Anaconda Blu-ray Review

Reviewed by Keith Hurst, 30th September 2009
Overall Anaconda is a throw away movie and a throw away disc. The video and audio are up there, worthy of a watch and listen respectively, but unless you're really having a bad day it's difficult not to do a good presentation of a recent release on Blu-ray. The story and actors though leave a lot to be desired and as such I cannot really recommend this on any level.

It perhaps does have some enjoyment factor on a rental but that is for all the wrong reasons, laughing at the parts you should be shocked at, grimacing at the scenes which are trying to introduce some level of suspense. As for John Voight, well for shame... for shame.

Ah yes, Jon Voight, more ham than a piggery.

The sound has always been good, pity the film sucks.

Bet you're pleased there were no extras.

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

Been knocked off of the release schedule now along with a few others I believe (Ghosts of Mars and maybe Starman).

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

What a pointless review. It seems such a waste to have a film reviewed by someone who dislikes it - a bit like Barry Norman who hated horror movies and so always gave them a bad review.

Personally as a popcorn movie I and my friends like Anaconda but this review is more about the reviewer's prejudices than a useful review of the film. Quotes such as: "I mean call me old fashioned but if my surname was Cube then I don't think I'd be calling my son Ice!" Is this meant to be a humour or just a glimpse of how out of touch with reality the reviewer is with with modern culture?

The only interesting parts relate to Blu ray quality which are so brief as to be barely useful but I think the picture and sound are good.

Also the film is described as "Region 1 UK" - which is meaningless (Region 1 being a DVD classification (and not for the UK) and all Blu Ray regions being letters A, B, C etc.). Hopefully AV Forums will ensure this reviewer learns the basics of the format being being allowed loose on reviewing again.

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

This crops up time and time again, we can't all review the films we enjoy there would be no point whatsoever. Not every film has merits you know and I am sure there are some you would ridicule whereas others would find them enjoyable... does this make your opinion wrong, of course not.

Thanks for pointing out the Region thing though, I have now changed it to Region 0 which is what we at AVForums use to indicate a region free disc.

Hope you enjoy the other reviews I have on the horizon.

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

It would be a pretty dull world if we all had the same opinion and there's room in this big, wide world for more than one.

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

I fully accept that not everyone can like every movie but I would have found it useful to have had some more in depth comments on the picture quality so that forum members who might disagree with the reviewers take on the movie can still make an informed judgement on the Blu Ray itself.

It really isn't that bad a film if you accept it for what it is - a "leave your brain in reception" roller coaster ride and nothing more. It's got giant snakes that leap out of waterfalls to eat people - what more can you want

[To put me in context while I do love pulp horror movies my favourite films also include Fahrenheit 451, Amelie, Apocalypse Now, (just about) anything by Hitchcock, Witness, Gallipoli, The (original) Manchurian Candidate, In The Heat Of The Night...]

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

I know, we all like a bit of pulp including myself... this one though just never did it for me.

Re: Anaconda Blu-ray Review

I thought there was enough in the review of the picture and sound to give me a good idea of the technical quality. It covers most things that people want to know about if they're considering splashing out on a disc.
