Re: sony dvd recorder

Welcome to the forum.

What disc format are they ... and more importantly, have you finalised them?

Re: Discs produced on Sony DVDR will not play on Panasonic?

Gavtech.Sorry im a bit of a "non techy"
Have been recording with maxwell dvd + r discs.

am a bit dissapointed as bought the Sony rdr hxd 890 on account of being the best reccomended in a hi fi magazine.

The player they wont play on is a pioneer dv 565a ,that is not that old and was fairly expensive.

regards skid

Re: Discs produced on Sony DVDR will not play on PIoneer DVD Player?

The Pioneer player does not support + type discs.

Record on DVD-R and you will be OK.

Minus type discs should be used preferentially in the Sony unit anyway. Support is deeper for them.

Re: Discs produced on Sony DVDR will not play on PIoneer DVD Player?

I wouldnt start blaming the sony just because the disks dont play on something else , I am sure they play ok on the sony that they were made on , and will probably play on another sony , especially ones that play almost any disk

the disks will be maxell , not maxwell

one of the things you should check is if you have used VR MODE or VIDEO MODE for these disks when making them on the sony

ie:- you have 2 choices of making a disk , and you have chosen one of them or gone with the default that sony set

as for your sony , is actually a pioneer and I dont think there will be anything wrong with it , you may have had the same problems no matter which you had bought , although the best compatibility may have been another panasonic

its easy to blame the machine when it may well be human error , so dont just assume you can record a dvd on one machine and play it on another , as its always been my experience that this has been a difficult thing to achieve , which is why I have always advocated reauthoring on a pc for full compatibility on a -R disk

try video mode on the sony onto a -R dvd disk and try again

ps:- why did the panasonic player suddenly change into a pioneer player ?

Ramjet apolagise for that. Posted at work, thinking my other dvd was a panasonic,on return home looked and saw it was actually Pioneer.

Being a total non techie thought a recorded disc would play on anything "live and learn i spose"
Can anyone give a reasonable explanation, why a VHS tape, recorded on anything, will play on anything.yet the more modern approach dvd disc, will not, seems stange to me.Could it be the manufacturer, forcing you to buy thier gear again.

regards skid

ps apolagy for pioneer/panasonic confusion, but am a pensioner,so brain gets a little confused, and walking into my living room am confronted with,panasonic/sharp/pioneer/sony/yamaha/samsung/technics/and epos.......................oooh me brain hurts

Your first statement is not strictly true.
A VHS tape will not play on a Betamax , a Video 2000, U-matic, Mini DV, D1, Betacam.... etc,etc,

Format development and constant change has been the norm in all these storage technologies since the cylinder.
It is no different for DVD, which some manufacturers would prefer to regard as obsolete now in any case.

Re: Discs produced on Sony DVDR will not play on Pioneer DVD Player?

vhs is one type of vcr tape , but there were others and they were not compatible with each other

so apart from vhs , there was betamax and also the philips2000 , probably a couple of others as well

so in the dvd world there are several types of disk , and several modes of recording onto those disks , so some players and recorders are compatible with some , most , or all of the formats available

so the sony cannot fully use dvd-ram disks for instance , but can use +R and -R disks , and the rewritable versions named RW , and also cdr and cdrw as well

each manufacturer will decide what can or cannot be used and will then issue this list in the instructions , and -R is the most widely used and so is the vhs equivalent of the modern disk

vhs came to dominate the market , so the confusion dies with the death of the other formats , but in the present dvd age the various formats are still around with various methods of use , so its each to their own

as gavtech said , if your player only takes -R disks , then that is what you should be using , and its important to try one in VR MODE and one in VIDEO MODE just to be sure you know which is best , then set the recorder to the compatible mode and use the disks you find that work

more choice I know , but no different than going in tesco and buying a can of beans , size , manufacturer , type , price and many other factors influence which can goes in your trolley , or if they only sold heinz baked beans ( vhs beans ) then that would be your only choice and only purchase no matter who they were for

if you are not happy with multi choice , stick with one brand

Re: Discs produced on Sony DVDR will not play on Pioneer DVD Player?

In contrast, my Pioneer DVD player (at least ten years old) will play everything apart from DVD-RW and DVD-RAM.

DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R will all play okay (though it seems to have more trouble with DVD-R than any of the plus formats) but it doesn't want to know if I put a DVD-RW disc in it.

No hardship though - I hate the DVD-R/-RW format anyway.

Being as you are a none-techi I will just fill in the gaps.....
You can replace them all with the Sony High-Speed dubbing without any loss of quality.
