Hi8 camcorder to DVD problem

Hi
I'm trying to connect my old canon hi8 cammy to my dvd. I'm using a cable with the three connectors (yellow/white/red). Do I need anything else?
My problem is that nothing is showing on tv screen no matter what I do. The camcorder is linked to the dvd recorder, is that correct? It's years since I did any video editing, most of my equipment is new and different to what I originally used ie old crt telly and vcr. I have three loads of instructions and none of them are helping me. Does anyone out there know the answer?

Welcome to the forum.

You need to ensure that the appropriate socket that you have connected the triple phono to, is selected as the input on the DVDR.

Model numbers of the cam and particularly the DVDR would help.

Hi thanks for your reply
My cam is a canon uc-v10hi. The dvd is a toshiba dr19dtkb2 (yeah its had some crap reviews). I got the video lead to replace the original which has mysteriously vanished. The dvd is linked to the tv by scart cable. I must be missing something out but not sure what unless its my dvdr thats the problem. I've consulted all three manuals but stiill not sure.

You ARE connecting the triple phono lead to the Front of the machine?

If you connect to the back it will not work.

Use the Prog up and down button repeatedly until you select AV3 on the display.

Hi8 camcorder to dvd problem

Hi thanks, you've helped me solve that problem. I might have come round to that solution but probably not for another couple of days and another handful of ripped-out hair. Afraid I have another problem for you now, I can get a picture on screen but it is unstable, fuzzy, buzzy and liable to vanish from time to time. I did say that the main connection is a scart lead plus there is an antenna lead to the telly but do I need anything else to improve the picture quality or is it a matter of checking my settings? What should av3 in my tv setting be set to by the way?. Lot of questions I know but I want to edit some videos for friends so I want them to look good when I've finished.

Gavin means to connect the lead from the camcorder to the AV3 (front sockets) of the DVDR.
The AV1 scart output on your DVDR can then go into AV1 or AV2 of your Tv.
If you're getting a fuzzy picture which cycles on and off during playback of all tapes that suggests a worn or dirty video head in your camcorder.
Try a video head cleaner suitable for your camcorder.

Hi Jaycee.
Thanks for your suggestion re video head cleaner but, thinking about it, I'm not sure how clear I made the problem. The picture I get on the cams lcd screen is fine but when it gets to the tv it is breaking up. Surely if the heads were dirty then the cams display would be affected as well. I'm sure it is a signalling problem between either the cam and the dvd or the dvd and tv, which incidently I don't have without the cam connected. Do UK tv's used interlacing in their scanning systems or is that just a feature of NTSC? I read an article which seemed to describe the problem with the tv display during playback but didn't know whether it was relevant to my system or not. No point in getting a head cleaner if that isn't what the problem is.

Hi Jaycee
I did connect the leads in sockets on front of dvdr. I did get the tv to display camcorder screen but then hit next problem. Thanks for your suggestion but I would have thought that dirty or clogged heads would have caused a problem with the playback on the cam's own lcd screen during playback and not just on the tv. I had put problem down to a signalling fault, either between cam and dvd or dvd and tv. There is no problem just playing back material on tv recorded on dvd. It seems like adding an analogue device to work with two digital ones isn't that easy.

Correct, in that case it looks these symptoms could be due to anti-piracy circuitry in the DVDR to prevent copying.

Hi and thanks for all help offered with my connection issues. As it happens the problem was down to a connection problem as my new RCA cable was duff. I took it back and got it replaced. The replacement works just great and my tv display is fine now

Unusual, but glad to hear it's working okay now.
