Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

I was not going to buy this on previous reports of the amount of grain, I hate grain !! .. I got as far as HMV and caved in as it was only £12.99 instore. Plus it is a classic.

I think its an excellent transfer and the reports of the grain are over exaggerated. I dont use any noise reduction, live colour or contrast enhancer at all on my TV and the picture was fantastic for a film that is 25 years old. Well impressed. At that price it is a must buy I think.

Plus how cool was Bill Murray in this ..

Good review up at DVD times:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content/id...stbusters.html

Judging by the comparison shots, this transfer looks utterly fantastic! Can't wait to watch this tonight (presuming it arrived this morning of course!).

I have the 1999 R1 DVD and was always pleased with the look of it but the BD is miles better still. Not sure I would get it as I have seen GB enough times as it is.

I don't want to start getting discs just because they look really good. I did it with DVD and have unwatched discs now. I also have started getting a backlog on BD too.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

It looked great on my display - nice detail, vibrant colours and some rather lovely film grain - beautiful.

Excellent job, Sony.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Personally I thought the grain was a bit heavy. I appreciate what people say about film naturally being grainy and I'm all for it if that's how the film looked originally. It does seem a little excessive here and there, especially in darker scenes and contrast can be a bit hot too. However, after about 20 minutes you just think "it's Ghostbuster, in high def!" and get over it and settle into the film. Certainly the most detailed transfer there's ever been with great sound and a decent amount of features too.

Would have liked a tad less grain though - watch Black Rain on blu, it loos amazing and that's what I was hoping for GB.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

I have no problem with the grain or the few blurry spots near the beginning, but is anyone else disappointed with the extras? The silhouette commentary from the first release is missing. It's not a big deal, but I liked it. In comparison to The Italian Job's extras (90min making of doc, which is fantastic) the extras here are a bit crap (making of the video game and ecto-1 featurette )!

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Watched it last night, what a treat! This is a textbook example of exactly how blu-ray should be done. Use the best source material available and make the transfer as transparant as possible to that source.

Have to applaud Sony on this one, as with such a high concentration of the public wanting every film they see to look like a pixar movie, it's very daring to actually put something out that looks exactly how it's supposed to look.

Regarding the contrast boosting issues, I have to say I prefer the look of the blu-ray to the 1999 DVD. I did a direct comparison and the blu-ray blows it out of the water. The 99 DVD is just too dark. Since the cinematographer had an input in this transfer, I think people have to accept that this is how it's supposed to look.

Watch the PiP Slimer track. It's got loads of brand new interviews with a lot of folks who took part.

Re: Anyone else buying Ghostbusters on blu-ray?

Watched mine last night.
Excellent, pristine & untouched transfer.
Can't understand the grain haters getting worked up, the grain is hardly noticable and very natural looking.
The colours are vibrant and make for wonderfull viewing.
The sound is very 80s in parts but explodes into life in others.
The sound of the proton packs in the lift is unbelievable.

Well done Sony.......
The rebuilt Ecto1 looks
