Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

Virtually every violent scene has been cut in some way (to achieve an R rating).

--------------SPOILERS HERE----------

The shootout in the plane, the shooting of the skydiving kids, the fight in the cave, the shooting of Frank, all suffered cuts of a few seconds each, mainly for things like close ups of bullet impacts, the footage of the kid being shot in the back was brutally close up, you can pretty much see his torso get blown to bits in the workprint.

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

I have a copy of the workprint - it's in pretty bad shape but I'd love to see it restored. The extra scenes and dialogue are interesting. Like when the 2 baddies first see Tucker & Walker through binoculars and they say "We got two heroes, we'll meet them at the top". Theatrical version cuts to the plane where Qualin comes out of the plane door ("Suits, socks $100,000,000 the usual stuff" scene). But in the WP version the two baddies do meet them at the top and take them hostage. Loads of bits like this.

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

Would love to see a unrated version of both Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, if Renny Harlin was willing to do it.

Though I remember reading (or hearing perhaps on the Cliffhanger DVD commentary) that Harlin said something along the lines of "this was when I was going through my gore / blood phase", perhaps indicating that he doesn't think like that any more as a filmmaker, therefore perhaps would not be interested in pursuing uncut version(s)...

Whats interesting though is that we have Rambo (2008) released uncut as an "R" and "18" in the US and UK respectively, and that film contains much more in the way of graphic violence. I just wonder if a recut was submitted, it would pass though now under similar certificates?

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

Looks like 'Cliffhanger' is being re-released on Blu-ray in Jan.2010

New release Jan.2010
Cliffhanger Ws Dub Sub Ac3 Dol Blu-ray US Import: Amazon.co.uk: DVD

Original release 2008
Cliffhanger [Blu-ray] [1992]: Amazon.co.uk: Sylvester Stallone, Vyto Ruginis, Max Perlich, Craig Fairbrass, Caroline Goodall, Leon, Rex Linn, John Finn, Ralph Waite, Zach Grenier, Denis Forest, John Lithgow, Michelle Joyner, Jeff McCarthy, Kim Robill

Last time it had a 15 rating. This new disc indicates an 'R' (restricted) rating.

Perhaps its the uncut version coming in January (yet again a US import). If so then one would presume the rear channel sound fault (i.e. channels wrong way round) will have been fixed too.

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

Hopefully this time the Blu-ray transfer will be a good one. I confess this has long since been a favourite action movie of mine. Seem to remember picture quality was reference class on laserdisc.

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

So long as the transfer is decent and no audio shananigans, i'll be pickig up this one.

Seem to end up watching it every time it's on tv (seems to appear on the Beeb twice a year every year) to rude not to.

One of my fave Stallone movies

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

Should really be a golden opportunity for Harlin to put together the uncut version he submitted to the studio (but was rejected).

A shame this has never seen the light of day in any official form.

Re: Cliffhanger IS uncut

Back when Harlin could actually make a decent film. Saw 12 Rounds recently... Oh dear.

3.5/5 PQ on both reviews.

Was kind of hoping this would have another Sony knockout (4.5/5 ish) transfer.

Will stick pick up at the right time.

Is the reversed speaker issue sorted out in the US version I wonder? If so I'll pick it up

The picture looks a little soft even in some of those screencaps.
