Up Blu-ray Review

Reviewed by Alan Paterson, 20th November 2009
Disney/Pixar triumph on all fronts with ‘Up’ - a deeply touching, amusing and exciting movie that takes animation to a whole new human level with the story of grumpy old man Carl as he takes his house on a balloon ride to the South American jungle with Wilderness Scout Russell in tow. A talking dog, a flightless bird and a villainous adventurer make this one for all ages.
The Region A locked, 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 encode looks stunning framed at 1.78:1 with vibrant colour, excellent contrast and beautiful animation.
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track features absorbing ambience, clear dialogue, first class surround steering and impressive representation of Michael Giacchino’s memorable score.
A host of fascinating documentaries together with a CineExplore track from Co-Directors Pete Docter and Bob Peterson round of the package which also includes a DVD and Digital Copy of the movie.

Ditto, thoroughly enjoyed this at the cinema and looking forward to picking up the B blu. I'm surprised with it being one of the best animated soundtracks you've heard and having a fantastic digital direct image, it doesn't get a 10?

Hmm yeah, by the sounds of it the video quality is utterly flawless yet only gets a 9.

I know some of the reviewers are reluctant to give out 10's because 10 signifies that something is utterly and completely without reproach, but sometimes a transfer is just that damn good.

I'm also bemused by the 9 for PQ. What would or could be improved to get a 10?

Best sound to date 10/10
Great Picture 10/10
Good Story 8/10

Story Line was not quite on the level of Spirited Away.

Purchased this yesterday and sat down and watched it with the wife last night. One of the best films I have seen for ages....
Picture quality is absolutely fantastic. THIS is the one to show your friends what Blu ray can do.
And the DTS sound track could not have been better. The thunderstorm had the speakers working overtime, with the sub doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
I'm sure the wife had a tear in her eye every now and then following the storyline, I'm made of sterner stuff than that...
The kids are away at their grandparents at the moment, but for once I can't wait for them to come home....any excuse to watch this again!
If you want to buy a Blu ray disc to show off your systems capabilities, make it this one.
Highly (highly) recommended.
Rob

A definite 10 out of 10 all along the line for me. Pixar's best yet (and that's saying something).
The story was amazing, the picture and sound PERFECT!!
And yes, I must admit that I am not made of 'sterner stuff' and cried twice during this fantastic film.

Love it, absolutely awesome film and it is what Bluray was made for. Beautiful picture, great soundtrack, and the first 15 minutes or so are probably some of the most genuinely emotive I have seen for a long time. I can't decide if this is truly Pixar's best, but the fact I can't think of another to top it suggests maybe it is!

I got the BD/DVD/digital copy pack, and the digital copy also looks great on the iPod
