Sony RDR-HXD 970 recorder work with Freeview high definition TV?

Just a question to all still linked to this thread. I've used my Sony RDR-HXD 970 recorder successfully for 3 years now with a Sony Freeview TV (I therefore have 2 tuners so can watch one channel while recording another). I'm thinking of getting a Freeview High Definition TV (i.e. a TV with a Freeview HD tuner built in).
Does anybody know whether the Sony RDR-HXD 970 recorder works OK with either the Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, LG Freeview HD TVs?
Do the new generation of Freeview HD TVs have standard Definition tuners built into them that will work OK with older Freeview recorders?
I assume you can't record in high def onto the Sony RDR-HXD 970 recorder because it hasn't got a high def tuner in it even with a high def TV? Am I correct in this. Sorry don't know too much about high definition Freeview TVs.
Any help on this would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Any recorder will work with any standard TV.

The tuner that a TV has is totally irrelevant to the recorder. Recorders have their own tuners and act totally independently of any TV...A TV is not even required to record.

New TV's can have SD or HD/SD tuners in them.
These days, if getting new equipment it well advised to get HD capable equipment ...even if it cannot yet be received in your area yet. It should not be long in coming.

You are correct that the '970 being an SD device cannot record HD [ It could record from an HD source but the result would only be in SD quality. ]

Although a TV tuner can be used as a source for recording, in practice it is a very poor way to record and not recommended.
The signal route is always limited to very low quality and it is hugely inconvenient - as the TV has to be ON and stay on the channel you wish to record

Sony RDR-HXD 970 recorder work with Freeview high definition TV?

Hi Gavtech,
Many thanks for the quick and very informative response. I'll definitely go for a Freeview HD TV then. Don't know by any chance if you can recommend a good 32 inch one. I was thinking of going for another Sony but I know there are a lot of good competitors.
Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

Apologies in advance if the following question has already been asked elsewhere on the forum:

I purchased a Sony RDR-HX790 recorder for my mum last year and unfortunately it won't play downloaded files (divx/xvid) on a DVD_RW disc.

Is the firmware upgrade that's available on the Sony web site likely to address this?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers.

Unfortunately Sony has stopped upgrading the xx70 recorder series long time ago.
Last firmware ever was the 1.70.

It should do .. I've got a RDR-HXD870 model and I'm almost certain it does this! (I can't test since It's recording at the moment!)

I know for certain it will play divx/xvid files on a DVD+RW ..

No update will address this because it does not need to.

These units will play DivX out of the box on almost all media... so look to the way you are preparing the discs and that the file parameters meet the specification for DivX files as laid out in the manual.

I have an RDR-HXD770,and find that it is perfect for me.It is excellent for editing, and I wonder,if anything terminal should happen to it,do all hard drive recorders have the editing facility.I heard that Sony had stopped it because of US concerns re piracy.

Where did you hear this?

All DVDR's have editing as far as I am aware ... and it is unthinkable to think that they would not.

It would have to be an extremely strong lobby to make such a move here .. and I expect it would kill the DVDR market.

I read it in another forum, where they said that Sony had stopped the facility in American machines.I didn't check any further as to the truth of this,so it might be an unsubstantiated rumour that has been stated as a fact.Must admit I was a bit concerned when I read it.

Tivo sued them, they held a patent on the intellectual rights to a machine that was capable of storing recordings onto a HDD. It only affected the USA, places like Canada were unaffected.

Angry Cannot Update RDRHXD970 v1.65 to v1.7

Hope someone can help. I have just discovered that the guide+ service has been deactivated on the analogue channel ITV in the UK. I read somewhere that updating the firmware may let me receive guide+ via the digital broadcast.

Anyway, i downloaded sr07S170.mem from sony support and burnt it to CDR using ImgBurn with ISO9660 selected. Following the Sony instructions i put the CDR in the tray and press and hold "rec stop" then press "play". The tray closes, i then see LOAD followed by "DISC-DWLD". So far so good. The the tray then opens and the instruction say to remove the disc (step 9). However, there is hardly anytime to do this, the tray closes itself almost immediately and then the machine powers off. With lightning quick fingers I have managed to remove the disc once or twice but it makes no difference and the machine still switches off.

Can someone tell what i'm doing wrong? I wondered if it might be the CDR is not burnt correctly (possibly wrong options in ImgBurn) but then why would i get the "DISC-DWLD" message?

I also tried "rec-stop" and "eject" with the same result except it reset all settings.

Any help appreciated as i have spent all evening wasting my time and i'm about ready to throw it at the wall!!

I have exactly the same symptoms. I tried upgrading straight from 1.58 (came with this one installed) to 1.7. I burned several CD-Rs with slightly different options (only ISO9660, ISO9660+Joliet, couple of different burning sw) but got none of them to work. For the "fun" of it I then downloaded an iso image of 1.65 and that worked like a charm. Tried again with 1.70 but the symptoms are still the same.

Any ideas?

Edit:
I tried burning 1.69 to a CD-R and upgrading but the result was the same. So I have actually succeeded only with a ready built iso image. Could someone with successful upgrading upload the iso image so I could try with that? Maybe it's my burner or skills using a burner...

same here

I have the HXD870. I updated to 1.65 a couple of years ago and decided to update to the latest version 1.70. Exactly the same problem as above. The disc drawer opens then immediately closes again.
Any ideas? Anyone?

Solved?

My current laptop is Win7 so I went back to my old XP laptop and re-copied v1.65 to disc and tried that. It worked.

Downloaded v1.7 to the XP laptop and copied to CD. It worked!

Is it something to do with Win7?

[Edit] forgot to say that I used the XP file manager to copy/paste the file from C: drive to a CD-RW disk. No fancy software.

Hi, I have a Sony DVD RECORDER RDR-HXD970 and I have been trying to update the Firmware to version 170 from 169. I'm having trouble for some reason getting the recorder to recognise the MEM file on my burnt CD-R disc, I have used Nero 10 and Windows 7 to burn the file to the disc but when I followed the instructions on the Sony website nothing happens except it says can't play disc.

What have I done wrong someone please help.

I usually use imgburn to burn the file to a disk , and make sure its finalised as the instructions say

seems to me you are trying to play the disk due to your error message

follow the instructions carefully where you press 2 buttons together , not just the play button

Windows 7 in-built disc burning does not finalize the disc. I suspect that is the problem. I have managed to do it with a different burning program., now shows 1.7 in info screen. Now I find that after DSO (possibly coincidence as I have not used the RDR for a long time), it will not retain channels at all after switching to standby. Which I believe 1.70 FW is supposed to fix. Does anyone else have any ideas on what is wrong?
