Star Trek Blu-ray Review

Reviewed by Alan Paterson, 20th November 2009
‘Star Trek’(2009) materialises on Region free Blu-ray with a first class 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer framed in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The movie looks pristine with vibrant colour, punchy contrast and a pin sharp image throughout.
The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio makes full use of the surround channels and LFE during the space battles as Michael Giacchino’s score provides slam to underline the action. Amid all of the sonic warfare, dialogue is kept clear throughout.
An extensive range of extras including an enthusiastic comm. Track and many Featurettes will warm the cockles of many a Trekker’s heart.
As for the movie, it’s sheer entertainment from start to finish. For Star Trek fans it’s a chance to meet up with old friends. For a general audience, it’s a thrilling Sci-Fi blockbuster. May its new timeline live long and prosper!

Watched this last night and was astounded at how good this movie was, in all three aspects.
I am not really a lover of Star Trek movies in general, although will confess to enjoying the last three produced.
This is by far the best Star Trek movie ever made and I would give this blu ray a very rare 10/10 for content, 10/10 for picture and 10/10 for sound.
I really coud not find ANY fault whatsover, so therefore 10 out of 10 all round
Thoroughly entertaining throughout and recommended viewing.

I couldn't agree more. I saw it at the cinema but enjoyed it even more at home on Blu.

For me the outstanding performances were Chris Pine (Kirk) & Karl Urban (Bones) that just seem to nail the characters without even looking like they were trying.

Top notch audio and PQ round-off what is simply my favourite Star Trek movie by far and the best film overall I've seen in a long while.

Gonna watch this for the first time this weekend, so will post a review soon. Really looking forward to it given the review.

EDIT:

Well spanner in the work from me, but only slightly. From my Trekkie POV, I didnt like it that much as a Trek film. Seemed a bit too Hollywood (oops I dropped my gun and its fallen off the ledge now ) and not enough classic Trek, but I wont ramble.

From purely a new Movie POV, generously enjoyable. PQ top notch, SQ top notch, and the action and effects were all great. The acting was good and having Nimoy in there made a big difference for me. Even though I was distracted at times by my Trekkie past, I still enjoyed the film a great deal.

7/10 from me. I'd have given it a little more, but you cant fight the Trekkie inside

My BD arrived earlier in the week (a little earlier than anticipated...thank you Playdotcom!) and I couldn't wait to get home and watch it. The wife had taken the boys to see the film on it's release and had told me how much she enjoyed it which is unusual for her as she isn't really into this kind of film.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, PQ was superb as was the soundtrack...had the walls shaking quite a few times, as I'm sure my neighbours can confirm..

My eldest two are coming over today for the week-end and we will be ordering pizza in tonight to settle down and watch it again, it's that good.
Highly recommended.

Saw it last night, thought it was just great entertainment. Was odd in as much that so many scenes, and I mean a huge ammount had light(lensflare and everything else) shinning in the lens of the camera..there to glue it all together I suppose. Was just a fantastic reboot of the series.

You take that back right now

No way I would put it up with WOK. It certainly pulls away from the generic plots of the last few films (which are simple one watch entertainment pieces set in space, and could have been done by anyone), but it lacks the feel of a true Trek film IMO.

Its more War of the Worlds/Tranformers/Terminator Salvation than Star Trek IMO. Thoroughly entertaining, but only really a Trek film in the same way a family car painted in green camo is an army vehicle IMO.

I watched it again a couple nights ago though, says it all really

no way , best one My best was WOK but not now , no way can you put Star trek in the same league as weak films such as War of the Worlds,Terminator Salvation..

I think if we seen a few of the Old School Monsters like this one

More people would of liked the film

You keep saying "Trekkie"...if you really were into Star Trek in a way you claim, you would know it's "TrekkER...

I love a good debate. I grew up on TNG and DS9, the 'alternate reality' plot as been done to death so for the me plot was as thin as the other films I mentioned. I just feel like they wanted to do something they wanted, and couldnt keep it consistent with the normal Trek Universe, so they just pulled the old alternate time line out . . . . . . again. Albeit in a fairly decent way.

It was only a nit pick, but what can I say, it didnt feel like Star Trek to me. Sure in many ways it was better, but I really want a Trek film to come out that feels like it did when we watched WOK for the first time.

PS, sometime I miss the effects when they were done with models

This is one of the few films I went to the cinema to see, glad to hear that the PQ and SQ are very good on the blu-ray it'll have to be added to my collection over the weekend.

It's an OK sorta film from the Hollywood point of view - lots of "kick ass" testosterone filled, act-before-you-think, laws of physics don't apply here, type of action.
Usual failing with all Star Treks after TOS, in that it went from a "One World" scenario to a "One U.S. World" scenario. No Africans - just African Americans, no Asians, just American Asians, even Vulcan has school bullies like in the Simpsons - oh well...
Good PQ and AQ - could use it as a demo for your Home Theatre setup to impress the neighbours if you haven't already bored them with brain-dead crap like Trannies 2.

I'm a fan of the Original Crew Movies (not series)...

With PQ and SQ excellent on the Blu Ray and the fact that this film made a mint; a success as far as all involved in producing it are concerned. Great news for some as there's sure to be more movies

Personally it was a Turkey in the same vein as say The Phantom Menace and Superman Returns. All style and no substance. Quite campy as in OTT and yes full of non normal looking people, ie. Pretty boys and girls in it for eye candy and no acting ability for most of them. They could have easily cast Westlife and the Sugababes and come up with the same result.

A lot of die hard Trek Fans so wanted this to be great and I think for the better part they are in denial of this turd which they deep down so much want to be polished and you know you can't do that. CBT required for some!

Leonard Nimoy I bet you quietly cringed when he watched the film. He's been creative and a backbone as Spock in the original films, acting, directing, producing and writing that he surely took the part for some long awaited Star Trek work and hoping it was going to be better.

I much prefer my Blu Rays of Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country. They are real Star Trek films with good plots, acting and realism and not superfluous nonsense.

William Shatner I bet is so glad he wasn't asked to appear in it as he took enough flack for Star Trek V and now he can sit back and know he can't take any blame.

Ps. I think Star Trek V would've been so much better if the budget allowed Shatner more creative control and on the other side of the spectrum Star Trek The Motion Picture had too much spent on making it look good and less attention to the story; it was far too dull for a Sci Fi film and lasted too long at that

Nothing like a Sunday morning with a cup of tea and a laptop

It's really cool they put all those extras on the BR ... I've never been a great fan of Star Trek up till now but the last movie was really good ... hope the entire "reboot series" will follow those lines - I might turn into a Trekkie after all, ha ha

Star Trek as a 'film' was a big disappointment for me. I was a big Star Trek nut in my teens, but havent bothered since, but figured I'd check out the new film seeing as we just bought a new BR Player.

The PQ/AQ... No complaints there, looked great, special effects top notch etc. The technical side of things was executed pretty flawlessly.

But the film itself? Very average. To their credit, they didn't go OTT with technobabble, and they even managed to make some of the technology more 'plausible' to some extent. The plot had its plus points, but for me at least, things didn't gel together and flow as well as I might have expected. Kinda disappointed that the majority of the main special effects bits were all in the trailers, so there wasnt too much on that side that was new.

But I think they did a great job with the Bones and Spock casting. Deep down those were the two for me actually felt believable as younger versions of Bones/Spock.

Not a bad film by any means, just very..average IMO. Certainly not a patch on First Contact for what i'd call a "Star Trek" film. But having said that, there's potential, and obviously they had to introduce alot of characters for a new audience, hopefully the next film(s) will be able to spend more time on the story.

William Shatner I bet is so glad he wasn't asked to appear in it as he took enough flack for Star Trek V and now he can sit back and know he can't take any blame.

Ps. I think Star Trek V would've been so much better if the budget allowed Shatner more creative control and on the other side of the spectrum Star Trek The Motion Picture had too much spent on making it look good and less attention to the story; it was far too dull for a Sci Fi film and lasted too long at that
I agree. I felt it was a terrific movie but just didn't feel ike TREK. Spock making out with Uhura on the transporter pod??? I don't care how much younger he is...it's just not Spock. So much for "Pom Farr."

Shatner is practically begging J.J. Abrams to find a place for him in the next flick. We'll see...too bad he looks less like Kirk and more like W.C. Fields these days.

I'm one of the few that doesn't hate ST:TMP. Yes, the relationships suffered but I think they were going for more of a 2001 feel and I appreciated it on that level. And the ENTERPRISE never looked so good!

Agreed.

But I'm looking forward to seeing a sequal.

Perhaps then they can invest more in the story and character development.

Good film, just not Star Trek IMO.

Would Terminator be Terminator without Arnie?

Hate to say it but Shatner, Nimoy & Co. aren't coming back

Well, first of all, Nimoy did come back and Shatner conceivably might also. But you missed the point...it isn't whether those guys are in it or not, it is about how the characters were handled. I thought the casting was good but that some were just "out-of-character."...not to mention some unbelievable stunts that would have made Jason Bourne raise an eyebrow.
