28 Days/Weeks Later dual pack on Blu Ray

Just received this from Play and it comes with two discs, each film on a disc with extras housed in a normal Blu ray case with an embossed slipcase.

I've had a quick look at both films on my ps3 and thought the PQ on 28 days was almost unwatchable. I use to own the dvd a few years back and vaguely remembered it being pretty crap like 'Dog Soldiers' (something to do with the film used!?!). It maybe that I'm use to Blu now but it's definately the worse i've seen and i've not seen 'Escape from NY' yet. AQ is very good though. 28 weeks looks fairly good although a bit patchy in places. Again AQ is very good.

I've not watched both all the way through yet and haven't looked at the extras so this is only a quick check. I think it would be cheaper to buy the dvd versions and still get the same PQ but obviously not the improved AQ.

28 Days Later was shot on PAL video (except for the final scene), meaning that it will never look any better than the PAL DVD.

It's was really a lame move by FOX to put it out on Blu-ray before all the real HD back catalogue, but you know how they will try to milk you if they can get away with it.

I believe 28 days later was shot on DV. The Blu Ray is better than the DVD but not by much.

Re: 28 Days/Weeks Later dual pack

Acording to IMDB:

Film negative format (mm/video inches)
Video (PAL)
35 mm (final scene only)
8 mm (flashback scene)

Cinematographic process
D1 (4:4:2) (master format)
DV (4:2:0)
Spherical (final scene only)
Super 8 (flashback scene)

Anyways.. thanks for the comparison screenshots..

Amazing movie and it really is too bad it looks like crap, but that is what the director wanted mmmmm'kay

Re: 28 Days/Weeks Later dual pack

Glad someone else noticed the poor PQ for 28 days later. I spent the first half of the film thinking there was something wrong with my projector, and tinkering with it . Still enjoyed watching it again, just need to catch 28 weeks later on SKY HD!

The camera was only SD quality so the fact that there is even a little difference is still pretty good.

Re: 28 Days/Weeks Later dual pack

I've just watched the first 15 minutes of 28 days later and was seriously disappointed - I can't remember the DVD being this bad!

It has all the appearance of one of those (presumably) 70's horror movies that you stumble across during a late night channel surf on Sky.

I can't believe that Fox have the audacity to display the "Blu-ray 1080p" logo on the packaging. I for one feel seriously ripped off with this purchase.

What the hell, it's going back in the post tomorrow - it's not Play.com's problem, but as a consumer I don't believe that this product could in any way be considered Hi Def.

But they were shot with 35mm film which has much higher resolution than 1080p. HD DVD (and Blu Ray) is actually downscaled from the film negatives.

Just been in touch with Play, explained my dissatisfaction, and they've agreed to take the 28 Days/Weeks back as a return.

Re: 28 Days/Weeks Later dual pack

Ha ha - i went to the cinema on the opening day to see this (28 days) and although i loved the film, I was peeved at the PQ and complained afterwards and they eventually gave me free tickets!
Didn't realise at the time it was a stylistic choice!

Re: 28 Days/Weeks Later dual pack

Just put 28 days on and the PQ actually looks worse than the upscaled DVD

It will be going back tomorrow
