Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

Reviewed by Cas Harlow, 2nd November 2009
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is too long to work as a switch-your-brain-off piece of dumb fun. Although it improves upon the robot fighting, it also pads out the ridiculous human antics, adding to the already plentiful entourage of either irritating or pointless characters, and drilling a stupid amount of holes in an already Swiss cheese plot. Fallen is too long and too stupid to endure in its entirety, and many who sat through it in the cinema (and survived) would probably testify to this. Still, this kind of a mess of a movie makes for a great home cinema release – looks amazing, sounds awesome, has a plentiful wealth of (also overlong/comprehensive) extras, and is simply perfect to show off your equipment with and (if you have your hand on the chapter skip button) even pretty entertaining since you can avoid the hour-and-a-half of padding in the comfort of your own home. Oh, and Optimus Prime still rocks.

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

Good review, however doesn't it have a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack and not Dolby TrueHD?

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

Indeed it does, all correct on the specs page but somehow the words Dolby True managed to slip past the proofing stage

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

Am i c orrect in thinking there is an IMax version of this film available in the US?

Really looking forward to its release overhere but dont want to order now in case the IMAX version is subsequently released later. The IMAX scenes in batman were stunning so this really could be the dogs whats its IF only it comes to the Uk (assuming i am right in thinking there is an Imax version in the first place?)

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

You are right there is an IMAX version of the film - you can find info on it in the BluRay Films section of the forums - Not sure if its coming to the UK, at the moment its supposed to be exclusive to Walmat in America (although some websites have had stock and shipped to the UK) Also, Walmart owns ASDA so who knows, we may get it here???

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

The IMAX cut includes 9 minutes of IMAX footage over the entire runtime (basically split into the majority on the forest scene where Prime faces off against three Decepticons and then the rest on Devestator towards the end).

There's only about 40 seconds of extra footage not included in the theatrical cut.

I'm not sure whether this really makes this any more attractive a movie, nor whether 9 minutes is worth holding out for if you are indeed going to pick this up, but technically the IMAX version would be the definitive version.

Good review and I think the Verdict sums up the film perfectly. From a technical point of view it's good to see that the action scenes live up to my HD audio and video expectations.

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Review

I watched this earlier in the week.

And, to what I must admit somewhat to my own surprise based on various reviews.

Really enjoyed it

Quite frankly, this movie/BD is what home cinema is all about, a major assult on eyes and ears.

Pretty pointless trying to pick holes in the plot - just let yourself go and enjoy it, personally I found a good bit of the "padding" very amusing.

Great review.

I'm a bit kinder to the sub plots, as some of them were quite enjoyable.

Although I agree about the robot testicles, that was really poor, and just not very funny.

I didn't like what they did with Jetfire to be perfectly honest, I was really looking forward to him in this movie as he was always one of my fave characters, alas, they made him a geriatric farting rusting robot instead of the cool character he was in the comics.

And Turturro's underwear, please, never again!

Apart from those elements, I really enjoyed the movie. Plot was awful, and the 'Transformers Heaven' was also a bit silly, but now the matrix of leadership has appeared................could we now see a proper story for the third movie? Unicron perhaps? Ooooh, I just went all tingly.

If there is a third one, Optimus will die and Rodimus will most likely make an appearance. But you know, I honestly think I could write a fabulous screenplay for number 3, one with a story being the old school Transformers geek that I am. They should bring Simon Furman in to at least advise on the next movie.

Anyway, the effects and the picture on this disc are fabulous, the sound top notch, and Megan *hubba* Fox.........everything a grown man needs

I got my HMV Bumblebee exclusive yesterday.

I watched most of the film yesterday but turned it off towards the end.

I found the film boring and overly long. The effects were good but everything else was dull and where was the story line?

I can't believe this film made so much money at the boxoffice.

All the above is IMO of course.

watched it last night on BluRay at home and quite impressed with the iPod/Phone copy that comes in the box too - not as impressed with the video quality (PS3 & Samsung 42" Plasma) but the audio was excellent. I did find some bits of the film were cut a bit sharp though, almost premature has anyone else found this on the UK copy?

Don't worry. This is a great movie. At least as good plotwise as Megashark Vs Giant Octopus and who can't love a heady mix of giant fighting robot cars and Megan Fox.

I dont understand why people complain so much about storylines.

They took what was basically an animated advertisment for toys and turned it into 2 mega blockbuster movies!

Giant alien robots, Guns, Explosions, car chases, massive fight sequences and a very hot girl!

Whats not to love?

I cant wait for the 3rd Movie, its a shame they dont make them in 3D!

Not sure what cracker trash is but the Transformer movies are very popular, they have made alot of money, which in turn helps to keep people in work and movie theaters open.

Oh and im sure there will be a Game and lots of toys too!

I was really looking forward to this sequel and then couldn't believe how much I was clock watching in the cinema. How can you make a sequel to an entertaining first film, with giant transforming robots fighting each other and amazing special effects and make it boring and annoying in places and feel too long? I need to give this a second viewing, on Blu-ray, to see if my opinion changes.

this is a great film if you leave your brain in another room.

its not ment to be taken seriously thats why its full of talking robots from space.

it is what it is, just eye and ear candy with a bit of humor thrown in.

if you have a good surround system this is enough to keep you going till the end.

i thought id have to have my house re-plasterd after the battle at the end, theres some serious bottom end effects.

I didn't ever want to watch the first one but someone presuaded me to give it a go and I quite enjoyed it.

So when this one came out I thought I won't make that mistake again!

I've now written to the film studio to ask for 2 hours of my life back

Sight and sound is spectacular, who says you can't polish a turd? Clearly it is now possible.

watched this the other day - as a Bluray rental

I thought PQ was superb - as was SQ

but the centre channel seemed very weak at times - was hard to hear- being swamped by the surrounds and bass !

I re-checked the levels of all my speakers, and all OK from that perspective
