Waterworld Blu-ray Review

Reviewed by Cas Harlow, 27th October 2009
Waterworld is a lot more fun than people would like to admit, but it is clearly also a prime example of monumental over-spending. Even though it probably cost ten times as much, it is far inferior to its predecessor, Mad Max 2, which is clearly the basis for almost everything that happens in this nautical variation. I suspect Costner’s ego itself must have added to the disaster of it all, and it is a shame that his is the only version of the film that we get on this Blu-ray release, despite the fact that the extended cut could have easily been seamlessly integrated onto the disc as an alternative option. Aside from this, and the distinct lack of extras (which could have perhaps shone some light on the film’s sordid production history), the disc is actually quite a technically decent offering – the video good and the audio excellent. Fans of Waterworld will be pleased enough to see the film on Blu-ray, newcomers should check it out for its unusual setting – but a rental will probably suffice in that respect – especially when it’s more than likely that, sooner or later, they are going to double-dip and release the extended cut. Probably still trying to make up their losses.

Re: Waterworld Blu-ray Review

Excellent review Still got my copy on HD-DVD to watch, as I've not seen this since it first came out on DVD. Not the best movie in the world, but I still enjoyed it despite the reviews. Does anyone know if it's the same master as the HD-DVD version?

I used to like the Postman, watched it on Sky HD last year and couldn't believe how I managed to see it through to the end. Awful awful movie, with a laughable ending. I quite like Waterworld though

Re: Waterworld Blu-ray Review

What a shame
I also was at least hoping for the alternate TV cut or a hybrid of both version which I suspsect would have made most sense from a continuity point a view.

But all we indeed get is much the same as the HD-DVD version but of course with the five minute lag before the movie ever starts playing.

The did not even manage to get the trailer updated to play in 16:9 - It is still a widescreen trailer in a 4:3 window.

Re: Waterworld Blu-ray Review

Yup, it was a missed opportunity. I heard rumours that it may have had something to do with the source material for the extended cut, but they could have at least included an SD-DVD version as an extra on the disc, or even some of the deleted scenes. I think they had intentions to go a different way to just the theatrical cut as the packaging and original promo for this release dubbed it as the extended cut (the cover art is that of the extended cut) I just don't know why they did not go through with it in the end.

Thanks for your comments, Cas

PS. Don't think I ever managed to finish The Postman either, lol.

you know I was going to post something saying - how long before someone comes along and says, gee you guys just dont get it, the postman is a work of art, it is so deep on so many levels, blah blah blah and on and on ....

Smurfin thats great, punish the reviewer, it seems youve started a new sport

ps.. for what its worth I watched Bladerunner as a kid, with the voice over & it was one of those its on late and so your brains numb type of programs, it was/is ok but its not classic like people make out. Its like watching someone fall down the stairs, a bit like Inspector Clueso, how can something be so painful but at the same time mesmerizing, in a sick sort of way.

PPS... I just thought of a new punishment for my 9yr old when hes naughty, I was going to make him sit and read a book, I joked with him the bible, but now I have the Postman!!!! if you hear a, nooooooooooooooo.... from down South you know hes been naughty haha

Re: Waterworld Blu-ray Review

7/10 for the actual movie?

Did you mean to put a '0' and a '.' before the 7 to read 0.7/10???

I've never understood how someone who created one of the best ever films (Dances with Wolves) could produce such rubbish.

Still, that doesn't detract from an excellent review.

(I just won't be adding it to my collection. )

I actually like this movie. The thing I don't understand is why no release of this movie todate has included any extra's. I mean come on! The thing cost around $175 million, mainly because of the cost of the set's, which in my book are the movie's biggest selling point. And despite it, generally, being regarded as a financial disaster, it did actually make a profit ($264 million, worldwide). Yet no documentaries or commentry tracks. Nada. I just don't understand.
