Sony BDP-S350 plays with black stripes on top and bottom

Am playing a Blu-Ray on the Sony via component cables to Mitsubishi HC1500 projector. Projector is 16:9 and Sony blu-ray is set up to work with a 16:9 TV so everything should be ok. Still when I play a blu-ray disk I get significant black stripes at the top and bottom - so it is not using the full 16:9 screen. When I am in Blu-ray setup page it does use the whole screen. Any ideas?

Your film will not be 16:9 then.

Will be a 2.35:1 (etc) ratio movie then it's normal and the way it was originally shot.

Most films are shot using an aspect ratio of approx 2.4:1(is sometimes says so on back of box)
16/9 equates to an aspect ratoio of approx 1.8:1, hence the black lines at the top and bottom of the screen.

Thanks everyone! The box doesn't say anything but looking at the specs online it is indeed 2.35:1. Measuing the projection on the wall it is 2.25:1 although I guess that is within margin of error.

How annoying that the world can't just standardize no 16:9!
