (though i'm never paying silly money) in due course.
